Book excerpt: For scholars and practitioners who are interested in or are concerned about knowledge-based issues, this book provides a needed antidote to narrow discussions of foundational issues. The editors of this book maintain that discussions of a knowledge base in educational administration have typically been limited to a fairly traditional range of scholarly commentary reflective of the status quo within departments of educational administration over the past several decades. Other views, such as feminist views, race/ethnic-based orientations, those that dispute the very idea of a knowledge base, and those that simply expand the traditional range, have been given little attention within the knowledge-base discourse. The purpose of this book is, thus, to open up this discourse by broadening the range of viewpoints being considered.

In chapter 1 of this report, "Strategies of Organizing Principal Preparation: A Survey of the Danforth Principal Preparation Program," Gerald C. Ubben and Frances C. Fowler discuss their survey of facilitators of the Danforth Foundation's program. The survey found that environmental constraints and resistance to change inhibited administrative power sharing. In chapter 2, "Preparing Principals to Supervise and Lead Change in Schools," Lance V. Wright presents a program to better prepare first-time principals for supervisory tasks and change. In chapter 3, "Preparing for Action: The Integration of Knowledge for Educational Leadership," Gordon A. Donaldson, Jr. and Russell J. Quaglia describe a novel initiative in the University of Maine's educational administration program to develop a laboratory training experience for school-site leaders. In chapter 4, "Case Records: A Means to Enhance the Knowledge Base in Educational Administration," Karen F. Osterman states that the use of case records in educational administration can increase understanding of administrative practices and help link theory with action. In chapter 5, "Early Childhood Reform and the Knowledge Base of Educational Administration," Colleen A. Capper evaluates seven areas of emphasis in the core curriculum for improving school administrator preparation. (Contains 66 references.) (JPT)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical assessment of the knowledge base on educational effectiveness, covering a period of five decades of research. It formulates a “lean” theory of good schooling, and identifies and explains instances of “ineffectiveness”, such as low effect sizes of malleable conditions, for which expectations are highly strung. The book presents a systemic outlook on educational effectiveness and improvement, as it starts out from an integrated multi-level model that comprises system level, school level and instructional conditions. It offers a classification of school improvement strategies and scenarios for system level educational improvement. Above all, the analysis is very systematic, comprehensive and strongly grounded in theory. The book includes a case study analysis of various strands of improvement-oriented educational policy in the Netherlands as an illustration of some of the arguments used.

Book excerpt: Research supports the theory that evidence-based management practices increase efficiencies in organizations. This study explores the use of evidence-based management among school principals and recognizes the differences with the autonomy and accountability of school system administrators. The review of literature examines the history of management in education, the ongoing debate over a knowledge base for educational administration, positivism and postmodern considerations, and a more utilitarian approach to the epistemological debate in educational leadership. The research study instrument is based upon an adapted World Management Survey, Education Instrument (World Management Survey, n.d.) and uses forced-choice survey and narrative response formats. Basic descriptive statistics were computed and analyzed and indicated a moderate level of application [operations, (M= 3.6), performance, (M= 3.69), target, (M= 3.45), and talent, (M= 3.02)] for each of the management factors measured by the survey. Pearson's zero-order correlational analysis was conducted on items six through 25 from the forced-choice section of the survey and indicated positive significant relationships between and among most items (p
