Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT thoughtful man has not been perplexed by problems relating to art? An estimable and charming Russian lady I knew, felt the charm of the music and ritual of the services of the Russo-Greek Church so strongly that she wished the peasants, in whom she was interested, to retain their blind faith, though she herself disbelieved the church doctrines. "Their lives are so poor and bare-they have so little art, so little poetry and colour in their lives- Let them at least enjoy what they have; it would be cruel to undeceive them," said she. A false and antiquated view of life is supported by means of art, and is inseparably linked to some Manifestations of art which we enjoy and prize. If the false view of life be destroyed this art will cease to appear valuable. Is it best to screen the error for the sake of preserving the art? Or should the art be sacrificed for the sake of truthfulness? Again and again in history a dominant church has utilised art to maintain its sway over men. Reformers (early Christians, Mohammedans, Puritans, and others) have perceived that art bound people to the old faith, and they were angry with art. These works, in chronological order, are " My Confession ". A Criticism of Dogmatic Theology, which has never been translated. The Four Gospels Harmonised and Translated, of which only two parts, out of three, have as yet appeared in English. What I Believe, sometimes called My Religion. The Gospelin Brief. What are we to do then? sometimes called in English What to do? On Life, which is not an easy work in the original, and has not been satisfactorily translated. The Kingdom of God is within you; and The Christian Teaching, which appeared after What is Art? though it was written before it. To these scientific works I am inclined to add The Kteutzer Sonata, with the Sequel or Postscript explaining its purpose; for though The Kreutzer Sonata is a story, the understanding of sexual problems, dealt with explicitly in the Sequel, is an integral part of that comprehension of life which causes Tolstoy to admire Christ, Buddha, or Francis of Assisi.

The first is religious, and shows in Count Tolstoys earnest and eloquent manner the meaning of Christ's words which he takes for his text, - ""The Kingdom of God is within you."" The outward forms of religion, however helpful they may be to some souls, are not essential; the superstitions with which Faith sometimes clothes or masks herself may or may not be uplifting; but the foundation of Christianity is the truth contained in Christ's words, his simple, plain, undogmatic commands and prohibitions

Download or read book A Letter to a Hindu written by M K Gandhi and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is Tolstoy's masterpiece on nonviolence in the first new English translation in decades by Damian Westfall. Also included with A Letter to a Hindu is the complete correspondence between Tolstoy and Gandhi, an introduction by Gandhi and a new preface and epilogue by Damian Westfall the translator. In 1908 Tarak Nath Das, an Indian revolutionary and editor of "Free Hindustan", a magazine published to further the efforts of emancipating the Indians from the British colonial rule, sent Leo Tolstoy two issues of "Free Hindustan" and a letter explaining the oppression and subjugation of the people of India by the English and asked the world famous writer for advice on the best way to achieve freedom from the minority who enslaved 200,000,000 people and on December 14th, 1908, Tolstoy began writing what would be inevitably entitled "A Letter to a Hindu" in Russian, but it was soon translated into English by an anonymous writer and in 1909 Das published "A Letter to a Hindu" in an edition of "Free Hindustan", his magazine. A young lawyer turned activist who worked nonstop for the emancipation of India named Gandhi read Tolstoy's "A Letter to A Hindu" in "Free Hindustan" while living in South Africa where he resided with a population of 30,000 other Indians who were being oppressed and subjugated by the white Christians in the Transvaal province of South Africa. Gandhi was already a follower of Tolstoy after he read and was radicalized by Tolstoy's "The Kingdom of GOD is Within You" and immediately Gandhi knew he wanted to publish "A Letter to a Hindu" in his own magazine "Indian Opinion" that he was printing and distributing from Transvaal. And so, the young Gandhi wrote to Tolstoy to make sure that Tolstoy actually wrote the letter and asked Tolstoy if he, Gandhi Himself, could translate "A Letter to A Hindu" into the Indian dialect Guajarati and this began a correspondence of six letters between Gandhi and Tolstoy which concluded with Tolstoy's death in 1910 at 82 years old. The story of India's nonviolent revolution led by Gandhi is amazing and inspiring, but the reader of "A Letter to a Hindu" doesn't need to know all the details of the Indian problem presented by Tarak Nath, they are not necessary, because the Indian situation is used by Tolstoy only as an example. It is the theories presented by Tolstoy that are the guts of the letter, and at its center is the reason for publishing these texts, Tolstoy's thoughts on the concept of nonresistance to evil by violence (Matthew 5:38-42, Luke 6:27-31) which includes giving good to evil, not retaliating, loving your enemies, and most importantly the order from Christ that if someone slaps your face you should then turn your face so they can hit the other side as well. This is usually referred to as "to turn the other cheek" and it is roundly negated and discarded by most pastors and Christians, but this is a direct command from Christ that cannot be ignored or rejected, and this is the core of Tolstoy's ethics: Nonresistance to Evil by Violence.

Book Synopsis Art for God's Sake by : Philip Graham Ryken
Download or read book Art for God's Sake written by Philip Graham Ryken and published by P & R Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does God say about the arts? Can you be a Christian and an artist? How do the arts impact your church? The creation sings to us with the visual beauty of God's handiwork. But what of man-made art? Much of it is devoid of sacred beauty and is often rejected by Christians. Christian artists struggle to find acceptance within the church. If all of life is to be viewed as "under the lordship of Christ," can we rediscover what God's plan is for the arts? Philip Graham Ryken brings into sharp focus a biblical view of the arts and the artists who make art for God's sake. This is a concise yet comprehensive treatment of the major issue of the arts for all who seek answers.
