Book Synopsis Principles of Musical Acoustics by : William M. Hartmann
Download or read book Principles of Musical Acoustics written by William M. Hartmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Musical Acoustics focuses on the basic principles in the science and technology of music. Musical examples and specific musical instruments demonstrate the principles. The book begins with a study of vibrations and waves, in that order. These topics constitute the basic physical properties of sound, one of two pillars supporting the science of musical acoustics. The second pillar is the human element, the physiological and psychological aspects of acoustical science. The perceptual topics include loudness, pitch, tone color, and localization of sound. With these two pillars in place, it is possible to go in a variety of directions. The book treats in turn, the topics of room acoustics, audio both analog and digital, broadcasting, and speech. It ends with chapters on the traditional musical instruments, organized by family. The mathematical level of this book assumes that the reader is familiar with elementary algebra. Trigonometric functions, logarithms and powers also appear in the book, but computational techniques are included as these concepts are introduced, and there is further technical help in appendices.

Book Synopsis Acoustics of the Vowel by : Dieter Maurer
Download or read book Acoustics of the Vowel written by Dieter Maurer and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2016 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems as if the fundamentals of how we produce vowels and how they are acoustically represented have been clarified: we phonate and articulate. Using our vocal chords, we produce a vocal sound or noise which is then shaped into a specific vowel sound by the resonances of the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities, that is, the vocal tract. Accordingly, the acoustic description of vowels relates to vowelspecific patterns of relative energy maxima in the sound spectra, known as patterns of formants. The intellectual and empirical reasoning presented in this treatise, however, gives rise to scepticism with respect to this understanding of the sound of the vowel. The reflections and materials presented provide reason to argue that, up to now, a comprehensible theory of the acoustics of the voice and of voiced speech sounds is lacking, and consequently, no satisfying understanding of vowels as an achievement and particular formal accomplishment of the voice exists. Thus, the question of the acoustics of the vowel - and with it the question of the acoustics of the voice itself - proves to be an unresolved fundamental problem.

Download or read book Phonosurgery written by Nobuhiko Isshiki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phonosurgery: theory and practice" is a book that makes an impor tant contribution to the literature in laryngology. Professor Isshiki has been a driving force in the investigation and correction of certain conditions of the voice. His leadership in this field over two decades has proved to be an inspiration to those interested in the diagnosis and correction of the abnormal voice. His unique background and training in both otolaryngology and plastic surgery has provided him with fundamental knowledge and experience in the study of the voice and larynx and has given him an opportunity to utilize innovative surgical techniques in the correction of some of these problems. Professor Isshiki's name is indelibly linked with laryngeal framework surgery, and those who read this book will not be dis appointed. The book provides very adequate information on the phy siology and pathology of the voice. Emphasis is given to diagnostic aspects of abnormalities of the voice which have been made easier with the development of high technology, such as the use of the com puter and improved laryngoscopes, which include brighter lights, higher resolution lenses, and, when combined with stroboscopy and high-speed filming videolaryngoscopy, provide a valuable tool in faci litating communication between the patient, the physician, and the voice therapist.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Vowels and Vowel Disorders by : Karen Pollock
Download or read book Handbook of Vowels and Vowel Disorders written by Karen Pollock and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the general study of speech and phonetics, vowels have stood in second place to consonants. But what vowels are, how they differ from one another, how they vary among speakers, and how they are subject to disorder, are questions that require a closer examination. This Handbook presents a comprehensive, cogent, and up-to-date analysis of the vowel, including its typical development in children's speech, description by perceptual and instrumental methods, cross-linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects, and disorders of its production and use. It approaches the problems of vowel production and perception from the viewpoints of physiology, physics, psychology, linguistics, phonetics, phonology, and speech-language pathology. The chapters are logically complementary, and the major sections of the book are like key dimensions of understanding, each adding a perspective and base of knowledge on vowels. The sum total of the chapters is a synthesis of information on vowels that has no precedent.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Science of Phonetics by : Nigel Hewlett
Download or read book An Introduction to the Science of Phonetics written by Nigel Hewlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed as an introduction to the scientific study of speech. No prior knowledge of phonetics is assumed. As far as mathematical knowlege is concerned, all that is assumed is a knowledge of simple arithmetic and as far as possible concepts are dealt with on an intuitive rather than mathematical level. The anatomical material is all fully explained and illustrated. The book is arranged in four parts. Part 1, Basic Principles, provides an introduction to established phonetic theory and to the principles of phonetic analysis and description, including phonetic transcription. Part 2, Acoustic Phonetics, considers the physical nature of speech sounds as they pass through the air between speaker and hearer. It includes sections on temporal measurement, fundamental frequency, spectra and spectrograms. Part 3, Auditory Phonetics, covers the anatomy of the ear and the perception of loudness, pitch and quality. The final part, Part 4, covers the articulatory production of speech, and shows how experimental techniques and tools can enhance our understanding of the complexities of speech production. Though the audience for this book is mainly students and professors in the Speech Sciences, it will also be valuable to any students studying hearing science and acoustics. The book is well supported with figures, tables, and practice boxes with experiments.
