Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Little Care The Land of Little Care Come, little comrade, let us fare across the hills beyond the city, And loiter in the open where no voice may call to us for pity; We'll wade in brooks and wander by the slanting fields and forest edges, And listen to the winds that sigh and sing through aromatic sedges. We'll linger in the hawtree's shade, and carve the letters of our names On mossy fences that were made by hands which toil no longer claims; The golden willow's branch shall be a whistle you may blithely blow And every pool shall be a sea where stately vessels come and go. I'll lead you where the valleys lie deep in the morning's gleaming dew; The Crabtree's fragrant blossoms I will pluck from thorny boughs for you, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, Esopus, Schoharie, and Delaware—the rivers of angling pioneers Thaddeus Norris, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt, Theodore Gordon, and many others—are celebrated in this gorgeous book of photographs and text. In three major sections, Land of Little Rivers presents historical and physical profiles of the rivers; classic rods, reels, and flies; and engaging stories of the people, events, and developments that constitute the Catskill fly-fishing tradition. Complementing its photographic beauty, Land of Little Rivers is a book of substance, filled with fascinating stories, anecdotes, and nuggety captions. Land of Little Rivers is the product of author Francis’s twenty-five years of research and writing about Catskill fly fishing, and of photographer Ferorelli’s more than thirteen thousand images, from which has been selected the most evocative portfolio of photos ever made of these historic rivers. Together they have produced an exquisite, museum-quality work, one that captures magnificently the beauty and passion so central to the sport Izaak Walton called “the gentle art.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distinctions and Anomalies, Arising Out of the Equitable Doctrine of the Legal Estate The endeavour at the same time made to deal with the matter upon principle, and more especially to find an intel ligible basis for the doctrines of the priority of the legal estate and tacking, may also be of some practical utility. The ascertainment of principles is of importance as well to the study of the law, as to its successful amendment1 and judicial development. If the explanation of tacking here advanced be the true one, it will appear that there has been in recent times a tendency of the courts to extend in more than one direction that justly reprobated doctrine, which, however, ao cording to the accepted judicial axiom is to be applied only within the bare limits of the old authorities which established it. But if the theories put forward should prove upon further investigation not to be sustainable, they may perhaps claim the merit appertaining to hypotheses in general, that they are necessary steps to something more certain. Perhaps too the statement as a whole of equitable doctrine concerning the legal estate as it now stands - its intricacy, its fortuitous results, its occasional injustice, its technicality and immaturities - may help to make more clear the urgency of the case for the legislative reform of English property law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? AS years went by, however, the newcomers moved farther and farther into the west, driving the Indians and the wild beasts be fore them, until now the homes Of the white men are found throughout the land. People Of unlike faiths and Speaking different languages cross the ocean in Shiploads, for they feel that when America is reached they will find freedom and happiness. The Indians who are still left in the country are Slowly learning the ways Of the white men. They are taught in schools by white teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Pilgrim: Further Experiences The little Pilgrim, whose story has been told in another place, and who had arrived but lately on the other side, among those who know trouble and sorrow no more, was one whose heart was always full of pity for the suffering. And after the first rapture Of her arrival, and Of the blessed work which had been given to her to do, and all the wonderful things she had learned Of the new life, there returned to her in the midst of her happiness so many questions and longing thoughts that They were touched by them who have the care of the younger brethren, the simple ones Of heaven. These questions did not disturb her peace or joy, for she knew that which is so Often veiled on earth, that all is accomplished by the will Of the Father, and that nothing can hap pen but according to His appointment and under His care. And she was also aware that the end is as the beginning to Him who knows all, and' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The forest has closed over the life that we used to know along the Siletz, and our friends have all packed out. But from the Atlantic to the Pacific the Land Claimers scattered for ever - remember the days when the pack trains made the trail from the Agency to Otter Rock, when the settler's ax echoed down the canyons. Now the forest ranger, from the high ridges, looks down on deserted cabins and shrinking clearings, and knows each place by its old name, but does not know, nor care, where the settler has gone. So I have brought some of us back, once more, in this book, to live over again for a little the life we knew along the Siletz River. When Sam scalped her new doll, and fastened the glossy black curls to a Wigwam improvised with the curtains of the four-post bed in the best bedroom, Dot was sorely tried. As her eyes passed from the crownless doll on the floor to the floss-silk ringlets hanging from the bed furniture, her round rosy face grew rounder and rosier, and tears burst from her eyes. But in a moment more she clenched her little fists, forced back the tears, and gave vent to her favorite saying, I don't care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Folks Land: The Story of a Little Boy in a Big World The story of Joe-Boy spun itself through the inspiration of a merry band of kindergarten children who held the leading string while the teacher followed and guided. It was early in January that the author began the story to them, thinking that in about four weeks' work we would cover, through the principles of co-operation and interdependence, the building and furnishing of a house, thereby impressing on the child mind something of the true worth and dignity of labor as brought into actual contact with his everyday life. When the wee house had been built, however, and completely furnished by eager and busy fingers, the children had become so interested in the Gipsy baby that they were unwilling to give him up. Each morning the teacher was met with such questions as: "Will you tell us more about Joe-Boy to-day?" "Did he ever grow large enough to go to kindergarten?" "How many people helped to get his clothes?" "His food?" "Did Joe-Boy have any pets?" And so each day there was some new question arising, showing that the children felt an incompleteness to leave the story just where we had planned - and justly so, since no life is complete that does not reflect its threefold relationship to Nature, God, and man. They were instinctively reaching out for clearness in the complexities of life's relationships, in regard to themselves, through the Gipsy baby. His life was but the mirror reflecting their own life, and they were longing to solve it. Thus days passed into weeks and weeks into months as we followed the Gipsy baby through the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdom, and traced the laws of co-operation and interdependence, which weave all of life's relationships into one grand sweet song. We little dreamed as we passed from subject to subject that the story would ever present itself in book form, but other kindergartners asked for the basis of the program, primary teachers asked for the use of the Nature stories, and even mothers wished to borrow them for bedtime use, so, through these interested suggestions, the book finally took shape. Of course no kindergartner can follow with equal results another's plan of work, but the subject matter of this program is of such universal and vital interest that it can not fail to offer helpful suggestions. And that is all that any program can justly do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
