Book excerpt: Life and Death . . . Two words with such opposite meaning and which inflict such contradictory emotions and yet are so closely intertwined in our lives. As parents, we bring meaning and life into this world through our children. Our lives become defined as a result. We learn the joy, hardship, and responsibility of shaping an innocent life. But a day will come when that life will be taken. For some, death will come too soon. Thus is the story of my son, Brian Nicholas Hoeflinger, who died unexpectedly at age 18. Brian was drinking alcohol the night he died and drove drunk. His car struck a tree and his life was ended. Nothing about Brian's life suggested that he would meet this kind of untimely end. He was a gifted student and accomplished athlete. He was always generous with his time and words of encouragement to anyone who needed help. He was a good boy who made a mistake, and that one mistake cost him his life. That is the harsh reality of teenage drinking. I'll never forget the image of my son lying there dead on a cold gurney in Trauma room 24 at Toledo Hospital, a room that I have been in so many times before as a neurosurgeon but never as a father. His lifeless body lay there almost as though he were asleep, and I wished he were only asleep but I knew he was dead and would never come back home with us. It was the worst singular feeling that I have ever experienced in my life. The second worst experience in my life was telling my 3 other children later that night that their older brother Brian was dead. It was heart breaking to watch Kevin, Julie, and Christie say goodbye to their big brother forever that night. Nothing can ever prepare you for such an event. And yet from this tragedy has come guidance and hope for others not to make the same mistake. This book will take you on a personal journey through the life and death of my son. You will see through my eyes the pain and agony of losing a child, but you will also experience the love, inspiration, and hope that has resulted. By reading this book, you will learn how more lives will be touched and saved through the life and death of my son than I could ever accomplish as a neurosurgeon. This is a book that every parent and every teenager should read.

Book excerpt: ". . . a wonderful teaching tool for those who are welcoming refugees into their community."—The New York Times With haunting echoes of the current refugee crisis this beautifully illustrated book explores the unimaginable decisions made as a family leave their home and everything they know to escape the turmoil and tragedy brought by war. This book will stay with you long after the last page is turned. From the author: The Journey is actually a story about many journeys, and it began with the story of two girls I met in a refugee center in Italy. After meeting them I realized that behind their journey lay something very powerful. So I began collecting more stories of migration and interviewing many people from many different countries. A few months later, in September 2014, when I started studying a Master of Arts in Illustration at the Academy of Lucerne, I knew I wanted to create a book about these true stories. Almost every day on the news we hear the terms "migrants" and "refugees" but we rarely ever speak to or hear the personal journeys that they have had to take. This book is a collage of all those personal stories and the incredible strength of the people within them.

Book excerpt: Ask any parent what they want most for their child, and most likely you'll hear the same answer again and again: to see their children grow up into happy, healthy adults whose lives count for something. But ask those same parents what they're doing to equip their children for such a life and you'll get embarrassed silence. Finally, parents can find help for this crucial task in a book that is encouraging, easy to grasp, and filled with great practical suggestions. In Launching Your Kids for Life, Bob and Cheryl Reccord liken the job of equipping your children for success in life to the procedure that NASA undertakes to prepare for a shuttle launch. The Reccords, along with their friends Dr. Tommy Holloway, past director of the NASA Space Program and three-time shuttle astronaut David Leetsma point out that just as the shuttle must break through the Earth's gravitational force into space, so too must children break free into adulthood. But our children can't do it on their own. They need our help. They need us to equip them, to prepare them, to help them discover their life's mission, and to celebrate the milestones along the way. If we learn how to do this, then we can be sure that they can fly anywhere their wings will take them.

