It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Karl Marx and Modern Socialism This book is not in any way an anti-collectivist pamphlet; nor does it claim to be either an original or a profound study of Marxism. But the life of Marx is so little known, either by friend or foe, and his teaching so often reduced to a few bald shibboleths, that there may perhaps be room for a sketch of him as he was in relation to the thought and the circumstances of his age, describing at the same time, in rough outline, the development of the labour movements of Europe to whose growth he contributed so much. The writer is one of those who are so genially described in certain quarters as "class-biassed teachers in Universities," but he can plead practical knowledge of W.E.A. Tutorial Classes as, in some sense at least, a corrective to academic prejudice, and he is anyhow old-fashioned enough to doubt whether the writing of history must of necessity be only a class, or mass, interpretation of the past. Marx has certainly had less than justice done him hitherto because class interpretations have made him out as either an impeccable hero or a worthless ruffian: this deluge of praise and blame, in each case so often entirely undiscriminating, has had the effect of turning into an inhuman and almost legendary figure one who was in point of fact a very lovable, very exasperating but essentially real, though often wrong-headed, enthusiast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of Capitalism: And the Mission of Socialism The economic structure of our modern society is clearly drifting towards the socialization of industry, and Social ism is preparing the people for this revolutionary change. The time is near when the tools of. Production and raw material will be turned over to the people engaged in pro duction, when production will be carried on, not for profit, but for consumption, when socialized production will be car ried on by society in the interest of society; in short, when society at large will be the master of its own economic destiny: Such a revolution in economic life demands a radical revision and readjustment of our moral conceptions; it demands a clear vision of the drift of our time and a great deal of en thusiasm in the cause of human welfare. This clearness of vision, this enthusiasm and the gospel of a new system of ethics Socialism brings to the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism for Students This little work consists of a series of articles reprinted from the columns of "The International Socialist Review," and written in answer to the request of its editor for a study course in Socialism. The aim of the author is to indicate in briefest outline some of the more salient points in the Socialist philosophy, so as to give the reader an inkling into the nature of the modern Socialist movement. At best this treatise can serve only as a framework. The much more important task of rearing the structure remains for the student. It is hoped that the course of reading, suggested in the appendix, will be found of service in this respect. So far as possible the author has followed the beaten path of Socialist thought and purposely tried to avoid phases of the question over which there is serious dispute. Where anything new is offered, of course he alone is responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge of Socialism I am not here maintaining that the socialists are the true prophets or that socialism is the inevitable form of society. I am simply maintaining that it behooves us to study very carefully a movement which has grown faster in the last generation than any other movement in the history of the world, with the exception of the Moham medan religion in the years immediately following the death of the prophet. The socialist vote increased in the United States from in the presidential election of 1900 to in that of 1904. In France it increased from in 1887 to in 1906; in Germany from in 1887 to (far the largest party vote in the Empire) in 1903; and in the countries of western E'urope and the United States from in 1870 to in 1905. As yet we do scarcely more than rub our eyes and stare at these figures. But they in vite us to read and ponder. In the brief hour at my disposal I have planned to deal with three aspects o-f socialism: the first historical, to give a summary View of the course of socialistic thought in the last half century; the second expository, to set forth some of the tenets agreed on by the socialists quite gen erally; and the third critical, to indicate what should be the attitude toward the socialist claims and principles of those who, like us, are pledged to the doctrine of the su preme value of the ethical life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism, Utopian and Scientific The present little. Book is, originally, a part of a larger whole.'about 1875, Dr. E. Diihring, privat docent at Berlin University, suddenly and rather clamorously announced his conversion to Socialism, and presented the German public not only with an elaborate Socialist theory, but also with a complete practical plan for the reorganization of society. As a matter of course, he fell foul of his predecessors; above all, he honored Marx by pouring out upon him the full vials of his wrath. This took place about the time when the two sec tions of the Socialist party in Germany - Eisenach ers and Lassallians - had just efi'ected their fusion, and thus obtained not only an immense increase of strength, but, what was more, the faculty of em ploying the whole of this strength against the com mon enemy. The Socialist party in Germany was fast becoming a power. But to make it a power, the first condition was that the newly-conquered unity 'should not be imperiled. And Dr. Diihring openly proceeded to form around himself a sect, the nucleus of a future separate party. It thus became necessary to take up the gauntlet thrown down to us, and to fight out the struggle whether we liked it or not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks.
