Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important aspect of the Joan Miró Foundation’s collections is without doubt its valuable stock of works consisting in over 14,000 items. Most of this collection was donated to the Foundation by Joan Miró himself. Other pieces have come from the collections owned by Pilar Juncosa, the artist’s wife, and Joan Prats, his close friend and the driving force behind the idea of setting up the Foundation. The Foundation has a large collection of paintings from all the different periods of Miró’s life. The works exhibited show the development of his art from his training in Barcelona and first contacts with the avant-gardes in the early twentieth century, the time spent in Paris and his links with the Surrealists. Miró’s art in the last years of his life was mainly expressed in large-format paintings and denotes a deeper interest in pure colour and in gesture, but without abandoning his lyricism and compositional rigour. It is precisely this period that is most widely represented here, since he donated to the Foundation the works that were in his studio when it was set up. This guidebook is the main tool to achieve to the highlights of the Foundation’s collections.

Book excerpt: "In a career spanning over six decades, the New York art dealer Pierre Matisse (1900-1989) contributed substantially to the advancement of modern art. At his eponymous gallery on East Fifty-seventh Street, he showed several now legendary artists for the first time outside Europe. The collection--paintings, sculpture, and drawings by Balthus, Bonnard, Chagall, Derain, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Magritte, and the dealer's own father, Henri Matisse, among others--was donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004 by the foundation established by his widow. These extraordinary artworks are presented with informative entries addressing the circumstances of each work's creation and the dealer's relationship to the artist. In the introduction, the story of Pierre Matisse's early struggles in New York is told for the first time and illustrated with previously unpublished archival photographs."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: The Joan Miró Foundation was the first public institution set up in Barcelona to focus entirely on contemporary art. Joan Miró and Josep Lluís Sert the building’s designer and a founder member of GATCPAC (a leading group in the introduction of modern architecture in Catalonia) first met in 1932 and became close friends while working on the Spanish (Republican) Pavilion at the ParisWorld Fair in 1937. After the first big retrospective of Miró’s work (1968), the artist had decided to set up a building to make his work accessible to the public on a permanent basis. Sert was commissioned and created an open-plan structure in which the interior space communicated with the exterior, producing a perfect balance between architecture and landscape. Since then, the Foundation has been expanded on two occasions. The architect commissioned to carry out this task was Jaume Freixa, a pupil of Sert's who had worked with him for eleven years at Harvard and had played an active part in the creation of the Foundation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By comparing Spanish artist Joan Miro's finished paintings and sculptures with more than 1200 of his sketches and preparatory studies, Gimferrer places Miro's art in a surprising new perspective. Marvelously illustrated with 285 radiant color plates and 1276 in black-and-white, this intensive analysis of Miro's creative process explains how he would first isolate some element from the teeming outside world, then incorporate a graphic sign into it, thus setting in motion a transfigurative process in which objects, signs and symbols underwent a constant metamorphosis. In placing Miro's preliminary drawings alongside the pictures to which they gave rise, Spanish poet and art critic Gimferrer illuminates the inner alchemy by which Miro discovered his major motifs and set them loose in a free-floating pictorial universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Miller (1907-1977) moved to London in the late 1930s, just as a rich strand of Surrealist practice was burgeoning in Britain. Miller was central to its development and prolonged life after World War II, exhibiting alongside British Surrealists such as Eileen Agar and Henry Moore in often overlooked London exhibitions. This book is the first to present Lee Miller's photographs of, and collaborations with key British Surrealists alongside their artworks, to tell the story of this exciting cultural moment. Miller's photographs of noted continental Surrealists such as Max Ernst and E.L.T Mesens, taken while they were working and exhibiting in Britain, also feature alongside their works, documenting their enduring friendships with Miller and her husband, the artist Roland Penrose. Miller's interdisciplinary photographic practice acted as a conduit for the dispersal of Surrealist images out of the realm of fine art and into the worlds of fashion, commercial photography and journalism. A vital study for all students and enthusiasts of Surrealism and those enthralled by the enigmatic Lee Miller, this book reveals the social and cultural networks in which she was embedded, offering a holistic view of her work and the life of the Surrealist movement in Britain. Exhibition: The Hepworth, Wakefield, UK (22.06.-07.10.2018).

Book excerpt: "Joan Miro (1893-1983) was a key figure in twentieth-century art, and one of the most engaging artists of our time. He left behind a remarkable legacy, a body of work that continues to reach an increasingly wide public today. Now, some ten years after his death, and to mark the centenary of his birth, this sumptuously illustrated volume offers new information and insights into Miro's long and extremely productive career." "Author Jacques Dupin has considerably revised and enriched his original far-reaching study of Joan Miro, published by Abrams in 1962. He has taken into account not only the painter's output during the last two decades of his life, but also a great number of documents discovered after his death - projects, sketchbooks, texts, poems, correspondence (to which Dupin had privileged access through his relationship with Miro's family) - as well as studies by art historians and curators that have appeared over the last twenty years." "Far from limiting his analysis to the artist's painting, Dupin has explored the almost infinite universe of Miro's imagination. Thus he surveys the artist's experiments in such diverse fields as sculpture, lithography, book illustration, ceramics, mural painting, and stage and costume design. A passionate creator in the world of the plastic arts, and an equally passionate lover of words, of the most audacious poetical games, Miro was an artist of the subconscious, constantly in pursuit of the dreams which inspired some of his finest canvases." "Nearly 500 illustrations, 200 in full color, reproduce works from every phase of Miro's career. An illustrated chronology, an extensive bibliography, and a list of exhibitions add to the value of this superb volume, an indispensable addition to the literature on modern art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.
