Book excerpt: The kingdom of God was the prevalent theme of Jesus' teaching and that of the apostles. And yet, it is not the prevalent theme of American Christianity. For many Christians, it is not even a strong concept. Why is that? And what are the implications of this conceptual deficiency? Wayne Barrett's book is a call for renewal of kingdom thinking and kingdom living among Christ's people-particularly those in America. He advocates for Christian living that is informed by a worldview of two kingdoms: the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world. Topics include: What is the kingdom of God? Who is in it and who is excluded? How should the kingdom of God advance, and what does that advancement look like? How does a Christian discover his or her role in God's kingdom? Barrett also discusses how a Christian's own "script," relating to how one should live or even relating to one's church involvement, can prevent him or her from functioning as a kingdom citizen. The book is both a challenge and an appeal to American Christians to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Book excerpt: 'It has been slowly dawning on me over many years that there is a fundamental problem deep at the heart of Christian faith and practice as I have known them . . . we have all forgotten what the four Gospels are about.' With that surprising assertion, Tom Wright launches this ground-breaking work in which he helps us to see the gospel story in radically a new light, and to acknowledge that, for many generations, the Church has been avoiding its full impact and holding back from proclaiming its full meaning. 'Classic Wright: clear, accessible, robust, engaging and challenging.' Paula Gooder in Third Way 'Scholarly, accessible, insightful and provocative.' Christianity 'Wright argues compellingly that the twin themes of kingdom and cross are inseparably linked. . . This is a much-needed reorientation. The book makes its case for 'rethinking' cogently and deserves widespread attention.' Theology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades the evangelical protestant church in America has preached a salvation-centric Gospel of Christ. Today, almost half of protestants believe this is the complete gospel and their churches have aligned their teachings to "seek and save the lost" only. In doing so, they relegated the life, words, and works of Jesus to secondary, non-gospel status. But, what if the story of Jesus, passed down to us in the New Testament (especially Mark, Matthew and Luke), describing His life, actions, death and resurrection, accurately portrays the whole story of Jesus, the Son of God, as He lived among us and still lives with us, showing us how to live out the kingdom of God on earth? What if Jesus's life was a living gospel, as He said it was, yet it has been forgotten by the evangelical protestant church? And if this forgotten gospel has been ignored, what should the church do about it? The purpose of this book is to explore how the life, words, and works of Jesus can bring churches, pastors, denominations, and members back to the Complete Gospel of Jesus, the Christ.

Book excerpt: Jesus only called one message "gospel" the kingdom of God. Mark said at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, "Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God, saying, 'The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.'" When demons saw the new King, they trembled and cried out, "Have you come to destroy us?" After three years of preaching His kingdom, Jesus promised, "This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the earth ..." In the book of Acts, "They believe Philip preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God ..." "Forgotten Gospel" investigates: How and when our modern Gospel began to drift from that of Scripture Where the bible of Judaism specifically defined "the kingdom of God." How the gospel of the kingdom illuminates the atonement message of the apostles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last hundred and fifty years the kingdom of God has emerged as one of the most important topics in theology, New Testament studies, and the life of the church. But what exactly is the kingdom of God? What does it mean for the people of God and what does it mean for how they live in the world? In The Kingdom of God, part of the Biblical Theology for Life series, Nicholas Perrin explores this dominant biblical metaphor, one that is paradoxically the meta-center and the mystery in Jesus' proclamation. After survey interpretations by figures from Ritschl to N. T. Wright, Perrin examines the "what, who, and how" questions of the kingdom. In his sweepingly comprehensive study, Perrin contends that the kingdom is inaugurated in Jesus' earthly ministry, but its final development awaits later events in history. In between the times, however, the people of God are called to participate in the reign of God by living out the distinctly kingdom-ethic through hope, forgiveness, love, and prayer. X

Book excerpt: Contemporary evangelicals have built a "salvation culture" but not a "gospel culture." Evangelicals have reduced the gospel to the message of personal salvation. This book makes a plea for us to recover the old gospel as that which is still new and still fresh. The book stands on four arguments: that the gospel is defined by the apostles in 1 Corinthians 15 as the completion of the Story of Israel in the saving Story of Jesus; that the gospel is found in the Four Gospels; that the gospel was preached by Jesus; and that the sermons in the Book of Acts are the best example of gospeling in the New Testament. The King Jesus Gospel ends with practical suggestions about evangelism and about building a gospel culture.

