Book excerpt: This book brings together thirteen of the leading historians of the period to investigate the political, social and cultural significance of the Irish Act of Union. Marking the bicentenary of the passage of the act, the contributors combine to provide an authoritative account of the state of the historical debate. Divided in four sections, the book investigates the origins of the act, its actual passage into legislation, the political debate which surrounded the act in Ireland and beyond, and the central role played by religious considerations in its final shaping. This book provides the results of recent research into the passing of the Union, and supplies the reader with an indispensable starting-point for understanding the significance of the 1801 union of Ireland with Britain.

Download or read book Poynings' Law and the Making of Law in Ireland, 1660-1800 written by James Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poynings' Law (1494) was one of the most crucial statutes ever enacted by the Irish parliament, yet the law's crucial impact on parliament's operations from 1660 has never been examined systematically. James Kelly examines how Poynings' Law impacted on the legislative operations of the Irish parliament between the Restoration and the Act of Union, and he establishes how the Irish parliament contrived, first, by evolving a sophisticated heads of bills process in the late 17th century, second, by curtailing the power of the Irish privy council in the early 18th century, and finally, by securing the amendment of Poynings' Law in 1782, to achieve a degree of legislative independence that endured until the Act of Union. Based on a close and detailed scrutiny of the records of the Irish parliament and the systematic exploration for the first time of the voluminous records of the British privy council, this book provides a new, revealing perspective on the working of the Irish parliament, its relationship with the Irish executive and on the nature of the Anglo-Irish connection. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fascinating look at the debates surrounding the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland. Dillon argues that the Parliamentary Oaths required by the Act are unjust and unconstitutional, and that they undermine the democratic principles of the Irish people. His insightful analysis is a must-read for anyone interested in British-Irish relations and the history of democracy in Europe. Book Synopsis Acts of Union and Disunion by : Linda Colley
Download or read book Acts of Union and Disunion written by Linda Colley and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Kingdom; Great Britain; the British Isles; the Home Nations: such a wealth of different names implies uncertainty and contention - and an ability to invent and adjust. In a year that sees a Scottish referendum on independence, Linda Colley analyses some of the forces that have unified Britain in the past. She examines the mythology of Britishness, and how far - and why - it has faded. She discusses the Acts of Union with Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and their limitations, while scrutinizing England's own fractures. And she demonstrates how the UK has been shaped by movement: of British people to other countries and continents, and of people, ideas and influences arriving from elsewhere. As acts of union and disunion again become increasingly relevant to our daily lives and politics, Colley considers how - if at all - the pieces might be put together anew, and what this might mean. Based on a 15-part BBC Radio 4 series.

Download or read book Ireland written by Oliver MacDonagh and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oliver MacDonagh described the first edition of "Ireland: The Union and its Aftermath", published in 1968, as "a very small book with very large themes". The book rapidly reached the status of a classic and remains a thought-provoking survey of the history of Ireland from the Act of Union of 1800 until modern times. It has been unavailable for a long time. MacDonagh regarded the Act of Union as the most important single factor in shaping Ireland as a nation in the modern world. Although subordination to Britain had influenced Irish development before 1800, it took a rapidly different form under the Act of Union: "The experience of being assimilated by, and resisting assimilation into, a powerful and alien empire - perhaps the master-culture of the 19th century - was truly traumatic." For the second edition, published in 1977, which is reprinted here with a new introduction by W. J. Mc Cormack, MacDonagh included a chapter on the period 1968-73, taking account of the early years of the troubles in Northern Ireland.
