Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings of Israel and Judah The Books of Kings and Chronicles form the main stjurce for the History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. They require, however, to be supplemented, especially for the later kings, by a careful study of the Prophetical Scriptures, particularly of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Amos, Micah, Habakkuk and Zephaniah. Local colouring, the life and manners of the time, and the feelings of those contemporary with the events described, are derivable almost wholly from this latter source, which furnishes them often in tolerable abundance. The "Antiquities" of Josephus supply less material than might have been expected, and the character of all additional material derived from this quarter requires to be weighed in the scales of a careful and sober criticism. Considerable light is thrown on the history of some of the kings by contemporary notices contained in the monuments of Egypt and Assyria. It has been the endeavour of the writer, so far as the limits of space allowed, to make full use of all these various sources of information. His labours have been much lightened by the excellent work done by many of his predecessors in the field of Sacred History, as especially by the writers of the articles on the several kings in Dr. Smith's "Dictionary of the Bible," Kitto's "Biblical Cyclopaedia," Winer's "Realworterbuch," and Ersch and Gruber's "Cyclopadie." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings and Prophets of Israel and Judah: From the Division of the Kingdom to the Babylonian Exile The three centuries and a half, which began with the division of the Hebrew empire and extended to the Babylonian exile, were in many ways the most important period in Israel's history. It was during this epoch that the Israelites ceased to be a provincial people, limited in their outlook to the narrow horizon of Palestine. Events over which they had little control brought them into close contact with the great world powers of the day, thereby vastly broadening their faith, as well as their vision of history and of their relation to the human race. It was a period marked by supreme political, social and religious crises, which fundamentally transformed Israels religion and institutions. These crises called forth the great ethical prophets of the eighth and seventh centuries B.C.; and their work and teachings made Israels experience during these trying years one of the most significant chapters in human history. These prophets were the conscience of their nation, its guides in the hour of peril, and the heralds of those great ethical and social principles which are the eternal foundations of law and society. The social evils with which they dealt were in many ways startlingly similar to those which still survive in our modern Christian civilization. Interpreted into the language of the twentieth century, their messages anticipate the conclusions and teachings of our keenest and most progressive social teachers. In pointing out popular errors in the existing social system, and in placing the responsibility for the prevailing evils squarely on the shoulders of the rich and powerful, who were using their authority and influence, not in behalf of the common welfare, but rather for their own personal advantage or for that of their class, they spoke to the present as well as to their own age. In their character and life-work, as well as in their words, they embodied the noblest ideals of intelligent, unselfish and effective patriotism. They were men who not only saw the truth but were equally able and effective in proclaiming it by word and deed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Reign of Ahab to the Decline of the Two Kingdoms Thus much must for the present suffice - the more so, as in the next Volume (which will conclude the Old Testament History) the opportunity will necessarily present itself for larger retrospect and wider survey. It only remains to add that the treatment of the subject in this Volume will be found in ac cordance with the progressive plan of this work, repeatedly in dicated in previous Volumes. Alike the critical and exegetical notes will be found more frequent and more full, and the general treatment more detailed, and designed for more ad vanced readers. A new Element in the present Volume is the light brought to bear on this period from the ancient monu ments. We live in days when more attention than ever before is given to the critical study of the Old Testament 3 in days also when attacks are chiefly directed against the trustworthiness, the credibility, and, as it seems to us, the Divine Authority, in its true sense, of the Old Testament. There are those, we will gladly believe, who can disjoint, and in logical connection with it, re-interpret the Old Testament, and yet retain their full faith in its direct Divine character, and in its preparation for the Christ. We must frankly confess that we are not of their number. There is, indeed, a general Divine character in the Old Testament, and a general preparation in it for the New, whatever historical views we may take of it, or whatever inter pretations we may give of it. We would even advance beyond this, and say that Christ and Christianity have their absolute truth, quite irrespective of the Old Testament. But to us at least Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ is the direct outcome of the Old Testament, as well as its higher fulfilment: not only a light to lighten the Gentiles, but, and even in this very respect also the glory of Thy people Israel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judah and Israel: Or, the Restoration and Conversation of the Jews and the Ten Tribes IN the Preface to the Jewish Intelligencer, published in America, the Author considered that that work would be his last. It is proper, therefore, to state the reason for his again appearing before the public as an author. During his late preaching tour through several counties, he found it to be a very prevalent idea, that all the past Christian efforts to promote the conversion of the Jews had been in vain, and come to nought, and that therefore it was not worth while to make any new attempts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering study wrestles with the perpetual problem of chronology in the Books of Kings. Starting from the conservative assumptions that the courts of Israel and Judah maintained regnal records, and that these for the most part accurately reflect regnal length, the author arrives at a new and persuasive dating for the reigns and their synchronisms. In addition, his chronological scheme includes all points of contact between Israel and Judah and external powers, especially Assyria. The result is one of the most responsible and yet most critical chronologies proposed to date, and will be the standard chronological reference for the next decade, if not longer.

