Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, liver resections and liver transplantations were performed by different surgical teams, with very little interplay between the two. However, the evolution toward more complex operations called for an increasingly intense interaction between these surgical techniques: split liver and living donor liver transplantation have become popular in the transplant community, utilizing the Coinaud segmental anatomy in a very sophisticated way, while portal and arterial resection and reconstruction have become indispensable methods for treating Klatskin tumors infiltrating the hepatic hilum. This book offers a complete overview of the connections between liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. It focuses on ex situ techniques for resection of tumors at the suprahepatic confluence, with or without venous reconstruction, and on total vascular exclusion of the liver with the aid of a venovenous bypass that should be a surgical option for referral centers in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. By taking into consideration the development of minimally invasive liver surgery, it will introduce readers to a variety of new perspectives such as: vascular exclusion techniques with or without extracorporeal circulation, hemodynamic implications and lessons learned from liver transplant surgery, and technical details on pediatric transplantation and its informative role in modern biliary tract surgery.

This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical site infections are caused by bacteria that get in through incisions made during surgery. They threaten the lives of millions of patients each year and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. In low- and middle-income countries, 11% of patients who undergo surgery are infected in the process. In Africa, up to 20% of women who have a caesarean section contract a wound infection, compromising their own health and their ability to care for their babies. But surgical site infections are not just a problem for poor countries. In the United States, they contribute to patients spending more than 400 000 extra days in hospital at a cost of an additional US $10 billion per year. No international evidence-based guidelines had previously been available before WHO launched its global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection on 3 November 2016, and there are inconsistencies in the interpretation of evidence and recommendations in existing national guidelines. These new WHO guidelines are valid for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to offer an exhaustive overview of the recent insights into the state-of-the-art in most performed arthroplasties of large joints of lower extremities. The treatment options in degenerative joint disease have evolved very quickly. Many surgical procedures are quite different today than they were only five years ago. In an effort to be comprehensive, this book addresses hip arthroplasty with special emphasis on evolving minimally invasive surgical techniques. Some challenging topics in hip arthroplasty are covered in an additional section. Particular attention is given to different designs of knee endoprostheses and soft tissue balance. Special situations in knee arthroplasty are covered in a special section. Recent advances in computer technology created the possibility for the routine use of navigation in knee arthroplasty and this remarkable success is covered in depth as well. Each chapter includes current philosophies, techniques, and an extensive review of the literature.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is one of the key enablers of modern business. The ever expanding availability of digital information, however, brings with it the challenge of handling this information appropriately. While related challenges now appear in our daily lives, this is even more the case along supply chains, where a multitude of actors is involved. This doctoral thesis addresses the topic by linking theoretical rigor with practical relevance. By assessing the current state of research in supply chain management represented in literature reviews, a range of under-represented areas of research as well as potential future research directions in the field of supply chain management are identified. Focusing on one selected exemplary under-represented area of research, the thesis takes the digital business transformation perspective, portraying the value and role of digital information in a business function context. As research on the intersection of Big Data Analytics and supply chain management is still scarce, the conceptual work offers first insights into an emerging topic, both on the internal operations level and on the supply chain level. This is beneficial from a scientific as well as a managerial perspective, as a thorough understanding of the constituents of a digital ecosystem is a key ingredient for the competitiveness and overall productivity of the company and ultimately of the supply chain as a whole.
