Book excerpt: Purpose: Association and dissociation are psychological strategies used to shift the attentional focus of exercisers to help attain their fitness goals. Association strategies, like verbal feedback, help to emphasize movements and performance while dissociation strategies, like listening to music, help to distract individuals from unwanted feelings and increase enjoyment during exercise. These methods have been shown to be effective strategies to enhance the experience in land-based activities, such as running and cycling. However, association and dissociation strategies have not been fully examined in swimming. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if these attentional focus strategies can be used to improve performance in swimming maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) tests. Methods: Ten mixed-experience swimmers (6 women, 4 men; 21.6 ℗ł 3.7 years old) performed three different VO2max tests in a swim flume on one day. The tests consisted of listening to music, receiving verbal feedback, or no music or verbal feedback while swimming. The participants completed an attentional focus questionnaire after each trial to assess how frequently they had thoughts in the following categories - active self-regulation, internal sensory monitoring, outward monitoring, or distraction thoughts. Results: The participants had distraction thoughts more frequently in the music condition compared to both verbal feedback (p = 0.019) and control conditions (p = 0.019), and there were no differences among trials for active self-regulation (p = 0.410), internal sensory monitoring (p = 0.528), and outward monitoring (p = 0.258) thoughts. There was no difference in VO2max (p = 0.161) and heart rate (p = 0.847) among the three conditions, although the respiratory exchange ratio was higher in the control compared to the music trial (p = 0.036). Conclusions: Results from this study showed listening to music was an effective dissociation strategy in swimming. Future studies should compare competitive and recreational swimmers as they have different mindsets and may respond differently to music and verbal feedback relative to the mixed-experience group in the present study.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine the influence of a musical intervention on state anxiety, as measured by the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (Martens, Burton, Vealey, Bump, & Smith, 1990), and race time over three testing occasions of adolescent swimmers. Participants were 33 male and female swimmers from a local club team. Athletes were assigned to either an Excitative, Sedative, or No Music condition based on their answer to a question on the demographic questionnaire. Participants in the music conditions listened to a 30 min selection of music before completing the CSAI-2 (Martens et al., 1990) approximately 30 min before a race. A 3 x 3 ANOVA with one repeated factor (time of assessment) and one independent groups factor (music condition) was computed to compare state anxiety cores and race times. No significant interactions were found between music and state anxiety or race times; however, a significant main effect was found for Somatic State Anxiety with regard to testing occasion. Somatic anxiety increased from the first to the second swim meet, and decreased from the second to the third swim meet. Thus, music did not appear to influence state anxiety or race times among adolescent swimmers.

Book excerpt: Music is one of the most universal ways of expression and communication in human life and is present in the everyday lives of people of all ages and from all cultures around the world. Music represents an enjoyable activity in and of itself, but its influence goes beyond simple amusement. Listening to music, singing, playing, composing and improvising, individually and collectively, are common activities for many people: these activities not only allow the expression of personal inner states and feelings, but also can bring many positive effects to those who engage in them. There is an increasing wealth of literature concerning the wider benefits of musical activity, and research in the sciences associated with music suggests that there are many dimensions of human life (physical, social, psychological—including cognitive and emotional) which can be affected positively by music. The impact that musical activity has on human life can be found in different processes, including a transfer of learning from the musical to another cognitive domain. Abilities that have been developed through music education and training may also be effectively applied in other cognitive tasks. Engagement in successful music activity may also have a positive impact on social skills and social inclusion, thus supporting the participation of the individual in collective and collaborative musical events. The promotion of social participation through music can foster many kinds of inclusion, including intercultural, intergenerational, and support for those who are differently abled. The aim of this Research Topic is to present a diverse range of original articles that investigate and discuss, in different ways, the crucial role that musical activity can play in human development and well-being.
