Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultation for the Kingdom of the Netherlands—Aruba highlights that after growing at more than 4 percent per year in 1996–2000, the Aruba economy experienced two years of retrenchment, with GDP falling an estimated 1.2 percent in 2001 and 3.8 percent in 2002. This downturn reflected a lull in investment activity, but especially weak tourism following the United States recession and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In 2003, sharply higher private and public investment and a modest revival in tourism should boost economic growth to more than 4 percent.

Adverse external shocks have led to a decline in tourism and disruption of oil refinery operations. Serious fiscal challenges need to be addressed and a fiscal adjustment program is needed to safeguard the sustainability of the public finances. Expenditure cuts and the central bank’s switch from a credit ceiling to an unremunerated reserves requirement as key policy tool is commended. The new monetary policy framework will likely increase the challenges to prudential regulation and supervision.

Book excerpt: This 2013 Article IV Consultation highlights that economic output in Aruba remains 12 percent below its pre-crisis level, with recovery slower than others in the Caribbean region. The non-oil current account (CA) balance, which mostly reflects developments in the tourism sector, has improved since mid-2000 reaching a balanced position in 2012. The overall CA balance, however, after being in surplus for years, showed volatilities in recent years reflecting oil-sector developments. In 2012, it recorded a surplus of 5 percent of GDP. In 2013, real output is projected to grow by 11⁄4 percent. Robust tourism growth and some pickup in consumption from projected deflation will support the subdued near-term recovery.

As in the other Caribbean countries, there are growing concerns in Aruba about the slowdown in economic growth over the past two decades and the consequent tepid outlook for potential growth. Tackling such concerns requires identifying the underlying factors. This paper presents an overview of Aruba’s economic growth performance since 1990, analyzes factors behind the slowdown, and discusses how potential growth can be sustained. It suggests that Aruba should aim to finance its renewable energy and other future growth initiatives sustainably.

Book Synopsis Review of Dietary Advice on Vitamin A by : Great Britain: Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition: Vitamin A Subgroup
Download or read book Review of Dietary Advice on Vitamin A written by Great Britain: Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition: Vitamin A Subgroup and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-09-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reassess the dietary advice to consumers on foods and supplements containing Vitamin A (retinol), given evidence from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey that the dietary intake for some adults might exceed the safety guidance level set by the Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals (EVM) in 2003. Liver and dietary supplements (including fish liver oils) are the main sources of retinol. The report concludes that there is insufficient evidence on the association between high intakes of retinol and poor bone health to justify a change in dietary advice for all consumers, but as a precaution for those who are regular consumers of liver (once a week or more) it may be advisable to avoid supplements containing retinol. People at risk of osteoporosis (such as postmenopausal women and older people) are also advised to limit their retinol intakes. Further research is needed on the relationship between retinol intake and bone fracture risk.

Book Synopsis Social Security Law in Small Jurisdictions by : Danny Pieters
Download or read book Social Security Law in Small Jurisdictions written by Danny Pieters and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines whether small jurisdictions (states) are confronted with specific issues providing social security and how to deal with these issues. How is social security law impacted by the smallness of the jurisdiction? First, the author examines the key concepts ‘small jurisdiction’ and ‘social security’ as he understands them in the present research. He then pays some attention to the relation between social security and social security law and subsequently makes an excursion to explore the notion of legal transplants. In the second part, the author first examines the main features characterizing small states according to the general literature on small states, focusing on features which may be relevant to social security. He also includes an overview of the (limited) literature dealing with the specific social security issues small jurisdictions have to deal with. In other words, the second part provides the reader with the status quaestionis. In the third part, the author takes a look at the social security systems of 20 selected small jurisdictions. He does so according to a uniform scheme, in order to facilitate their comparison. These 20 case studies allow him in a next part to test the correctness of the statements made in Part 2. In the fourth part, he compares the social security systems of the 20 small jurisdictions. He draws conclusions as to the main question, but also to test the validity of the current literature on the topic as described in Part 2. Special attention goes to the use of legal transplants for the definition of the personal scope of social security arrangements. In the concluding part of the book, the author formulates some suggestions for the benefit of the social security systems of the small jurisdictions, based on his research.
