The Encyclopedia is thoroughly cross-referenced and includes a generous selection of illustrations, maps, charts, and genealogies. It is especially strong in its coverage of economic issues, women, music, religion and literature. This comprehensive work of over 2,400 entries will be of key interest to students and scholars, as well as general readers.

Book excerpt: Saint Dominic has been described by one of his biographers, Guy Bedouelle OP, as ' hidden in the light'. Unlike most other founders of religious orders, he says, we have only three brief letters and almost none of his words preserved.; 'we know nothing of Dominic's life except what we can see through the eyes of his followers or his friends...The fact that our access to St. Dominic is so indirect reveals his discretion and, in a sense, his detachment from himself. This detachment in turn is an eloquent statement of the place he wished to hold within the Church.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful book of meditations on various Christian virtues or charisms as reflected in the lives of nine holy Dominican men and women. Manifesting the special grace and spirit given to St. Dominic, these outsanding lives are shining examples for modern Christians on how to make the Gospel teaching incarnate in today's world. Saints portrayed include Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, Martin de Porres, Fra Angelico, Peter of Verona, Catherine de Ricci and others. Charisms highlighted by each life include prayer, joy, poverty, study, friendship, art and more. The lives of the saints occupy a special place in the history and spirituality of the Catholic Church. The men and women in this book form a comprehensive image of one of the most significant movements in the history of Western Christianity: the Dominican order, whose particular charism emphasizes the sanctification of the intellect and importance tht sacred truth holds in the life of the Christian believer.

Book excerpt: I N beginning this Life of St Dominic it is impossible to ignore the difficulties presented by the undertaking. The founder of a religious order playing a great part in history, the saint has been the object of the extravagance of praise and of criticism alike. His admirers and disciples have not been content with. the infOiomation, sometimes vague or scanty, furnished by thirteenth century writers and in particular by his successor, Jordan of Saxony, and ever since the end of the fourteenth century legend has mingled with history. By Alain de la Roche it was profusely scattered throughout the pages of his biography, his zeal-as pious as ill-advised-only serving to render the life of his hero additionally obscure; Jean de Rechac, in the seventeenth century, in a biography overflowing with the marvellous and marked by an entire absence of criticism, followed in his steps; while on the other hand the enemies of the faith have too often seen in St Dominic the founder of the Inquisition alone, his figure appearing to them in the sinistelo light of the faggots. Thus Llorente displays him at Lagrasse, near Carcassonne, celebrating Mass upon a flattened hillock, "while at the four corners of the platform stakes had been erected and flames were devouring the victims."
