Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of various traditional Middle Eastern food products and beverages and investigates their chemical, microbial and physical profiles. The authors selected 5 traditional Jordanian products that represent the region’s historical foods and beverages and examined them with a focus on their chemical composition and preparation, as well as features such as food safety and quality management. The first chapter provides a general introduction to traditional foods in Jordan. Subsequent chapters then shed light on specific product classes, including Shaneenah, a popular fermented dairy drink; Mujaddara and Rashoof, two products based on lentils; Kebab products; soft cheese; and Muhallabiaah, a traditional milk pudding. This book offers a valuable reference guide to many traditional/historical products in the Middle East, and due to region’s historical influence on the Mediterranean diet, it is also of interest to researchers in southern Europe.

Although it is not richly endowed with material resources its political significance in the region gives it considerable authority. This book focuses on the economic development of Jordan over the last decade. It analyses the structural changes the economy has undergone and examines the experience of the key sectors. It also looks at the contribution of foreign aid and emigrant workers’ remittances to the economy. The book concludes that there is a significant potential for the Jordanian economy but the current political and economic problems facing it are daunting. First published in 1987.

Book excerpt: In Jordan, water — an essential factor of economic growth and social development — is scarce. The imbalance between the supply and demand of this precious resource is evidently at the cost of over-abstracted groundwater. The agriculture and food industry is the main water consumer — irrigation alone contributes to about 60 percent of the total water usage in the country. Huge investments have been made to mitigate this imbalance as much as possible and others are in the pipeline or are being planned. Significant improvements are also required from the water demand side in order to move towards a sustainable equilibrium. The main objective of this report is to both indicate ways for Jordan to move away from all unsustainable agricultural and food activities (high water consumers and water inefficient), and suggest paths toward more water efficient and productive solutions.

This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to support the implementation of the strategic development plans of Jordan by analyzing the role of agriculture and farmers in the Jordanian economy, the role that productivity and structural change can play for fostering agricultural growth, and the role agro-processing may play in Jordan’s economic development. We argue that the development of the agro-processing sector often has stronger backward and forward linkages with the agricultural sector than other sectors and, thus, plays an important role for rural transformation.
Book Synopsis Government and the Food Industry: Economic and Political Effects of Conflict and Co-Operation by : L. Tim Wallace
Download or read book Government and the Food Industry: Economic and Political Effects of Conflict and Co-Operation written by L. Tim Wallace and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's purpose is to shed light on the threats and opportunities arising from the incentives and restrictions of governmental actions which food industry managers discover in their search for profits. The food industry, as defined here, includes farmers, their input suppliers, processors and distributors. This text explores how the private sector reacts to the stimulus of public support measures, rules and regulations which are usually motivated by entirely different ends than those desired within the private sector. No current single model of economic behavior as yet adequately encompasses or quantifies these complex vectors and forces. Management is comprised of many factors, most of which can be identified ex post but few of which can be appraised precisely ex ante. The perceptual processes by which managers respond to governments are influenced by culture, aptitudes, individual and collective goals. details of most government/business relationships are discussed Few openly since management and government officials are, understandably, often reluctant to share the decision tree route by which trust is built and understandings are negotiated. Our text differs from others in that we combine both a theoretical and experiential approach to the subject. The insights provided by the case study material give a more macro and yet realistic view than tha t usually offered elsewhere. We indicate the risks and dynamics of the situations faced by management while also showing the importance and strategic relevance of a solid analytical foundation for managerial purposes.

Book Synopsis Market Dynamics and Productivity in Developing Countries by : Khalid Sekkat
Download or read book Market Dynamics and Productivity in Developing Countries written by Khalid Sekkat and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2010 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what degree are trade liberalization, productivity, and economic growth correlated? Can economic policies designed to encourage competition and curtail industry protection result in large-scale improvements, such as increased innovation and reduced unemployment? After 20 years of economic reform in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), economic performance is still lagging behind many regions of the world. Even in those countries that are the most advanced in implementing reforms, including Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia, industries with low productivity growth and high market power continue to dominate. Moreover, the termination of the Multi-Fiber Agreement and the negotiations concerning further liberalization of trade in agricultural products (under the framework of the World Trade Organization) put these and other countries under pressure of fierce competition from emerging nations. Recent empirical evidence on the impact of reforms in a number of developing countries shows that such persistence of inefficiency and market power is specific to MENA. Showcasing in-depth analyses from Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey (with comparative data from Asia and Latin America), this book focuses on the dynamics of firm entry and exit to help explain the low productivity of the region. The results suggest a number of policy recommendations designed to foster competition, which, in turn, would contribute to innovation, productivity growth, and improved return on capital investments. The book not only reveals important correlations among policy and market factors in MENA, but suggests fruitful areas of research in other developing regions of the world.