This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations, scholars have attempted to solve the chronological problems associated with the mysterious numbers of the Hebrew kings. In this volume, the authors provide a coherent, sensible, and believable chronology for the Israelite and Judean kings. In their reconstruction, Hayes and Hooker take into consideration not only all of the biblical data but also all relevant ancient Near Eastern sources. Utilizing all available and reliable evidence, they establish not only regnal years for all the rulers but also specific dates for numerous events in Israelite and Judean history. In their opening chapters, the authors explain the scheme of chronological reckoning found in the books of 1-2 Kings. Their calculations are then computed without recourse to shifting understandings of the methods of reckoning or to a theory of co-regencies. The value of this work is not limited to purely chronological matters. Its implications extend to the dating of biblical sources such as the Book of the Covenant, D, P, and the Deuteronomistic History. The volume also provides insights into the socio-cultic life of biblical times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Judah and Israel: From the Birth of Solomon to the Reign of Ahab From the political we turn to the religious aspect of this history. It was indeed true, that the empire of the world was to be connected with the Davidic kingdom (ps. Ii.) - but not in the sense Of founding a great military monarchy, nor in that of attaining universal intel lectual supremacy, least of all, by conformity to the ways and practices of heathen worship, magic, and theurgy. The exaltation of Zion above the hills, and the flowing of all nations unto it, was to be brought about by the going forth Of the Law out of Zion, and of the Word of Jehovah from Jerusalem (15. Ii. 2, This - to confine ourselves to the present period of our history - had been distinctly implied in the great promise to David (2 Sam. Vii.) it was first typically realised in the choice of Jerusalem as the City of God (ps. Xlvi. Xlviii. And further presented in its aspect of peace, prosperity, and happiness in the reign of Solomon (ps. Lxxii.) to which the prophets ever afterwards pointed as the emblem of the higher blessings in the Kingdom of God (mic. Iv. 4; Zech. Iii. 10, comp. With I Kings iv. But the great work Of that reign, alike in its national and typical importance, was the building of the Temple at Jerusalem. This also has been fully described in the following pages. But already other elements were at work. The introduction of heathen worship commenced with the decline of Solomon's spirituallife. After his death, the apostasy from God attained fearful pro portions, partially and temporarily in Judah, but permanently in Israel. In the latter, from the commencement Of its separate national existence under Jeroboam, the God-chosen Sanctuary at Jerusalem, and the God-appointed priesthood were discarded; the worship of Jehovah transformed; and by its side spurious rites and heathen idolatry introduced, till, under the reign of Ahab, the religion of Baal became that of the State. This marks the high point Of apostasy in Israel. The evolving of principles of con trariety to the Divine Covenant slowly but surely led up to the final destruction of the Jewish Commonwealth. But, side by side with it, God in great mercy placed an agency, the origin, character, and Object of which have already been indicated in a previous Volume. The Prophetic Order may be regarded as an extraordinary agency, by the side of the ordinary economy of the Old Testament; and as intended, on the one hand, to com plement its provisions, and, on the other, to supplement them, either in times of religious declension, or when, as in Israel, the people were withdrawn from their influences. Hence the great ex tension Of the Prophetic Order. In such periods, and especially in the kingdom of the ten tribes. But when, during the reign Of Ahab, the religion Of Jehovah was, so to speak, repudiated, and the worship of Baal and Astarte substituted in its place, something more than even the ordinary exercise of the Prophetic Office was required. For the prophet was no longer acknowledged, and the authority of the God, Whose Messenger he was, disowned. Both these had therefore to be vindicated, before the prophetic agency could serve its purpose. This was achieved through What must be regarded, not so much as a new phase, but as a further development of the agency already at work. We mark this chiefly in the ministry of Elljah and Elisha, which was contemporary with the first Open manifestation of Israel's national apostasy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Israel and Judah: From the Call of Abraham to the Death of Nehemiah It ought assuredly to be possible so to teach the historical parts of the Old Testament to those who have reached the age of fifteen or sixteen that, when they enter into manhood, they may have nothing to unlearn on the ground of either science or history. Such are the words of Professor Driver in his introduction to the Book of Genesis (westminster Commentaries, p. Lxvi; note: the italics are his). This is the ideal, admittedly difficult of attainment, which I have set before myself in writing this book. It is a book intended for use with upper forms only and in conjunction with the Bible. In my opinion, no amount of commentary or explanation can take the place of a sound knowledge of the Biblical text, so far as scripture lessons in school are concerned. Upon this text the scripture teaching in lower forms is usually and rightly based. There are now excellent series of extracts from the Old Testament published, which give the nar rative in continuous form, while omitting matter with which junior students are not concerned. In teaching upper forms, the main principles to be kept in view should be, that there is no hard and fast line dividing sacred from profane history, and that the original records both of Biblical and secular history can be subjected to similar methods of criticism. A sixth form which has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To him the Lord sent a special message, through Azariah the. Son of Obed, saying, 'hear ye Me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; the Lord is with you, while ye be with Him; and if ye seek Him, He will be found of you; but if ye forsake Him, He will forsake Having heard these words, Asa took courage, cleansed the land of all the abominable idols and gather ed all the people to Jerusalem that they might solemnly dedicate themselves to God.
