Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 18 June 1815, Napoleon and Wellington took to the fields of Waterloo for one final, decisive battle – a battle that would put an end to over two decades of warfare and determine the fate of Europe. Yet, little is known about the significant contribution made by the 1st or King's Dragoon Guards who, ultimately, helped deny Napoleon victory. As a regiment, the KDG was the greatest contributor to the charge, made by the British heavy cavalry, fielding nearly half of the Household Brigade's sabres, but it also made the biggest sacrifice. In successfully repelling the main French assault of the day it paid a heavy price: of the 540 men who bravely fought, only thirteen of its number were still standing at the close of the battle. With the regiment severely depleted at the end of the fighting, it did not make sense for the officers and sergeants to dine separately, as was the custom. So they ate together, a tradition that continues to this day, every 18 June, with the KDG's descendant regiment 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards. Here, Richard Goldsbrough tells the remarkable story of the KDG before, during and after the Battle of Waterloo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army's campaigns in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899 were among the most dramatic and hard-fought in British military history. In 1882, the British sent an expeditionary force to Egypt to quell the Arabic Revolt and secure British control of the Suez Canal, its lifeline to India. The enigmatic British Major General Charles G. Gordon was sent to the Sudan in 1884 to study the possibility of evacuating Egyptian garrisons threatened by Muslim fanatics, the dervishes, in the Sudan. While the dervishes defeated the British forces on a number of occasions, the British eventually learned to combat the insurrection and ultimately, largely through superior technology and firepower, vanquished the insurgents in 1898. British Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography enumerates and generally describes and annotates hundreds of contemporary, current, and hard-to-find books, journal articles, government documents, and personal papers on all aspects of British military operations in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899. Arranged chronologically and topically, chapters cover the various campaigns, focusing on specific battles, leading military personalities, and the contributions of imperial nations as well as supporting services of the British Army. This definitive volume is an indispensable reference for researching imperialism, colonial history, and British military operations, leadership, and tactics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of tourists visit Whitehall each year and gaze at the Horse Guards sentries, but the full history of the building and the cavalrymen who guard it is not widely known. The Horse Guards site has been used for martial activity continuously since the mid-16th century, and this is the first book to tell its long and fascinating story. Where the sentries now stand, knights competed to become Champion at the Tilt from the time of Henry VIII. The special annual tournaments held for Elizabeth I's birthday are the direct predecessor of today's Queen's Birthday Parade, the Trooping of the Colour, held in the same arena. During the Civil War, the site was occupied by the guards of the Parliament and Palace, and guards continued to be stationed there to protect the palace long after the Restoration, overseeing the comings and goings of many monarchs and their families and courtiers. By the time New Horse Guards was built in the 1750s, it had become the first War Office, overseeing the nation's conflicts around the world. Horse Guards has continued to fulfil this military role to the present day. Throughout this beautifully illustrated book, the history of the place is interwoven with intriguing insights into the history of Britain and her kings and queens up to the present royal family, and also the development of the British Army seen in the context of its most senior regiments.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume tells the story of the seven regiments of the Household Division, along with the supporting personalities and units of London District. A subject as fascinating as it is multifarious. From the key personalities responsible for the razor-sharp execution of state ceremonial and public duties, to the historical figures who helped establish and shape a military dynasty. Travel through the history of the Household Division from its birth in 1660, with the restoration of Charles II, to its role in establishing Britain's Special Forces. It is a journey of political intrigue, cementing empire, and fighting terrorism. From the founding fathers such as George Monck, who laid the foundations for a professional British Army, to adventurers like David Stirling and Sir Frederick 'Boy' Browning, the history of the Household Division is one of almost continuous action and innovation. Supported by the honorable Artillery Company and the King's Troop, The Royal Horse Artillery, London’s Ceremonial Regiments put the pomp in circumstance, the distinction in battle, and the sobriety in the sombre notes of The Last Post.