Book excerpt: Journey Girls.....3…..Traveling to Indy, takes place one year after the marriage of DOC and Meg, the death of Miss Kate, and the addition of beautiful baby Katherine Elinor who is fondly called “Katie.” Anna and JFJ are seeking love and approval from family and friends as they advance their relationship. Life has taken many twists and turns for everyone, but especially Meghan. As she stands at her farmhouse sink looking out the window, she watches DOC pushing Katie in her baby swing hanging from the old oak tree. She sees the bright sun reflecting off of his wide gold wedding ring. She wonders, is this a dream? No, she quickly tells herself. The nightmares of years past, of Jack’s death, of surviving the pain and grief, are over. She walks out through the garden full of color and fragrance to DOC and Katie, as big strong hands circle her shoulders. Baby kisses, jabber, teething rings, and wedding rings are new blessings. Meg and Ellie are each thriving in their businesses and as always, in full support of each other. Meg has developed Marigold’s to include additional Interior Design classes to complement her ever-growing consulting business. Grandma Annabelle would be so very proud of Ellie, who has taken the famous Annabelle’s Bakery to now include a trendy café. The breakfast, brunch, and lunch menu is very much the hit of Savannah. Anna has a new project and she is happily painting a mural on Katie’s walls and sparkling stars on her ceiling that will glow in the dark. She has taken her “godmom” role very seriously and she is totally in love with baby Katie. Lucy has a new friend. A new princess now shares everyone’s attention and occasionally crawls toward Lucy’s water bowl, spilling it. Life is full of family and friends, and then the unthinkable, unbelievable, unexplainable happens when Jeff arrives in Savannah.

While adolescents live in an environment that can move too fast, even for them, their parents are left wondering what teens need from them in order to be more successful in life. Sadly, these real conversations about needs and wants rarely occur. Within a thought-provoking presentation, high school counselor Kevin Kuczynski shares the results of thousands of interactions and conversations with teenagers that provide insight into what teenagers are really thinking and feeling, and often keep from their parents for fear of consequences for their honesty. Their heartfelt stories offer a glimpse into a variety of adolescent challenges that include family turmoil, divorce, feeling unloved, and how they see their parents as they struggle with homework, sexual choices, dating trials, the temptations of drugs or alcohol, and much more. While Kuczynski pulls back the curtain to reveal their obstacles, he includes personal commentary and introspective questions that encourage open communication from both sides to create healthier relationships. Real Life Conversations is a reflective guide that brings awareness to the challenges of teenagers and how their parents’ choices impact them.

Book excerpt: A haunting chronicle of what endures when the world we know is swept away On a day like any other, on a rafting trip down Utah’s Green River, Stéphane Gerson’s eight-year-old son, Owen, drowned in a spot known as Disaster Falls. That night, as darkness fell, Stéphane huddled in a tent with his wife, Alison, and their older son, Julian, trying to understand what seemed inconceivable. “It’s just the three of us now,” Alison said over the sounds of a light rain and, nearby, the rushing river. “We cannot do it alone. We have to stick together.” Disaster Falls chronicles the aftermath of that day and their shared determination to stay true to Alison’s resolution. At the heart of the book is an unflinching portrait of a marriage tested. Husband and wife grieve in radically different ways that threaten to isolate each of them in their post-Owen worlds. (“He feels so far,” Stéphane says when Alison shows him a selfie Owen had taken. “He feels so close,” she says.) With beautiful specificity, Stéphane shows how they resist that isolation and reconfigure their marriage from within. As Stéphane navigates his grief, the memoir expands to explore how society reacts to the death of a child. He depicts the “good death” of his father, which reveals an altogther different perspective on mortality. He excavates the history of the Green River—rife with hazards not mentioned in the rafting company’s brochures. He explores how stories can both memorialize and obscure a person’s life—and how they can rescue us. Disaster Falls is a powerful account of a life cleaved in two—raw, truthful, and unexpectedly consoling.

Blige, and Chiwetel Ejiofor* *Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, Entertainment Weekly, and more* The New York Times bestselling account of a young African-American man who escaped Newark, NJ, to attend Yale, but still faced the dangers of the streets when he returned is, “nuanced and shattering” (People) and “mesmeric” (The New York Times Book Review). When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert’s life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics. But it didn’t get easier. Robert carried with him the difficult dual nature of his existence, trying to fit in at Yale, and at home on breaks. A compelling and honest portrait of Robert’s relationships—with his struggling mother, with his incarcerated father, with his teachers and friends—The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace encompasses the most enduring conflicts in America: race, class, drugs, community, imprisonment, education, family, friendship, and love. It’s about the collision of two fiercely insular worlds—the ivy-covered campus of Yale University and the slums of Newark, New Jersey, and the difficulty of going from one to the other and then back again. It’s about trying to live a decent life in America. But most all this “fresh, compelling” (The Washington Post) story is about the tragic life of one singular brilliant young man. His end, a violent one, is heartbreaking and powerful and “a haunting American tragedy for our times” (Entertainment Weekly).
