Download or read book The Jewel in the Mess written by Alan Abernethy and published by Columba Press (IE). This book was released on 2019 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing from his own experience, Bishop Alan Abernethy examines how his years of leadership in the church caused him to lose sight of the original awe that called him to his faith. In this very personal book, Bishop Abernethy looks at the idea of God without the institutions, hierarchy and bureaucracy, instead refocusing on the figure of Jesus at the heart of the Bible. Through his struggle with mental health and his diagnosis with prostrate cancer, he has come to find the message of Jesus in the difficult, dark and chaotic parts of life. Jesus was born into a world that was messy and uncertain, and did not fix it, but instead blessed the people around him. Using examples of biblical stories and examining the ways in which God shows himself in our ordinary lives, this is a call to bring blessing into the mess of the everyday world. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: 'TRULY INSPIRING' Mail on Sunday Now familiar to millions of Gardeners' World fans as Longmeadow (the home of Nigel & Nellie), this is the story of Monty & Sarah Don's early days there. The Jewel Garden is the story of the garden that bloomed from the muddy fields around the Dons' Tudor farmhouse, a perfect metaphor for the Monty and Sarah's own rise from the ashes of a spectacular commercial failure in the late '80s . At the same time The Jewel Garden is the story of a creative partnership that has weathered the greatest storm, and a testament to the healing powers of the soil. Monty Don has always been candid about the garden's role in helping him to pull back from the abyss of depression; The Jewel Garden elaborates on this much further. Written in an optimistic, autobiographical vein, Monty and Sarah's story is truly an exploration of what it means to be a gardener.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deity Inari has been worshipped in Japan since at least the early eighth century and today is a revered presence in such varied venues as Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, factories, theaters, private households, restaurants, beauty shops, and rice fields. Although at first glance and to its many devotees Inari worship may seem to be a unified phenomenon, it is in fact exceedingly multiple, noncodified, and noncentralized. No single regulating institution, dogma, scripture, or myth centers the practice. In this exceptionally insightful study, the author explores the worship of Inari in the context of homogeneity and diversity in Japan. The shape-shifting fox and the wish-fulfilling jewel, the main symbols of Inari, serve as interpretive metaphors to describe the simultaneously shared yet infinitely diverse meanings that cluster around the deity. That such diversity exists without the apparent knowledge of Inari worshippers is explained by the use of several communicative strategies that minimize the exchange of substantive information. Shared generalized meanings (tatemae) are articulated while private meanings and complexities (honne) are left unspoken. The appearance of unity is reinforced by a set of symbols representing fertility, change, and growth in ways that can be interpreted and understood by many individuals of various ages and occupations. The Fox and the Jewel describes the rich complexity of Inari worship in contemporary Japan. It explores questions of institutional and popular power in religion, demonstrates the ways people make religious figures personally meaningful, and documents the kinds of communicative styles that preserve the appearance of homogeneity in the face of astonishing factionalism.
Book Synopsis The Jewel in the Crown by : Paul Scott
Download or read book The Jewel in the Crown written by Paul Scott and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first novel in the epic quartet about the last days of British rule in India, “as much a story of romantic love as it is of crime . . . an artful triumph” (The New Yorker). The Jewel in the Crown is the first of Paul Scott’s renowned historical novels that “limn the Anglo-Indian world with its lovers, friends, family servants, soldiers, businessmen, murderers and suicides—all involved in one another’s fate” (The New York Times). It opens in 1942 as the British fear both Japanese invasion and Indian demands for independence. On the night after the Indian Congress Party votes to support Gandhi, riots break out and an ambitious police sergeant arrests a young Indian for the alleged rape of the woman they both love. “What has always astonished me about The Raj Quartet is its sense of sophisticated and total control of its gigantic scenario and highly varied characters . . . The politics are handled with an expertise that intrigues and never bores, and are always seen in terms of individuals.” —New Republic “Paul Scott’s vision is both precise and painterly.” —The New York Times Book Review “Few people have written about India quite as seductively, or as intelligently, with a sense of loss but also a sense of responsibility and fallibility.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
