Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Catechism Secondly, a Catechism should contain the doc trines held by the Church, not partially or loosely joined together, but arranged in a clear and con cise manner, embracing, as an organic whole, all that is essential to the Christian faith. The various doctrines Of the Bible have a most intimate and inseparable connection, one with another, and this inter-dependence ought to be made plain to the catechumen by deducing each chapter from the One preceding, and applying the same principle to the consecutive questions. What doctrines may be omitted in a Catechism is a matter in no wise optional. A proper Catechism will convey the nu mistakable impression Of being complete, of con taining all that is essential to the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Of the three documents that comprise the Westminster Standards, the Larger Catechism has been the most neglected, even by conservative Presbyterians who profess to embrace these Standards. J. G. Vos wrote a series of studies of the Larger Catechism that first appeared in Blue Banner Faith and Life (1946-49) and has never circulated widely. G. I. Williamson has edited Vos's commentary, and P&R is publishing it in book form for the first time. Because the Larger Catechism supplements the Shorter Catechism on such topics as the church and the means of grace, Presbyterians dare not ignore it. This edition of J. G. Vos's commentary will encourage a recommitment to the Larger Catechism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Shorter Catechism, Vol. 1: Q. 1 to 38; Containing the Summary of Christian Doctrine The Catechism does not pause to prove the truth of the religion which it explains. It begins by stating at once in' the broadest and most scriptural terms, what true religion implies, what it requires, and what it gives. Man's Chief End. The word 'end, ' which means properly the 'extreme point of a thing, ' may denote either the point which is reached or the point which is aimed at. SO it comes to be used for both result and object. It has the latter sense when we speak of a man's private ends. It has the same sense occasionally 1n the Bible, as when Paul says that the end Of the commandment is charit (1 Tim. I. SO here it signifies the object or which man exists, the purpose Of his life, the aim set before him. The Catechism speaks, however, of man's 'chief end, ' to indicate that there are various objects which he has to fulfil, the service of his fellow-men, the performance Of ordinary duty, and the like; while 'yet there is one which is superior to all, and to which all others look. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines, History, and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church This little volume claims no originality of thought. It is an humble attempt to collect and arrange a brief and simple Outline Of the principal doctrines of the Methodist Protestant Church, as the author learned them from the fathers and the doctrinal standards recognized by the denomination; together with some Of the leading facts connected with the history Of Methodism and Of the Methodist Protestant Church; and a full and complete view of the polity or system of government adopted by the Church. When a person gets a clear outline of any subject, it greatly assists him in Obtaining a fuller and more comprehensive view of it in detail. Such an out line, except as it relates to the polity Of the Church, is all that is contemplated here. It is presumed that even this brief view will be valuable to members Of the Church who may not care to extend their investigations further, and that it will be useful in giving those who have no knowledge of our Church, a pretty correct idea of its doctrinal views, its origin and present condition, and its republican system of church government. The author can not but think that it will also be useful to young men entering the ministry in our Church, and convenient for even Older ones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition in the Form of Question and Answer of the Westminster Assembly's Shorter Catechism One of the best commentaries on the Catechism is that entitled A concise system of theology on the basis of the Shorter Catechism, by Alexander Smith Paterson. The author died in the year 1828, being in the 25th year of his age. He was a student of theology under the care of the Church of Scotland, and in order to prepare for ex amination before the Presbytery he drew up this admira ble survey of the Shorter Catechism. Thus it appears that he who applies himself to the study of the Shorter Catechism may obtain at little ex pense very satisfactory aid in that pursuit. Tributary to the same end will be found various expositions of the Westminster Confession of Faith and of the Larger Cate chism which have appeared. One of the best works in Systematic Theology is a treatise by Thomas Ridgley, D.D. (1667 which is simply an exposition Of the Larger Catechism, and, therefore, virtually of the Shorter Catechism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abridged Catechism of Christian Doctrine Gentlemen: - I take much pleasure in being able to approve and recommend your German-English edition of Deharbe's Catechism, It will be difficult to find a Catechism superior to Deharbe's, It has gone through many editions. Unfortunately in some editions changes were made which instead of improving rather impaired the authors work. The edition which you have chosen for circulation is one which has not been subject to these alterations. The doctrine is clearly stated and questions follow questions in logical order. In addition to the small Catechism in use in some of our schools i it is not only advisable but necessary to introduce at least in the higher grades a larger one. We are living in times when our children must be well grounded in the principles of their faith and the teachings of the Church, For obtaining this fuller instruction I recommend in a special manner your edition of Deharbe's. Pastors who find it necessary to require the children to study the Catechism in the German and English languages, will find this work of yours very serviceable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Larger Catechism stands as one of the three major doctrinal standards produced by the Westminster Assembly. Often overshadowed by the Shorter Catechism and the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism exhibits the Assembly's most mature theological reflection and insight. In this remarkable volume, John Bower provides extensive historical background for the making of this colossal catechism. He traces the history of the Assembly's efforts from the initial call for a catechism, through deliberations on its form and content, and down to the intricate process of monitoring its printing. The centerpiece of the volume is Bower's critical text of the catechism. Painstakingly checked and indexed, the critical text is supported by a four-column comparison of the authoritative manuscripts and printings. Graced with a glossary and a catalog of corrected proof-texts, Bower's text is sure to be the benchmark for future study, modern editions, and foreign translations for years to come. This is the initial volume of the Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series. Table of Contents: Introduction: The Making of the Catechism 1. One Catechism for Three Kingdoms 2. Exact and Comprehensive: A New Catechism 3. Completing the Work 4. Manuscripts and Editions 5. Critical Editing Methods and Conventions A Critical Edition of the Larger Catechism Authoritative Texts: A Parallel Column Comparison Series Description Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series presents the six chief works authored by the Westminster Assembly for establishing covenanted uniformity of religion in England: the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, the Shorter Catechism, the Directory for Public Worship, the Directory for Church Government, and the Psalter. Each volume will contain a historical introduction, the critical text, and parallel columns comparing original manuscripts and authoritative editions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catechism Tested by the Bible, Vol. 3: A Question Book on the Topics in the Assembly's Shorter Catechism; For Families, Sabbath Schools, Bible Classes, and Churches; Series for Youth and Adults, Part I and II; Part I, Doctrinal They formed a Directory for public worship and for the other official duties of clergymen, and a Confession of Faith with Biblical proofs. They also appointed two committees, one to express the substance of the Confession in the form of a Shorter Catechism for the instruction of the young, which was adopted Nov. 5, 1647; and the other to produce from that Confession a Larger Catechism, designed to aid public religious teachers, and adopted April 14, 1648. The Shorter Catechism, which was soon reprinted in America, in the New England Primer, consists of two parts. Of these, the first, from the beginning to the thirty-eighth question and answer, treats of what we are to believe concerning God, and is doctrinal; the second part, from the thirty-ninth question to the end, treats of our duties, and is practical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Treasury of the Catechism Through the kind permission of the Bishop of Peoria, the text of the Catechism is introduced without abridgment. The ques tions and answers of the Catechism appear in bold-face type as headings. The passages of Sacred Scripture that confirm the doctrine of the Catechism, or in some way bear upon the ques tion, are placed underneath and are printed in a pleasing old style type. For the references Arabic figures of modern style, made prominent enough to arrest the attention, have been selected. The references are printed in the guise of fractions, and, if read as such, will be easily memorized. The Bible text used in this compilation is that of Potter's Approved Standard Douay Edition.