"The Lost Message of Jesus" is written to stir thoughtful debate, to pose fresh questions, perhaps even to shed a little new light and help create a deeper understanding of Jesus and his message.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the theme of the kingdom of God has come to the forefront in the preaching, teaching, and popular writing of Christians of all theological persuasions. Any attempt to gain clarity on the biblical meaning of the phrase the "kingdom of God" must take the teaching of Jesus as its major point of reference; for the prominence of kingdom terminology today is directly attributable to the great frequency with which he appealed in his teaching to the notion of God's kingdom. In this little book, the author sets Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God against its Jewish background and discusses some of the characteristic emphases that appear in Jesus' message. He then identifies three broad ways in which God's kingdom operated in Jesus' ministry, which he suggests provide, at least in broad outline, an agenda for the Church today as it strives to bear witness to the "gospel of the kingdom" entrusted to it by its Lord.

Through stories and images, Jesus teaches that God’s presence among us—his powerful reign—is both mighty and quiet, both welcoming and demanding. As small as a seed and as grand as a great dinner party, the kingdom of God grows among us and transforms everyone who embraces it. In this volume of Alive in the Word, New Testament scholar Frank Matera explores three gospel passages that will orient you to this essential, transforming message of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was preparing to go out to minister in one of the towns in the Coastal Province part of Kenya, called Voi. My hosts, Home Alive church pastored by Pastor Christopher Obialor and his wife Chrisitine, once again had invited me to be a blessing to the Body of Christ. I have visited this church before and they have been great hosts to me. My friendship with the leaders and members of this congregation has grown with my last two visits. The trip to Voi was made earlier this year during my short visit to Kenya for a brief vacation and to spend time with my family members who live in Kenya. I was in Voi during the earlier part of the year for three days. During my time of prayer in my hotel room, I asked the Holy Spirit what message He had for the Body of Christ in Voi. I never step out to minister anywhere I have been invited to without first seeking God's direction. Why? Because these are God's people not my people. He knows what everybody is going through in their own personal lives and I don't. And He has a solution to their problems. And I hate going before God's people to share with them what I think God is saying to them without spending time and hearing from Him. You really cannot give what you don't have. That's another topic we have to deal with later. The impression in my spirit as I lay prostrate before God in that hotel room was very clear as the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart. He said, "Go and teach and preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. That is the message that Jesus taught and preached. That is the forgotten message that My church is not teaching and preaching today." That was it! I got my marching orders and instructions from God and I immediately knew that this message, 'The Gospel of the Kingdom of God' message is the forgotten message that the Church today is not teaching and preaching. The Holy Spirit continued speaking to my heart: "If the church wants to have the same results that Jesus got when He ministered on earth, then the church must teach and preach the same message He taught and preached."Should I shout here, "Wow" or "Boom! "to that powerful Word from the throne of grace? I got my Bible ready and started preparing for these meetings in Voi. I had my divine instructions from the Lord and that is all I needed from Him. My part was to obey and deliver the message He wanted me to deliver to His people. This book is about this forgotten message and why it is imperative for the church of Jesus Christ today to go back to what I may call the real basics; back to teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God message and not the religious trash we have been teaching and preaching today. Why is this message so important to God? Are there other gospels that are being taught and preached out there? Let us take this journey together, dig deep into scriptures and find out what the Holy Spirit says about this message. This to me is the most important and forgotten message that the Church needs to return back to. I believe your life will be impacted by this message in a powerful way just as my life was and is as I continue to study and meditate on the Message of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. My prayer for you is that you will experience the Kingdom of heaven lifestyle in your own personal life as you read this book. Get ready for the journey of your life. Gideon M. MwololoAuthor.
