Book Synopsis Slaves and Missionaries by : Mary Turner
Download or read book Slaves and Missionaries written by Mary Turner and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 27 December 1831 a fire on Kensington Estate in St James, Jamaica signalled the start of one of the largest slave revolts in the Caribbean. Its leaders were leaders also in the mission churches and the independent sects, and their followers expected the missionaries to support them in their bid for wage work and free status. The missionaries, however, sent to save souls from sin in the face of planter hostility, were explicitly committed to neutrality on the slavery issue. This book traces the response of all classes in Jamaican society to mission work, focusing in particular on the dynamic interplay between slaves and missionaries. Embraced as fellow sinners, assured of spiritual equality of all before God, their intellectual equality with whites demonstrated in schools and classes, the slaves imbued Christianity with political purpose and questioned why blacks and whites were equal after death but slave and master in life. The slaves transformed the question into action in the political circumstances created by the decade-long campaign for abolition, and in doing so made the missionaries themselves into committed anti-slavery campaigners.

Download or read book Beyond the Legacy of the Missionaries and East Indians written by Jerome Teelucksingh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond the Legacy of the Missionaries and East Indians, Jerome Teelucksingh offers a revisionist perspective of the role of the Presbyterian Church in Trinidad. He is particularly interested in social mobility as regards the Indo-Caribbean diaspora in the era following the First World War. He argues that the Presbyterian Church in the Caribbean was particularly interested in women’s rights. As such, he examines the dynamic between local expertise and Canadian missionary work in such social uplift processes.
Book Synopsis Scotland and the Abolition of Black Slavery, 1756-1838 by : Iain Whyte
Download or read book Scotland and the Abolition of Black Slavery, 1756-1838 written by Iain Whyte and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written about Scottish involvement in slavery, the contribution of Scots to the abolition of black slavery has not yet been sufficiently recognised. This book starts with a Virginian slave seeking his freedom in Scotland in 1756 and ends with the abolition of the apprenticeship scheme in the West Indian colonies in 1838. Contemporary documents and periodicals reveal a groundswell of revulsion to what was described as "e;the horrible traffik in humans"e;. Petitions to Parliament came from remote islands in Shetland as well as from large public meetings in cities. In a land steeped in religion, ministers and church leaders took the lead in giving theological support to the cause of abolition. The contributions of five London Scots who were pivotal to the campaign throughout Britain are set against opposition to abolition from many Scots with commercial interests in the slave trade and the sugar plantations. Missionaries and miners, trades guilds and lawyers all played their parts in challenging slavery. Many of their struggles and frustrations are detailed for the first time in an assessment of the unique contribution made by Scotland and the Scots to the destruction of an institution whose effects are still with us today.
