Book excerpt: The theory of Singh and lumley for the effect of surface roughness on a laminar boundary layer is applied to flow past a semi-infinite flat plate where the roughness is a randomly distributed small amplitude waviness characteristic of the manufacturing process. Distorted velocity profiles are calculated for a range of parameters and comparisons are made with results obtained by a phenomenological theory. Present results are nearly an order of magnitude smaller than those predicted by the phenomenological theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: In connection with Pohlhausen's solution for the temperature field on the flat plate, a series of formulas were indicated by means of which the velocity and temperature field for variable physical characteristics can be computed by an integral equation and an iteration method based on it. With it, the following cases were solved: On the assumption that the viscosity simply varies with the temperature while the other fluid properties remain constant, the velocity and temperature field on the heated and cooled plate, respectively, was computed at the Prandtl numbers 12.5 and 100 (viscous fluids). A closer study of these two cases resulted in general relations: The calculations for a gas of Pr number 0.7 (air) were conducted on the assumption that all fluid properties vary with the temperature, and the velocities are low enough for the heat of friction to be discounted. The result was a thickening of the boundary layers, but no appreciable modification in shearing stress or heat-transfer coefficient.

Book excerpt: Abstract: An approximate method is presented for the estimation of the properties of the incompressible laminar boundary layer on a flat plate in the slip-flow regime using Kármán's momentum method. These results are compared with results for a normal boundary layer at the same Reynolds number to bring out the characteristics of a slip boundary layer. A simple criterion for the importance of slip is presented.

Book excerpt: The concepts of eddy kinematic viscosity and eddy diffusivity are used to calculate skin friction and heat transfer coefficients for the turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. The eddy kinematic viscosity, eddy diffusivity, and turbulent Prandtl number vary across the boundary layer. The Mach number range is from zero to ten. The surface to stream temperature ratio varies from one-half to eight, and includes the insulated surface. The friction results are compared with experimental data. Velocity and temperature profiles for the entire region from the surface to the outer edge are compared with experimental data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of controlled roughness was studied on a flared ogive cylinder at M = 5.3, with emphasis on three-dimensional perturbations at reattachment, by employing pitot pressure surveys and sublimation techniques. Cylindrical roughness elements of slightly less than the boundary layer thickness were used. Protuberances of this size were found not to contaminate the laminar reattachment compared to a model free of roughness. The results indicated that weak disturbances upstream of separation became amplified in the free shear layer and produced significant spanwise pitot pressure fluctuations at reattachment. Results of a systematic investigation of the effects of roughness height, diameter and spacing are presented.

Book excerpt: The subject of turbulent flow is treated in detail. The available data on flow through pipes and over flat plates are presented. Turbulent wakes and jets are treated by means of the Prandtl mixing length theory. A section is devoted to the Gruschwitz method for calculating turbulent boundary layers in accelerated and retarded flows. The methods of Betz and Jones for determining profile drag from wake surveys are given. A chapter on the theory of the stability of the laminar boundary layer, developed from the point of view of small oscillations, is also included.

The book provides connections between basic training in calculus and fluid mechanics and the application of hydrodynamics in daily ship design practice. Based on a foundation in fluid mechanics, the origin, use, and limitations of experimental and computational procedures for resistance and propulsion estimates are explained. The book is subdivided into sixty chapters, providing background material for individual lectures. The unabridged treatment of equations and the extensive use of figures and examples enable students to study details at their own pace. Key features: • Covers the range from basic fluid mechanics to applied ship hydrodynamics. • Subdivided into 60 succinct chapters. • In-depth coverage of material enables self-study. • Around 250 figures and tables. Fundamentals of Ship Hydrodynamics is essential reading for students and staff of naval architecture, ocean engineering, and applied physics. The book is also useful for practicing naval architects and engineers who wish to brush up on the basics, prepare for a licensing exam, or expand their knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the basic understanding of flow characteristics over a flat smooth plate, the experiment was carried out in the laboratory using wind tunnel. Readings of the boundary layer were taken at 15 locations over the flat plate (glass surface) with a free stream velocity (U) which varies from 13.4to 13.5 giving Reynolds number corresponding to laminar through turbulent flows. The height of the boundary layer ranges from 2mm to 29 mm .then the parameters like displacement thickness and momentum thickness were calculated from the velocity profile. The boundary layer growth over the glass plate was found out with the help of velocity profiles at different locations. The boundary layer growth gives a brief idea of fluid flow over a flat surface.
