Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Itinerary of Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela, Vol. 2: Notes and Essays That benjamin was a Jew, is too evident to require any further proof, and if we examine his work with any degree of attention, and compare it with similar productions, we shall be forced to admit, that it could only have been a Merchant, who would be induced to notice with so much accuracy the state of trade in the towns and countries he visited. That commerce was the vocation of our traveller, has been also advanced by Eichhorn and Pardessus, and a glance at the ar ticle 'commerce' Of our index will be found strongly to corroborate this assertion. Some three years earlier he had left his native place-Tudela, on the Ebro in the north of Spain. After passing through the prosperous towns which lie on the Gulf of Lyons, he visited Rome and South Italy. From Otranto he crossed over to Corfu, traversed Greece, and then came to Constantinople, of which he gives an interesting account. Very telling, for example, are the words: "They hire from amongst all nations warriors called Barbarians to fight with the Sultan of the Seljuks; for the natives are not warlike, but are as women who have no strength to fight." After visiting the Islands of the Aegean, as well as Rhodes and Cyprus, he passed on to Antioch, and followed the well-known southern route skirting the Mediterranean, visiting the important cities along the coast, all of which were then in the hands of the Franks. Having regard to the strained relations between the Christians and Saracens, and to the fights and forays of the Latin knights, we can understand that Benjamin had to follow a very circuitous way to enable him to visit all the places of note in Palestine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sumerians, the pragmatic and gifted people who preceded the Semites in the land first known as Sumer and later as Babylonia, created what was probably the first high civilization in the history of man, spanning the fifth to the second millenniums B.C. This book is an unparalleled compendium of what is known about them. Professor Kramer communicates his enthusiasm for his subject as he outlines the history of the Sumerian civilization and describes their cities, religion, literature, education, scientific achievements, social structure, and psychology. Finally, he considers the legacy of Sumer to the ancient and modern world. "There are few scholars in the world qualified to write such a book, and certainly Kramer is one of them. . . . One of the most valuable features of this book is the quantity of texts and fragments which are published for the first time in a form available to the general reader. For the layman the book provides a readable and up-to-date introduction to a most fascinating culture. For the specialist it presents a synthesis with which he may not agree but from which he will nonetheless derive stimulation."—American Journal of Archaeology "An uncontested authority on the civilization of Sumer, Professor Kramer writes with grace and urbanity."—Library Journal

Book excerpt: Volume 5 examines the history of Judaism in the Islamic World from the rise of Islam in the early sixth century to the expulsion of Jews from Spain at the end of the fifteenth. This period witnessed radical transformations both within the Jewish community itself and in the broader contexts in which the Jews found themselves. The rise of Islam had a decisive influence on Jews and Judaism as the conditions of daily life and elite culture shifted throughout the Islamicate world. Islamic conquest and expansion affected the shape of the Jewish community as the center of gravity shifted west to the North African communities, and long-distance trading opportunities led to the establishment of trading diasporas and flourishing communities as far east as India. By the end of our period, many of the communities on the 'other' side of the Mediterranean had come into their own—while many of the Jewish communities in the Islamicate world had retreated from their high-water mark.

Book excerpt: When The Hope of Israel was translated into English in 1652, its argument from Scripture that messianic redemption would not come to the Jewish people until they were scattered in all the corners of the Earth aroused great interest and played an instrumental part in the discussions in the Commonwealth under Cromwell which eventually led to the readmission of the Jews in 1656. This edition of that English text includes an introduction and notes which place the work in the intellectual context of its time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Persian and Islamic conquests of Jerusalem in 614CE and 638CE in light of of previous attempts at Jewish restoration. It looks closely at the Persian-Jewish and subsequent Arab-Jewish alliances, and the role of the Exilarch. Using contemporary sources, it works to reconstruct the history of Nehemiah ben Hushiel, his brother Shallum (Salman Farsi) and nephews Heman (Abdullah ibn Salam) and Yakub (Ka'b Al-Ahbar), who played pivotal roles in these conquests working with the early Muslims. This book is for those who wish to view history through the eyes of those who actually lived it, and who understand that those involved in these pivotal events viewed them from profoundly different perspectives. Revisiting both the tensions and cooperation between emerging Muslim and longstanding communities at the time of Muhammad (pbuh) may hold the key to rapprochement today. It is possible that the future of Islamic- Jewish relations lies with our past.
