Book excerpt: Preamble Agricultural progress is normally regarded as a prerequisite of economic development. It is true that economic development in the modern times has come to be associated with industrialisation; nevertheless, it is generally accepted that industrialisation can follow only on the sound wheels of agriculture. As a matter of fact, if one goes by the available evidence, with the exception of Great Britain, industrial development in all presently developed countries proceeded on the basis of agricultural self-sufficiency and increase in agricultural productivity, made possible through State intervention in numerous ways such as subsidized farm inputs, free expertise and extension services, price guarantees and the provision of overheads in terms of credit, marketing and numerous social and civil amenities. In a developing economy, agriculture has to be given priority in order to accelerate the rate of economic progress. The agricultural labourers of several developing countries have peculiar characteristics that are common to most of the landless agricultural labourer of developing countries especially those with high population size. The plight of agricultural labourers is becoming increasingly deplorable in most developing countries. However in some countries the state intervened to protect the interest of agricultural labourers by adopting both restrictive and promotional measures while other governments have generally been lukewarm to their problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor has selected, out of a huge body of published and unpublished material, the key essays which show up the major themes that have dominated the historiography on India's rural labor. A variety of perspectives - the economic, the cultural, the demographic, the taxonomic, the political, the colonial, the nationalistic--are either presented or extensively commented on. In keeping with the format of this series, a detailed introduction discusses how and why the study of agricultural laborers came into existence, as well as shifts in perspective and changes in the questions asked. The volume shows how historical information on labor was gathered by British administrators and census operations, the uses to which this was put by nationalist writers, the revisions and additions to this by contemporary economic historians, and the various new perspectives from which we can now view peasants and their world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ethnography of the emerging proletarian social consciousness and resistance as Malay peasants from east coast peninsular Malaysia find themselves reconstituted as a "class" not only as an economic category but also as a "community" in plantation society. The plantation, as a "window" to capitalism, serves as an excellent small-scale empirical ambience and testing-ground to probe how Malays respond to both industrial class-status authority and wage labouring work. The author subsequently analyses how the nuances of Malay proletarian moral economy and dignity are articulated with their notions of class, culture, ethnicity, and humanism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty alleviation is a major objective of development. More than a fifth of the world's population lives in absolute poverty, and the majority of the poor live in rural areas. This volume studies what can be done for alleviating rural poverty. Four chapters address the measurement of poverty and inequality, including the use of household expenditure surveys and intra-household income distribution. Evidence is presented for India, Mauritania, Cte d'Ivoire and China. Other chapters present case studies on strategies for rural development: provision of rural credit in Bangladesh and India; technical change in Philippine agriculture; contract farming in Thailand; and banana growers in the Windwards. The contributions introduce the problems of rural development and show that effective rural development is assisted by investment in education and secure access to credit; that equity is important for incentives but not directly related to poverty; and that technical and institutional reform are essential, but require careful design and implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a ground-breaking intervention on Dalit politics in India. Challenging received ideas, it uses a comparative framework to understand Dalit mobilisations for political power, social equality and justice. The monograph traces the emergence of Dalit consciousness and its different strands in north and south India — from colonial to contemporary times — and interrogates key notions and events. These include: the debate regarding core themes such as the Hindu–Muslim cleavage in the north and caste in the south; the extent to which Dalits and other backward castes (OBC) base their anti-Brahminism on similar ideologies; and why Dalits in Uttar Pradesh (north India) succeeded in gaining power while they did not do so in the region of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh (south India), where Dalit consciousness is more evolved. Drawing on archival material, fieldwork and case studies, this volume puts forward an insightful and incisive analysis. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of Dalit studies and social exclusion, Indian politics and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982. Until the nineteenth-century the history of agriculture was the history of mankind but it has not perhaps received the wide attention that this importance justifies. In this study, the author reviews for the student of agricultural history successive attempts to describe and explain agricultural changes that are not specific to a limited area or a particular time. In a sense The Dynamics of Agricultural Change is a systematic historical geography of agriculture. Some of the models the author explores have been developed within agricultural history; some, drawn from other disciplines, can be applied fruitfully to it. What is the relationship between population growth and agricultural development? Between environmental changes and those in agriculture? What was the effect of the industrial revolution? And has there been an agricultural revolution? This book suggests to university students of economic history, historical geography and agriculture, a number of stimulating ways of interpreting and reinterpreting agricultural history.
