Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. 40: January-June, 1918 About 29 g. Of ammonia were contained in a steel bomb of cc. Capacity. The heat capacity was determined with reference to water by a method of substitution in which a second identical bomb was adjusted to contain such an amount of water that the heat capacities of the two bombs were the same. The calorimetric method of mixtures was em ployed to measure the relative heat capacities. The calorimeter consisted of a Dewar vessel. An ingenious automatic device was used to transfer the bomb to the calorimeter from the preheater in a definite manner. T he results of two determinations are given, being the mean specific heat capacities between 0° and and between 20° and respectively. Book excerpt: The genus Mycobacterium is the cause of a number of serious and widespread human and animal diseases that have proved notoriously difficult to eradicate from their hosts and from the community. Whilst most of the 60 or so species of mycobacteria are harmless, two species are responsible for the major human diseases; tuberculosis and leprosy. The epidemiology of mycobacterial diseases is well documented and treatment is available through a number of effective antimicrobial agents, yet negligent use of control measures has permitted human tuberculosis to become a global emergency and the cause of one in four preventable adult deaths, with the emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacilli. In this symposium, distinguished"

Book excerpt: Nanodroplets, the basis of complex and advanced nanostructures such as quantum rings, quantum dots and quantum dot clusters for future electronic and optoelectronic materials and devices, have attracted the interdisciplinary interest of chemists, physicists and engineers. This book combines experimental and theoretical analyses of nanosized droplets which reveal many attractive properties. Coverage includes nanodroplet synthesis, structure, unique behaviors and their nanofabrication, including chapters on focused ion beam, atomic force microscopy, molecular beam epitaxy and the "vapor-liquid- solid" route. Particular emphasis is given to the behavior of metallic nanodroplets, water nanodroplets and nanodroplets in polymer and metamaterial nanocomposites. The contributions of leading scientists and their research groups will provide readers with deeper insight into the chemical and physical mechanisms, properties, and potential applications of various nanodroplets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our society depends heavily on metals. They are ubiquitous construction materials, critical interconnects in integrated circuits, common coinage materials, and more. Excitingly, new uses for metals are emerging with the advent of nanoscience, as metal crystals with nanoscale dimensions can display new and tunable properties. The optical and photothermal properties of metal nanocrystals have led to cancer diagnosis and treatment platforms now in clinical trials, while, at the same time, the ability to tune the surface features of metal nanocrystals is giving rise to designer catalysts that enable more sustainable use of precious resources. These are just two examples of how metal nanocrystals are addressing important social needs.

Book excerpt: Explore this comprehensive discussion of the foundational and advanced topics in plasmonic catalysis from two leaders in the field Plasmonic Catalysis: From Fundamentals to Applications delivers a thorough treatment of plasmonic catalysis, from its theoretical foundations to myriad applications in industry and academia. In addition to the fundamentals, the book covers the theory, properties, synthesis, and various reaction types of plasmonic catalysis. It also covers its applications in reactions including oxidation, reduction, nitrogen fixation, CO2 reduction, and more. The book characterizes plasmonic catalytic systems and describes their properties, tackling the integration of conventional methods as well as new methods able to unravel the optical, electronic, and chemical properties of these systems. It also describes the fundamentals of controlled synthesis of metal nanoparticles relevant to plasmonic catalysis, as well as practical examples thereof. Plasmonic Catalysis covers a wide variety of other practical topics in the field, including hydrogenation reactions and the harvesting of LSPR-excited charge carriers. Readers will also benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to plasmonic catalysis, a theory of plasmons for catalysis and mechanisms, as well as optical properties of plasmonic-catalytic nanostructures An exploration of the synthesis of plasmonic nanoparticles for photo and electro catalysis, as well as plasmonic catalysis towards oxidation reactions and hydrogenation reactions Discussions of plasmonic catalysis for multi-electron processes and artificial photosynthesis and N2 fixation An examination of control over reaction selectivity in plasmonic catalysis Perfect for catalytic chemists, materials scientists, photochemists, and physical chemists, Plasmonic Catalysis: From Fundamentals to Applications will also earn a place in the libraries of physicists who seek a one-stop resource to enhance their understanding of applications in plasmonic catalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, great focus has been placed upon polymer thin films. These polymer thin films are important in many technological applications, ranging from coatings and adhesives to organic electronic devices, including sensors and detectors. Electrochemical polymerization is preferable, especially if the polymeric product is intended for use as polymer thin films, because electrogeneration allows fine control over the film thickness, an important parameter for fabrication of devices. Moreover, it was demonstrated that it is possible to modify the material properties by parameter control of the electrodeposition process. Electrochemistry is an excellent tool, not only for synthesis, but also for characterization and application of various types of materials. This book provides a timely overview of a current state of knowledge regarding the use of electropolymerization for new materials preparation, including conducting polymers and various possibilities of applications.

This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For chemists, attempting to mimic nature by synthesizing complex natural products from raw material is a challenge that is fraught with pitfalls. To tackle this unique but potentially rewarding task, researchers can rely on well-established reactions and methods of practice, or apply their own synthesis methods to verify their potential. Whatever the goal and its complexity, there are multiple ways of achieving it. We must now establish a strategic and effective plan that requires the minimum number of steps, but lends itself to widespread use. This book is structured around the study of a dozen target products (butyrolactone, macrolide, indole compound, cyclobutanic terpene, spiro- and polycyclic derivatives, etc.). For each product, the different disconnections are presented and the associated syntheses are analyzed step by step. The key reactions are described explicitly, followed by diagrams showing the range of impact of certain transformations. This set of data alone is conducive to understanding syntheses and indulging in this difficult, but worthwhile activity.
