Book excerpt: This monograph considers the motion of incompressible fluids described by the Navier-Stokes equations with large inflow and outflow, and proves the existence of global regular solutions without any restrictions on the magnitude of the initial velocity, the external force, or the flux. To accomplish this, some assumptions are necessary: The flux is close to homogeneous, and the initial velocity and the external force do not change too much along the axis of the cylinder. This is achieved by utilizing a sophisticated method of deriving energy type estimates for weak solutions and global estimates for regular solutions—an approach that is wholly unique within the existing literature on the Navier-Stokes equations. To demonstrate these results, three main steps are followed: first, the existence of weak solutions is shown; next, the conditions guaranteeing the regularity of weak solutions are presented; and, lastly, global regular solutions are proven. This volume is ideal for mathematicians whose work involves the Navier-Stokes equations, and, more broadly, researchers studying fluid mechanics.

Book excerpt: Undoubtedly, the Navier-Stokes equations are of basic importance within the context of modern theory of partial differential equations. Although the range of their applicability to concrete problems has now been clearly recognised to be limited, as my dear friend and bright colleague K.R. Ra jagopal has showed me by several examples during the past six years, the mathematical questions that remain open are of such a fascinating and challenging nature that analysts and applied mathematicians cannot help being attracted by them and trying to contribute to their resolution. Thus, it is not a coincidence that over the past ten years more than seventy sig nificant research papers have appeared concerning the well-posedness of boundary and initial-boundary value problems. In this monograph I shall perform a systematic and up-to-date investiga tion of the fundamental properties of the Navier-Stokes equations, including existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions and, whenever the region of flow is unbounded, of their spatial asymptotic behavior. I shall omit other relevant topics like boundary layer theory, stability, bifurcation, de tailed analysis of the behavior for large times, and free-boundary problems, which are to be considered "advanced" ones. In this sense the present work should be regarded as "introductory" to the matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a successful solution to one of the central problems of mathematical fluid mechanics: the Leray’s problem on existence of a solution to the boundary value problem for the stationary Navier—Stokes system in bounded domains under sole condition of zero total flux. This marks the culmination of the authors' work over the past few years on this under-explored topic within the study of the Navier—Stokes equations. This book will be the first major work on the Navier—Stokes equations to explore Leray’s problem in detail. The results are presented with detailed proofs, as are the history of the problem and the previous approaches to finding a solution to it. In addition, for the reader’s convenience and for the self-sufficiency of the text, the foundations of the mathematical theory for incompressible fluid flows described by the steady state Stokes and Navier—Stokes systems are presented. For researchers in this active area, this book will be a valuable resource.

Book excerpt: "The volumes deal with the fundamental mathematical properties of the Navier-Stokes equations, such as existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions, and, for unbounded domains, their asymptotic behavior. The work is an up-to-date and detailed investigation of these problems for motions in domains of different types: bounded, exterior and domain with noncompact boundaries. Throughout the work, main problems which, so far, remain open are pointed out and for some of these conjectures are offered. New results are presented throughout, while several classical subjects are treated in a completely original way."--Google Book Search.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this monograph is to develop an elementary and se- containedapproachtothemathematicaltheoryofaviscousincompressible?uid n in a domain ? of the Euclidean spaceR , described by the equations of Navier- Stokes. The book is mainly directed to students familiar with basic functional analytic tools in Hilbert and Banach spaces. However, for readers’ convenience, in the ?rst two chapters we collect, without proof some fundamental properties of Sobolev spaces, distributions, operators, etc. Another important objective is to formulate the theory for a completely general domain ?. In particular, the theory applies to arbitrary unbounded, non-smooth domains. For this reason, in the nonlinear case, we have to restrict ourselves to space dimensions n=2,3 that are also most signi?cant from the physical point of view. For mathematical generality, we will develop the l- earized theory for all n? 2. Although the functional-analytic approach developed here is, in principle, known to specialists, its systematic treatment is not available, and even the diverseaspectsavailablearespreadoutintheliterature. However, theliterature is very wide, and I did not even try to include a full list of related papers, also because this could be confusing for the student. In this regard, I would like to apologize for not quoting all the works that, directly or indirectly, have inspired this monograph.

This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive, detailed and self-contained treatment of the fundamental mathematical properties of boundary-value problems related to the Navier-Stokes equations. These properties include existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions in bounded as well as unbounded domains. Whenever the domain is unbounded, the asymptotic behavior of solutions is also investigated. This book is the new edition of the original two volume book, under the same title, published in 1994. In this new edition, the two volumes have merged into one and two more chapters on steady generalized oseen flow in exterior domains and steady Navier–Stokes flow in three-dimensional exterior domains have been added. Most of the proofs given in the previous edition were also updated. An introductory first chapter describes all relevant questions treated in the book and lists and motivates a number of significant and still open questions. It is written in an expository style so as to be accessible also to non-specialists.Each chapter is preceded by a substantial, preliminary discussion of the problems treated, along with their motivation and the strategy used to solve them. Also, each chapter ends with a section dedicated to alternative approaches and procedures, as well as historical notes. The book contains more than 400 stimulating exercises, at different levels of difficulty, that will help the junior researcher and the graduate student to gradually become accustomed with the subject. Finally, the book is endowed with a vast bibliography that includes more than 500 items. Each item brings a reference to the section of the book where it is cited. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics in particular mathematical fluid mechanics and differential equations. Review of First Edition, First Volume: “The emphasis of this book is on an introduction to the mathematical theory of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is written in the style of a textbook and is essentially self-contained. The problems are presented clearly and in an accessible manner. Every chapter begins with a good introductory discussion of the problems considered, and ends with interesting notes on different approaches developed in the literature. Further, stimulating exercises are proposed. (Mathematical Reviews, 1995)

Book excerpt: This work examines the feasibility of a novel high-order numerical method, which has been termed Flux Correction. It has been given this name because it \corrects" the flux terms of an established numerical method, cancelling various error terms in the fluxes and making the method higher-order. In this work, this change is made to a traditionally second-order finite volume Galerkin method. To accomplish this, higher-order gradients of solution variables, as well as gradients of the fluxes are introduced to the method. Gradients are computed using lagrange interpolations in a fashion reminiscent of Finite Element techniques. For the Euler Equations, Flux Correction is compared against Flux Reconstruction, a derivative of the high-order Discontinuous Galerkin and Spectral Dierence methods, both of which are currently popular areas of research in high-order numerical methods. Flux Correction is found to compare favorably in terms of accuracy, and exceeds expectations for convergence rates. For the full Navier-Stokes Equations, the effect of curved elements on Flux Correction are examined. Flux Correction is found to react negatively to curved elements due to the gradient procedure's poor handling of high-aspect ratio elements.
