Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Amos "Coop" Cooper of Wichita, now retired from the Wichita Police Department, isn't surprised when he is asked to investigate a case; he is shocked, however, to learn he has been personally requested by Judge Elmo Wells. Coop and the judge never liked each other or got along, so why is Wells asking for him after so many years off the force? It turns out that Wells' wife, Marilou, is missing, having boarded a plane in Wichita without arriving in Boston to meet her mother as planned. Coop sees this as an open-and-shut case: Marilou must have changed planes and arrived at another destination via a connecting flight. The only problem is that Marilou's flight to Boston was nonstop. As Coop looks more closely at the disappearance, he discovers that there are plenty of people who might be angry at the judge, giving him numerous suspects but few leads. What's more, secrets seem to surround Marilou. How did the judge's wife disappear, and who's behind the caper that brought Coop out of retirement?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and The Frozen River comes a “genuinely surprising whodunit” (USA Today) that tantalizingly reimagines a scandalous murder mystery that rocked the nation. One summer night in 1930, Judge Joseph Crater steps into a New York City cab and is never heard from again. Behind this great man are three women, each with her own tale to tell: Stella, his fashionable wife, the picture of propriety; Maria, their steadfast maid, indebted to the judge; and Ritzi, his showgirl mistress, willing to seize any chance to break out of the chorus line. As the twisted truth emerges, Ariel Lawhon’s wickedly entertaining debut mystery transports us into the smoky jazz clubs, the seedy backstage dressing rooms, and the shadowy streets beneath the Art Deco skyline. Don't miss Ariel Lawhon's new book, The Frozen River!

Book Synopsis Universals of Legal Reasoning by Judges by : Thomas Lundmark
Download or read book Universals of Legal Reasoning by Judges written by Thomas Lundmark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universals in Legal Reasoning by Judges explores and expounds the usage of rules to justify judicial decisions. Inspired by Savigny's canons of interpretation, and informed by the author's years of study and teaching in Germany, the book constructs a matrix for all legal argumentation in place of the so-called rules of interpretation, classifying justificatory arguments into four categories: textual, historical, purposive, and system-contextual. Along these categories, the book reveals certain universals while dispelling the confusion and mystery surrounding reasoning from judicial case decisions. This it does — simply and elegantly — by equating reasoning from case decisions with reasoning from statute. A myriad of examples, primarily from Germany, California, and the United Kingdom, show how these arguments find universal application. From start to finish, this book is itself an argument: an argument for judicial transparency and candour, which requires that judges reveal their thoughts and motivations-their ultimate reasons. This is necessary to enhance the persuasiveness and efficacy of judicial precedents, to foster democratic legitimacy, and to permit political accountability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of August 6, 1930, Joseph Force Crater, a newly appointed judge and prominent figure in many circles of Manhattan, hailed a taxi in the heart of Broadway and vanished into thin air. Despite a decades-long international manhunt led by the New York Police Department’s esteemed Missing Persons Bureau, the reason for Crater’s disappearance remains a confounding mystery. In the early months of the investigation, evidence implicated and imperiled New York’s top officials, including then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mayor Jimmy Walker, as well as the city’s Tammany Hall political machine, lawyers and judges, and a theater mogul. Drawing on new sources, including NYPD case files and court records, and overlooked evidence discovered years later, Riegel pieces together the puzzle of what likely happened to Joseph Crater and why. To uncover the mystery, he delves into Crater’s ascension into the scintillating and corrupt world of Manhattan in the Roaring Twenties and Jazz Age. In turn, the story of the judge’s vanishing amid the Great Depression unfolds as a harbinger of the disappearance of his lost metropolis and its transformation into modern-day New York City.
