Book Synopsis The Transmission of Sin by : Pier Franco Beatrice
Download or read book The Transmission of Sin written by Pier Franco Beatrice and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in Italian in 1978, The Transmission of Sin is a study of the origins of the doctrine of original sin, one of the most important teachings of the Catholic Church. While the doctrine has a basis in biblical sources, it found its classic expression in the work of St. Augustine. Yet Augustine did not work out his theory on the basis of the biblical texts alone, rather he sought to understand them in the context of the religious thinking of his own time. Pier Franco Beatrice's work seeks to illuminate that context, and discover the post-biblical influences on Augustine's thought. Although he made considerable efforts to defend and elaborate the doctrine of hereditary guilt, says Beatrice, the doctrine already existed before Augustine and was in fact widespread in the Christianity of the time, particularly in the West. He locates its origins in Egypt in the second half of the second century CE, in Jewish-Christian circles that saw sexual congress as the source of the physical and moral corruption that afflicts all humans. In reaction to this extreme view, which rejected marriage and procreation as inherently evil, other theologians developed a more moderate position, recognizing only personal sin, which could not be inherited. Beatrice argues that Augustine's doctrine exemplified a synthesis of these two trends which would ultimately triumph as the orthodox Catholic position.
Book Synopsis Original Sin in Augustine's Confessions by : Paul Rigby
Download or read book Original Sin in Augustine's Confessions written by Paul Rigby and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The idea of original sin owes its development more to Augustine than to any other individual. We cannot understand this idea, much less believe it, unless we consider his primary motive for developing it. His 'Confessions', a masterpiece of personal reflection, reveals the psychological dynamic that renders a free person's implication in social and historical evil irreversible from the beginning. The author traces this interior bondage of the will through Augustine's own life from his infancy and youth, through his dramatic conversion, to his mature years of reflection and ministry as bishop. It presents original sin not only autobiographically, but also historically, as the first and universal sin of mankind, and primordially, as the fundamental cause and meaning at the root of all moral impotence and sin. This volume argues that the doctrine of original sin stands together with the doctrine of grace as the foundation of Augustine's teachings on confession and salvation; it rejects a recent development in Augustine studies that reduces Augustine's doctrine of original sin to an ancillary, polemical role as a weapon in the arsenal against Pelagian voluntarism. Above all, it allows this doctrine to live now as it did for Augustine, by permitting us to observe as he reflects theologically upon his personal experience of God." [Book jacket].

Book Synopsis Augustine of Hippo and Martin Luther on Original Sin and Justification of the Sinner by : Jairzinho Lopes Pereira

This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pereira demonstrates how Augustine came to break with the patristic soteriology and anthropological theology and adopted the radicalism of grace with which he faced the theologians associated with the fifth-century Pelagianis. It was precisely that radicalism of grace that made of Augustine Luther's favourite theologian. The same radicalism was adopted by Luther in his opposition to the recentiores doctores, the Nominalist theologians. Without overlooking the crucial role played by the Pauline corpus, the author says that Augustine's anti-Pelagian thesis were at the core of the young Luther's soteriological and anthropological claims and were the driving force behind Luther's cry for reformation.

Book Synopsis Augustine's Early Thought on the Redemptive Function of Divine Judgement by : Bart van Egmond
Download or read book Augustine's Early Thought on the Redemptive Function of Divine Judgement written by Bart van Egmond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's Early Thought on the Redemptive Function of Divine Judgement considers the relationship between Augustine's account of God's judgment and his theology of grace in his early works. How does God use his law and the penal consequences of its transgression in the service of his grace, both personally and through his 'agents' on earth? Augustine reflected on this question from different perspectives. As a teacher and bishop, he thought about the nature of discipline and punishment in the education of his pupils, brothers, and congregants. As a polemicist against the Manichaeans and as a biblical expositor, he had to grapple with issues regarding God's relationship to evil in the world, the violence God displays in the Old Testament, and in the death of his own Son. Furthermore, Augustine meditated on the way God's judgment and grace related in his own life, both before and after his conversion. Bart van Egmond follows the development of Augustine's early thought on judgment and grace from the Cassiacum writings to the Confessions. The argument is contextualized both against the background of the earlier Christian tradition of reflection on the providential function of divine chastisement, and the tradition of psychagogy that Augustine inherited from a variety of rhetorical and philosophical sources. This study expertly contributes to the ongoing scholarly discussion on the development of Augustine's doctrine of grace, and to the conversation on the theological roots of his justification of coercion against the Donatists.
