Lifelong best friends and next-door neighbors Hannah and Emory have never gone a single day without talking. But now its senior year and they haven't spoken in three months. Not since the fight, where they each said things they couldn't take back. They're aching to break the silence, but those thirty-six steps between their bedroom windows feel more like thirty-six miles. Then one fateful night, Emory's boyfriend, Luke, almost dies. And Hannah is the one who finds him and saves his life. As Luke tries to make sense of his near-death experience, he secretly turns to Hannah, who becomes his biggest confidante. In Luke, Hannah finds someone she can finally talk to about all the questions she's grappling with. Emory just wants everything to go back to normal -- the way it was before the accident. She has no idea why her relationship is spiraling out of control. But when the horrifying reason behind Hannah and Emory's argument ultimately comes to light, all three of them will be forced work together to protect the one with the biggest secret of all. In the follow-up to her New York Times bestseller, Every Last Word, Tamara Ireland Stone crafts a deeply moving, unforgettable story about love, betrayal, and the power of friendship.

Book excerpt: Footsteps in an abandoned holiday resort as the cold weather settles in; a knock on the door of a hut in the middle of an isolated bog; a lane in Rotterdam perceptible to only one inhabitant in the city. In Cruise of Shadows, Jean Ray began to fully explore the trappings of the ghost story to produce a new brand of horror tale: one that described the lineaments of a universe adjacent to this one, in which objects sweat hatred and fear, and where the individual must face the unknown in utter isolation. First published in 1931, two years after he served his prison sentence for embezzling funds for his literary magazine, Ray's second story collection failed to find the success of his first one, Whiskey Tales, but has emerged over the years as a key publication in the Belgian School of the Strange. It has remained unavailable in its integral form even in French until recently, however, though it contains some of Ray's most anthologized and celebrated stories, including two of his best known, "The Mainz Psalter" and "The Shadowy Alley." This is the book's first English translation, and the second of the volumes of Ray's books to be published by Wakefield Press. Alternately referred to as the "Belgian Poe" and the "Flemish Jack London," Jean Ray(1887-1964) delivered tales of horror under the stylistic influence of his most cherished authors, Charles Dickens and Geoffrey Chaucer. A pivotal figure in what has come to be known as the "Belgian School of the Strange," Ray authored some 6,500 texts in his lifetime.

Book excerpt: In his memoir Was That Me?, a successful businessman, author, and philanthropist provides an inspirational look into the reasons why he chose the road he did in life. After being repeatedly asked the question, How did you go from not attending high school to becoming the man you are today? Bivonas answer was always the same: lots of luck and fate. But soon, that answer did not seem to be enough; and, as Bivona delved into past experiences in order to discover what truly caused him to reach his current destination, he began to identify the influences that propelled him from a childhood in a rundown neighborhood to a stint in the Air Force to his first jobs at Coney Island Amusement Park and a Wall Street stockbrokerage firm. As Bivona relays how he eventually attended Long Island University and became a certified public accountant, it is evident that self-determination and a thirst for knowledge guided him to attain success. The true story of how Michael Bivonas choices in life helped him become who he is today will inspire anyone to examine their own turning points and learn that sometimes opening the door to the unknown is what leads to true happiness.
