Book Synopsis The Now-A-Days Fairy Book - Illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith by : Anna Alice Chapin
Download or read book The Now-A-Days Fairy Book - Illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith written by Anna Alice Chapin and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Anna Alice Chapin (1880 – 1920), the Now A Days Fairy Book contains such classic stories as: the Brothers Grimm’s ‘Snow White’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, Charles Perrault’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’, alongside Mme D’Aulnoy’s ‘The Three Bears’ and other less well-known tales such as ‘The Mist Island’ and ‘Fairy Talk.’ All of these wonderful tales are accompanied by colour illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith, and appear in their original translations. Jessie Willcox Smith (1863 – 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American Illustration. She was also a prolific contributor to literary novels and magazines during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most notable was her ongoing relationship with Good Housekeeping, including the long-running ‘Mother Goose’ series. Smith’s style changed drastically through her life. In the beginning of her career she used dark lined borders to delineate brightly coloured objects, and in later works she masterfully softened lines and colours – until they almost disappeared. Presented alongside the text of ‘The ‘Now A Days Fairy Book’, her illustrations further refine and elucidate Chapin’s thoughtfully edited collection. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate a century of children's book illustration! For families, art lovers, and history buffs alike, Leonard S. Marcus's visual history tour of 100 years of children's book illustration gathers in one glorious volume the posters of the annual Children's Book Week! Featuring work from early luminaries such as N. C. Wyeth and Marcia Brown to more contemporary illustrators like David Wiesner, Mary GrandPré, Christian Robinson, and Jillian Tamaki, this beautiful collection showcases the conceptual and iconic images that have defined children's books for generations of young readers. While the posters within these pages are linked in their resounding advocacy for young people's literacy, they are distinguished by the styles and mediums of their creators and by the historical, social, and cultural influences of their times. Renowned historian Leonard S. Marcus traces these developments in the children's book field with incisive descriptions to accompany each poster. Children's Book Week has grown over the past one hundred years from a modest grassroots effort to a full-throttle nationwide annual celebration of literacy and the pleasures of reading. The posters in this book beautifully emphasize Book Week's mission, with slogans such as "Build the Future with Books," "Get Lost in a Book," and "One World, Many Stories."
Book Synopsis The Art of the Literary Poster by : Allison Rudnick
Download or read book The Art of the Literary Poster written by Allison Rudnick and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spurred by innovations in printing technology, the modern poster emerged in the 1890s as a popular form of visual culture in the United States. Created by some of the best-known illustrators and graphic designers of the period—including Will H. Bradley, Florence Lundborg, Edward Penfield, and Ethel Reed—these advertisements for books and high-tone periodicals such as Harper’s and Lippincott’s went beyond the realm of commercial art, incorporating bold, stylized imagery and striking typography. This book, based on the renowned Leonard A. Lauder Collection, explores the craze for literary posters, which became sought after collectibles even in their day. It offers new scholarly perspectives that address the aesthetic sophistication and modernity of the literary poster; the impact of early experiments in the field of advertising psychology; the expanded opportunities for women artists, who played an important role in advancing the so-called poster style; and the printmaking techniques that artists employed in this novel art form. A lively survey of a little-known but highly influential period in graphic design, The Art of the Literary Poster is sure to delight enthusiasts of illustration, advertising, and book arts.
