Within a section of 35 counties in the State, which has been intensively surveyed each year, the average number of borers per 100 plants more than doubled from lu.9 in 1938 to 3m.1 in 1939, and again increased in about the same proportion, from 3m.l in 1939 to 77.m in 19mo. Significantincreases from 1939 to 19m0 took place in 26 of the 35 counties surveyed in the 2 years, and the population trend in 8 other counties was in the direction of an increase.
