Book excerpt: There are some moments in our life which are hard to forget. The joy of being in love for the first time, the moment when you receive your first salary, the kiss of a loved one, the birth of your child, your baby’s first steps and the subsequent fall….and the moment you can fit in your old pants after weeks of starvation and jogging around. Only to gain it back slowly in a few months. You know we get busy- work, life, the boss gets in our way and our dreams, as inches slip slowly by, when one fine day you try to fit in again in those old pants for your cousin’s weddings and reality comes staring back at you in the bathroom mirror. ‘Too many laddoos this Diwali, Sigh’. Another Diet Book. Why? Yet another diet book. Yep, I understand. There are already hundreds of them out there. Why do I need another one? There are as many books out there as there are diets. Many are excellent, some are good and some are outrightly bad. The problem is that which are excellent are tough to read. With footnotes going in pages and half the books dedicated to references, they are not much fun either. Simplicity is difficult. Try explaining how an airplane flies to a six-year-old and see if you can do it. Damn! It is difficult even for aeronautical engineers. So when scientists talk to other scientists, they can talk in their language and explain everything to each other. But who will teach us normal everyday people what the hell is going on with our bodies? I will tell you who- another layperson. But why fun? Because six-year-olds refuse to learn anything if it's not fun enough. But why a vegetarian book? Because it is so out of fashion that nobody is talking about it. People are talking about veganism, they talk about carnivores, about low carb, keto but nobody likes to talk about plain old vegetarians. As if these people don't exist.

Book excerpt: This guide explores visible mending techniques in both hands-on projects and thoughtful insight about how mending relates to mindful well-being. Mending Matters explores sewing on two levels: First, it includes more than twenty projects that showcase visible mending—styles that are edgy, modern, and bold, yet draw on traditional stitching. It does all this with just four simple mending techniques: exterior patches, interior patches, slow stitches, darning, and weaving. In addition, the book addresses the way mending leads to a more mindful relationship to fashion and to overall well-being. In essays that accompany each how-to chapter, Katrina Rodabaugh explores mending as a metaphor for appreciating our own naturally flawed selves. She also examines the ways in which mending teaches us new skills, self-reliance, and confidence, all gained from making things with our own hands.

Maybe you learned to sew in school and have a sewing machine, but it hasn't seen the outside of the closet since your last move. Or maybe you are completely new to the craft, with a lot of enthusiasm, but no idea how to thread your machine. No matter where you're coming from in terms of experience, this sewing workbook offers four basic patterns--two tops, a skirt, and a pair of pants--that empower you to express your personal style and make clothes that are comfortable for your body type. After explaining the basic concepts of sewing and construction, 100 Acts of Sewing designer Sonya Philip then provides suggestions for mixing the basic patterns together to create new garment iterations as you gain confidence--structural adjustments such as full bust, no bust, long torso, big, small, etc., as well as a range of possible alterations and embellishments including sleeves, pockets, hems, and more! Going beyond simple pattern instructions, this book will make sewing garments accessible for every body type--each pattern comes in sizes ranging from XS to 5X. With inspiring essays on Sonya's sewing philosophy that speak to the slow and ethical fashion movement, this will be the go-to guide for all aspirational and seasoned sewists.

Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo—he’s just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn’t absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him. In Goodbye, Things Sasaki modestly shares his personal minimalist experience, offering specific tips on the minimizing process and revealing how the new minimalist movement can not only transform your space but truly enrich your life. The benefits of a minimalist life can be realized by anyone, and Sasaki’s humble vision of true happiness will open your eyes to minimalism’s potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author Mary Kassian provides readers a biblical guide to becoming the strong, resilient, capable women God created them to be. Our culture teaches us that it's important for women to be strong. The Bible agrees. Unfortunately, culture's idea of what makes a woman strong doesn't always align with the Bible's. As a result, Christians often have a skewed view of what constitutes strength. In The Right Kind of Strong, Mary Kassian delves into Paul's exhortation in 2 Timothy about the women of the church in Ephesus and uncovers warnings and truths about seven habits that can sap women's strength. She helps readers avoid these pitfalls by carefully considering the people they allow into their lives, taking control of their minds by taking every thought captive, quickly and regularly confessing sin, intentionally engaging their emotions, living out what they’re learning, developing confident convictions, and embracing their human weakness and leaning on the Lord. She reveals how, by implementing these seven habits, Christian women can walk in freedom and grow to be strong God's way.

Mosse "Lemke's interviews with 14 gay men, mainly working class, not only encompass a range of gay lifestyles... but reflect almost a century of German history.... Ultimately, love and a steady partnership are upheld as the ideal." --Publishers Weekly "These narratives provide helpful insight into daily life in the GDR--a state that highly valued conformity--as lived by a minority rarely acknowledged." --Library Journal "... vividly portray the men's trials, tragedies, and triumphs... these memoirs are engagingly provocative.... will serve as a treasure house for future historians, sociologists, and other researchers." --Lambda Book Report "Not just gay men, but anyone with a little humanity will find it rewarding to spend a few hours listening to these men." --Hungry Mind Review "... a rare, intensive glimpse into another community and another culture." --A Different Light Review "The 14 compelling interviews... chronicle gay male experience prior to the dramatic events of the last two years." --On the Issues Jürgen Lemke's collection of interviews with East German homosexual men caused a sensation in the East, where it was hailed as "a milestone in the history of homosexual men in the GDR." The book presents sustained portraits of fourteen men from different generations and classes, "in the closet" and out. Together they provide a penetrating view into the lives of gay men in Germany from the time of Hitler until the final year of the separate socialist state.
