Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Go Up Kettle Creek is a historical portrayal of a river and the people who made their living along its banks and tributaries. Drawing upon the personal recollections and oral traditions of longtime residents, William Lynwood Montell describes a century and a half of life in the Upper Cumberland. Montell organized his material according to the topics that dominated his tape-recorded conversations with residents of the area-farming, logging and rafting, steamboating, the Civil War-topics that the people themselves saw as important in their history. In reconstructing the past, the author also illuminates the relationship between geographic and economic factors in the region; the prolonged affects of a cataclysmic event, the Civil War, on the isolated area; and the impact of modernization, in the form of "hard" roads and cheap, TVA-supplied electricity, on the traditional ways of people. First published in 1983, this book is now available in paperback for the first time. Included with this edition is a new foreword in which Montell and Mary Robbins, executive director of the Tennessee Upper Cumberland Tourism Association, describe changes in the area that have occured since the book's initial appearance. The Author: William Lynwood Montell, now retired, was coordinator of programs in folk and interculturual studies at Western Kentucky University. His numerous books include Ghosts along the Cumberland and The Saga of Coe Ridge.

There has never been a thorough statewide guide written specifically for flyfishing in Washington. Much like Oregon, this state combines a high population of flyfishers with a host of prime flyfishing water. With steelhead and salmon runs, trophy trout in lakes and rivers throughout the state, and the occasional smallmouth and largemouth bass thrown in, Washington has something to offer even the most discriminating angler. This guide will show you maps with access points, river mileage, campsites, and more, for each river system, along with detailed descriptions of rivers, tributaries and lakes, with hatch charts for each. Our format makes calling fly shops for up-to-the minute information or setting up motel reservations in a new area a snap.

Book excerpt: In elegant, sensual prose, Michael Crummey crafts a haunting tale set in Newfoundland at the turn of the 19th century. A richly imagined story about love, loss and the heartbreaking compromises—both personal and political—that undermine lives, River Thieves is a masterful debut novel. Published in Canada and the United States, it joins a wave of classic literature from eastern Canada, including the works of Alistair MacLeod, Wayne Johnston and David Adams Richards, while resonating at times with the spirit of Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain and Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy. An enthralling story of passion and suspense, River Thieves captures both the vast sweep of history and the intimate lives of a deeply emotional and complex cast of characters caught in its wake.

Book excerpt: "'I could care less, ' Hannah Stephenson says with a faux shrug, feigning that tone of contemporary diffidence and cool, but everywhere in In the Kettle, the Shriek this fine new poet indicates that "instead, I care so much." Here is a poet of clarity and connective grace, full of good will and wily stories alike-funny, neighborly, amused, observant, she's a storyteller with an aphorist's flair for precision. And in In the Kettle, the Shriek she gives testimony to our lives together and our struggles alone, turning at the deepest moments to her highest virtues of sanity and acceptance: 'the things that are going to happen, / let me let them.' This is how Hannah Stephenson makes poetic testimony into a manner of lyric, laic testament." -David Baker// "In the Kettle, The Shriek is excellent: inquisitive, taut, ironic, tough, smart, sensitive, tensed, ready. Nothing is taken for granted in these poems, not the cosmic or the molecular. Stephenson explores how we hold ourselves together lately, what can be named or called into us, and our relations with the allegedly inanimate. The unpunctuated questions that comprise many of the poems are an essential part of what this poet is up to. Those queries become the glue of this universe, the building blocks of its matter and anti matter, and also a voice of the zeitgeist." -Amy Gerstler
