Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of prior warm rolling on AISI 52100 bearing steel in the hardened condition. Microstructural and mechanical properties of both standard and warm rolled 52100 were investigated. heat treatments, consisting of both conventional hardening treatments and isothermal transformation treatments, were conducted prior to fracture toughness, hardness, and tensile testing. Conventional hardening treatments resulted in martensitic structures with low toughness; prior warm rolling resulted in the rolled materials exhibiting both higher hardness and toughness than the standard 52100 in the hardened condition. Isothermal transformation treatments resulted in substantially improved toughness, especially in the material processed at 300 C. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of thermomechanical processing and subsequent conventional heat treatment on microstructure and fatigue in AISI 52100 steel. The thermomechanical processing techniques are essentially those described by Sherby and his co-workers at Stanford University. Previous research by that group and at the Naval Postgraduate School has demonstrated that a wide range of ferrite matrix grain sizes and carbide particle distributions can be obtained in this steel. Studies parallel with this are examining the subsequent heat treatment response of these structures and also the fracture toughness attainable. In this study on fatigue, it was found that both the fatigue life at a given cyclic stress and the endurance limit were improved by processing to produce an ultra-fine grained ferrite-carbide microstructure prior to heat treatment. Improvement in fatigue resistance was especially pronounced when the material was heat treated to fine Bainitic, rather than Martensitic microstructures. These improvements are postulated to result from changes in crack propagation mode and improved resistance to fatigue crack propagation. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing-microstructure-property relationships in steels continue to present challenges to researchers because of the complexity of phase transformation reactions and the wide spectrum of microstructures and properties achievable. This major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels and its implications for the emergence of new steels with enhanced engineering properties. Volume 1 reviews fundamentals and diffusion-controlled phase transformations. After a historical overview, chapters in part one discuss fundamental principles of thermodynamics, diffusion and kinetics as well as phase boundary interfaces. Chapters in part two go on to consider ferrite formation, proeutectoid ferrite and cementite transformations, pearlite formation and massive austenite-ferrite phase transformations. Part three discusses the mechanisms of bainite transformations, including carbide-containing and carbide-free bainite. The final part of the book considers additional driving forces for transformation including nucleation and growth during austenite-to-ferrite phase transformations, dynamic strain-induced ferrite transformations (DIST) as well as the effects of magnetic fields and heating rates. With its distinguished editors and distinguished international team of contributors, the two volumes of Phase transformations in steels is a standard reference for all those researching the properties of steel and developing new steels in such areas as automotive engineering, oil and gas and energy production. Discusses the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, diffusion and kinetics Considers various transformations, including ferrite formation, proeutectoid ferrite and cementite transformations Considers additional driving forces for transformation including nucleation and growth during austenite-to-ferrite phase transformations

Book excerpt: Using precracked Charpy tests supplemented by center-notched tensile tests, the fracture toughness of five low-alloy and three stainless steel high-strength alloys in sheet form was measured primarily as a function of heat treatment variables such as austenitizing and tempering temperatures. The low alloy steels studied were D6AC (two heats)4340 (martensitic and bainitic conditions), X200 (0.35 and 0.40% carbon), 300M and H11; and the stainless steels were AM 355, PH 15-7Mo and 301. For 4340, in the bainitic condition, the influence of subsequent deformation and aging on fracture toughness was also determined. In addition, preliminary studies of the effect of welding both before and after heat treatment on the toughness of H11, 300M and 4340 were carried out. (Author).
