This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this research is the area of CSR and corporations’ increasing attention towards legitimising their existence within civil society. Reporting on CSR becomes increasingly important, not only in international business, but also as a corporate tool to actively legitimise existence. CSR increasingly institutionalises the form of management guidelines and frameworks as well as via NGOs. This research focuses on German and British corporations’ construction and professionalisation of CSR strategies and how corporations perceive legitimacy. This study additionally includes insights into institutional differences of CSR and corporations’ legitimacy strategies by comparing two different forms of capitalisms. This dissertation met these two main research aims through an extensive literature review, focussing particularly on legitimacy. In addition, template analysis of ten German and ten British corporations as well as critical discourse analysis was carried out. This dissertation produced a number of key findings. Firstly, the recent academic body of literature confirms an increasing institutionalisation of CSR. Secondly, this research diagnoses a corporation-led process of achieving legitimacy. Thirdly, despite national differences corporations seek acceptance and anchor their own responsibility strategies within frameworks of guiding institutions, which function as a ‘legitimacy tool’. The main conclusions drawn from this research were: that current approaches to explaining corporations’ legitimacy are insufficient because they focus solely on an external perspective, not accounting for internally established CSR initiatives to legitimise, and furthermore inconsiderate of corporations’ increasing independency. This research argues for an extended approach, which additionally considers corporations two-way approach to legitimise as well as an active management of legitimisation as an expression of new corporate governance. Appendix 4 "CSR reports, Discourse Material and Results of TA and CDA" is not included!
Book Synopsis Corporate Social Responsibility in Europe by : Regine Barth
Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility in Europe written by Regine Barth and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acid test of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is simply this: does it lead to positive impacts on society and the environment or is it just rhetoric? And if it does lead to positive impacts, how can these be enhanced? This timely book tackles this cutting-edge challenge by presenting empirical findings from a range of surveys and in-depth case studies. These build on a new methodological and theoretical framework for assessing and explaining the sustainability impact of CSR. For selected sustainability issues mitigation of climate change and chemical risk, resource management in marine fisheries, promotion of gender equality and countering of bribery and within different European industries, the authors show that the rhetoric of CSR is still stronger than its reality. They do so by investigating into CSR practices which encompass the creation of a vision on CSR, its strategic and operative implementation and its organisational and cultural embedding within companies and their supply chains. The authors conclude that the reality of CSR is strong enough to allow for some rhetoric. They name intra- and extra-company success factors for, and limits of, producing sustainability impacts through CSR. Finally, they discuss its contribution to achieving public policy goals and the governance paradigms that are necessary to make CSR effective. The volume successfully combines a business and public policy perspective, based on an interdisciplinary approach. This book will be invaluable for both students and researchers interested in the effects of CSR, and will prove a useful tool for policy-makers and CSR practitioners alike.
Book Synopsis Corporate Social Responsibility - A Comparative Analysis of Germany and the USA by : Corinna Sinzig
Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility - A Comparative Analysis of Germany and the USA written by Corinna Sinzig and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (Management), course: Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility - An International Comparison, language: English, abstract: Nowadays the power and impact of big organizations has reached a new peak. Corporations are among the world's most powerful and dominant institutions. In some cases they are even surpassing the revenue-producing ability of small governments. In contrast to this economic success, globally acting companies are often accused of social and ecological misbehavior. Nevertheless, revealed affairs like the Nike-case have increased the awareness of customers, governmental organizations, trade unions and other stakeholders. For this reason during the past decades, the construct of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gained growing attention, in both political and academic ways. While the image of socially contributing companies, acting beyond their legal duties and obligations, has a longer and more intensive history in the Anglo-Saxon countries and particularly in the United States, the concept is less implemented in central Europe. This is often explained by the fact that in these states many environmental and social responsibilities of companies are defined by laws, which are optional in Anglo-Saxon countries. These cross-national differences shall be outlined and critically analyzed within this paper, by comparing the CSR practices of Germany and the USA. Furthermore the question shall be answered to which extend the institutional background of corporations can shape their behavior and finally lead to a high or weak adoption of corporate social practices.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Governance in Hybrid Organizations by : Linne Marie Lauesen
Download or read book Sustainable Governance in Hybrid Organizations written by Linne Marie Lauesen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sustainable Governance in Hybrid Organizations the author Linne Marie Lauesen explores how businesses that have succeeded in conducting sustainable governance, manage and govern their sustainable performance: in other words, how they manage to be economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. In this respect, hybrid organizations that are formed as businesses with a mission to be sustainable and to provide services for society - such as water companies - are a good point of departure. Water companies are highly regulated whilst working primarily for the betterment of society and on behalf of generations to come, for whom clean and plentiful water and the preservation of nature is a must. Linne Marie has dug deep into these types of hybrid organizations in order to reveal which mechanisms of organizational governance for sustainability are at play, and how these organizations manage to balance their triple bottom lines in order to survive financially, socially, and environmentally and make a business out of their conduct. Balancing these three bottom lines in a sustainable way is explained in a clear and accessible way and the juxtaposition between non-profit and for-profit water companies will show how this model can be transferred to other business spheres.

And yet, skepticism often prevails, as CSR is often associated with traditional philanthropic practices enabling companies to greenwash their unethical social and environmental practices. This book offers a fresh view on today's CSR from both historical and geographical perspectives. Exploring its roots and theoretical developments in the US, the author then focuses on how CSR has spread across the world, first in Europe and later in the developing world. An updated overview of today's CSR agenda is provided with a focus on four key issues: stakeholder inclusion, employee engagement and social dialogue, human rights and environmental sustainability. With the support of multiple cases and examples taken from various continents and industries, the book adopts a sustainability-driven perspective, based on the belief that the future of CSR lies in the strategic embeddeness of key issues into the company's value chain. Finally, the book attempts to draw the contours of tomorrow's CSR by proposing a new terminology reflecting the current evolution of CSR.
