Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest title in the highly successful Ancient Textiles series is the first substantial monograph-length historiography of early medieval embroideries and their context within the British Isles. The book brings together and analyses for the first time all 43 embroideries believed to have been made in the British Isles and Ireland in the early medieval period. New research carried out on those embroideries that are accessible today, involving the collection of technical data, stitch analysis, observations of condition and wear-marks and microscopic photography supplements a survey of existing published and archival sources. The research has been used to write, for the first time, the ‘story’ of embroidery, including what we can learn of its producers, their techniques, and the material functions and metaphorical meanings of embroidery within early medieval Anglo-Saxon society. The author presents embroideries as evidence for the evolution of embroidery production in Anglo-Saxon society, from a community-based activity based on the extended family, to organized workshops in urban settings employing standardized skill levels and as evidence of changing material use: from small amounts of fibers produced locally for specific projects to large batches brought in from a distance and stored until needed. She demonstrate that embroideries were not simply used decoratively but to incorporate and enact different meanings within different parts of society: for example, the newly arrived Germanic settlers of the fifth century used embroidery to maintain links with their homelands and to create tribal ties and obligations. As such, the results inform discussion of embroidery contexts, use and deposition, and the significance of this form of material culture within society as well as an evaluation of the status of embroiderers within early medieval society. The results contribute significantly to our understanding of production systems in Anglo-Saxon England and Ireland.

There is something so endearing about little paintings with all the detail and form of a larger piece, not to mention the fact that they are much quicker to stitch! Here she has compiled fresh and appealing designs that depict the pretty, romantic illustrations typical of the Victorian and post-Victorian eras. Each project is accompanied by a detailed thread diagram which shows exactly which colour should be used and where. The small size of the designs allows for great flexibility in their final usea such as group framing, making up into cushions, book covers, quilt squares, needle cases, box lids, tote bags, pockets on clothing and so on.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Embroidery in America A history of the needlework of the world would be a history of the domestic accomplishment of the world, that inner story of the existence of man which bears the relation to him of sunlight to the plant. We can deduce from these needle records much of the physical circumstances of woman's long pilgrimage down the ages, of her mental processes, of her growth in thought. We can judge from the character of her art whether she was at peace with herself and the world, and from its status we become aware of its relative importance to the conditions of her life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ladies Guide to Needle-Work Martha Washington received her lady friends, rising from her knitting or sewing, and resuming the work of her fingers while conversing, and there are specimens of her skill still treasured. Too much cannot be said in favor of this branch of feminine education, and it is a grievous error to allow girls to arrive at maturity ignorant of the full use of the needle. It should be introduced into the daily routine of every school, more especially the plainer and more useful branches, and as early as possible every girl should be required to make and keep in perfect repair the articles in her own wardrobe. Fancy work is a secondary consideration, although this little book will be for the guidance of those, who, having conquered the mysteries of plain sewing, turn for recreation to the daintier and prettier arts of embroidery and fancy knitting. The march of progress extends into this domain as well as all others, and every day some new fancy is displayed in needlework simply for ornamentation. But While the variety of form and use is endless, close examination will generally prove to the expert needlewoman that the most complicated and bewildering com himations reduce themselves to some simple stitch or rule perfectly familiar to them, and the embroidery, crochet, or knitting needle already in possession is the only implement required. The stores for the sale of fancy work, also supply every variety of material carefully prepared for use, simplifying every branch of needlework. To attempt to describe every article in detail would far exceed the compass of this little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Embroidery It is generally recognised to-day, and strongly so in the United States, that technical skill is not in itself sufficient to produce work of distinction, but that a basis of good design is equally essential. While this has never been denied in the case of painting and sculpture, there has until recently been a tacit assumption that one or two minor arts, such as that of embroidery, could get along very well without much conscious design, - were, if anything, the better for it. The art of the embroideress was judged rather by the cunning of her fingers than her eye, and anything supremely difficult of execution could be sure of praise, regardless of its meaning or use. Hence the increasingly debased repetition of traditional patterns by means of transfers patterns, not designs. It is not possible to get full satisfaction from work limited to the reproduction of worn-out ideas. Everyone is an artist to a greater or less degree, and it is the aim of this book to help its readers to discover their own powers. The dozens of examples from all over the world which it contains are the work of artists with the needle, but their artistry is of a kind within the reach of all intelligent people. There are hun dreds of ideas here waiting for you to develop them into designs of your own as attrae tive, as useful and as modern as these.
