Book Synopsis Work Incentives in the Danish Welfare State by : Gunnar Viby Mogensen
Download or read book Work Incentives in the Danish Welfare State written by Gunnar Viby Mogensen and published by Aarhus University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Denmark, as in other Nordic countries, the period since the 1950s has witnessed the development of a modern welfare state with comprehensive public responsibility for the social well-being of the population. But how does this very fine-meshed safety net affect the labour supply - both on the market for legally registered, taxed labour, and on the market for undeclared 'black' labour? Does the welfare state provide too few incentives for the unemployed to seek work, and for those who are employed to work longer hours? And is it the case that the incentive structure encourages do-it-yourself activities? With the support of the Rockwool Foundation, an extensive research project has been carried out, which methodically combines the results of a representative survey with register data. The results, which are presented in this volume, provide a detailed insight into the links between the tax system and the social legislation of the welfare state on the one hand, and the actual behaviour of the Danish labour force on the other.

Book Synopsis Gender and Work by : Patricia A. Roos
Download or read book Gender and Work written by Patricia A. Roos and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cross-cultural study of gender differentiation in employment, this book holds controversial implications for future research in the field. In an analysis of 12 industrial countries, Patricia Roos isolates the effects of gender, family background, education, and marital status, among other variables, on the types of jobs that men and women hold and on their occupational mobility. The consistency of the results suggests historical, cultural, and political traditions of a country have little impact on the kinds of jobs that women and men have. Rather, patterns of occupational sex segregation reflect structural features common to all modern industrial societies. This book is a milestone in the research on sex and marital differences in employment, occupational distribution, and earnings.
Book Synopsis Women in and out of paid work by : Solera, Cristina
Download or read book Women in and out of paid work written by Solera, Cristina and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years women's employment has increased markedly throughout developed countries. Women of younger generations are much more likely than their mothers and grandmothers to enter the labour market and stay in it after they marry and have children. Are these changes due only to changes in women's investments and preferences, or also to the opportunities and constraints within which women form their choices? Have women with higher and lower educational and occupational profiles combined family responsibilities with paid work differently? And have their divisions changed? With an innovative approach, this book compares Italy and Great Britain, investigating transformations in women's transitions in and out of paid work across four subsequent birth cohorts, from the time they leave full-time education up to their 40s. It provides a comprehensive discussion of demographic, economic and sociological theories and contains large amounts of information on changes over time in the two countries, both in women's work histories and in the economic, institutional and cultural context in which they are embedded. By comparing across both space and time, the book makes it possible to see how different institutional and normative configurations shape women's life courses, contributing to help or hinder the work-family reconciliation and to reduce or reinforce inequalities. Women in and out of paid work will be valuable reading for students, academics, professionals, policy makers and anyone interested in women's studies, work-family reconciliation, gender and class inequalities, social policy and sociology.
