This book was released on 2006 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upanishads has now been expanded and brought out in two volumes, with much new material published for the first time in book form. The single volume The Upanishads has been discontinued, with all its content included in the two new volumes, each available as an independent book. The Kena Upanishad is concerned with the relation of mind-consciousness to Brahman-consciousness , writes Sri Aurobindo in his commentary on this work. The material world and the physical life exist for us only by virtue of our internal self and our internal life. According as our mental instruments represent to us the external world, according as our vital force in obedience to the mind deals with its impacts and objects, so will be our outward life and existence. Along with Sri Aurobindo's final translation of and commentary on the Kena, this book includes his translations of six other Upanishads as well as several other translations and commentaries, and essays such as 'The Philosophy of the Upanishads'.

The translator has accomplished his task in a most praiseworthy manner by giving a faithful translation, without in any way detracting from the strength or clarity of the original commentary. The inclusion of a ‘word index’ of the entire text has added to the worth of the book.

Book excerpt: This Upanishad forms a part of the Brahmana belonging to the Katha Shakha of the Krishna Yajur Veda. It stands in a class by itself. It combines charming poetry, elevating mysticism, and profound philosophy. The subject of the mystery of death is introduced through the medium of an interesting anecdote; and the teaching of the Upanishad is presented in the form of a dialogue between a mere boy, Nachiketa, and Yama, the King of Death. With the text of the Upanishad in Devanagari, a lucid and faithful translation of the text and commentary, relevant notes, reference to quotations, and index to texts, this Upanishad is a must for all students of Vedanta. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was reading the Mandukya, Isa, Kena. I had a copy of the Eight Upanishads and the great Shankara's commentaries. Shankara: the early 8th-century founder of Advaita Vedanta is the go-to sage in that world. And so I went to him. But somewhere in the Isa Upanishad I began to notice a curiosity. Shankara was not always interpreting the words of the Isa but adding his own, not to necessarily clarify what was there, but to make it fit with what he was saying was there, what must be there! And then it got curiouser and curiouser. I noticed almost all of the other translations read were most often translating Shankara rather than the words themselves. From that point, it was decided to go back and start translating the entire work. The intent was to merely translate the words as best possible, utilizing online Sanskrit dictionaries, other translations, and web search engines. Also, the words would be strung together in the order they were written with as few connecting words as possible, only to be used to make sense of the words in an English phrasing. Moreover, and most importantly, intuition would be replied upon for any ultimate choice of rendition. The raw words would sit there until a flash of insight fashioned them together, choosing a more appropriate synonymous word and maybe a better connector, with the mandate still being word-for-word translation. In this way, the Kena would translate itself. To my personal amazement, what emerged was a direct path of wisdom. There was no sectarian influence there whatsoever. In fact, the only words ever read here that came as close to the freshness of the Kena were those of Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ramana Maharshi and some early Chan writings. Included in this book is that initial translation with the simple notes kept at the time. But the transcreation, formed after the translation was finished, is the main text. The intent for this was to keep all the words there there, and add others only for clarification, structure, and rhythm. So this book will consist of this front matter of Preface and Introduction. Then, the transcreation follows. Next is the transcreation again, but with commentary after each verse. Next is the translation and notes. Last is an afterword, where the commentary on the Kena is made a little more manifest. Enjoy.

However much you may study the road map, you will never reach the pilgrim centre. Study the map, roll it up and keep it handy by your side, as it may be useful en route the journey. Now get up from your chair, get into your vehicle and move on along the way the map indicates so clearly." "Work is unavoidable. Choose a field that inspires you, that is in line with your nobler tendencies."

Book excerpt: The Upanishads are late Vedic Sanskrit texts of religious teaching and ideas still revered in Hinduism. Of all Vedic literature, the Upanishads alone are widely known, and their central ideas are at the spiritual core of Hinduism. Around 108 Upanishads are known, of which the first dozen or so are the oldest and most important and are referred to as the principal or main Upanishads. The Kena Upanishad is notable in its discussion of Brahman with attributes and without attributes, and for being a treatise on "purely conceptual knowledge".
