Book excerpt: In this book, Barrett Beer presents a scholarly edition of Sir John Hayward's Life and Raigne of King Edward VI, the earliest biography of the last Tudor king. Originally published in 1630 and again in 1636, Hayward's account was reprinted in White Kennett's Complete History of England in 1706. Beer uses the printed editions and unpublished manuscripts to produce a complete text of Hayward's book. Book Synopsis The Reputation of Edward II, 1305-1697 by : Kit Heyam

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime and the four centuries following his death, King Edward II (1307-1327) acquired a reputation for having engaged in sexual and romantic relationships with his male favourites, and having been murdered by penetration with a red-hot spit. This book provides the first account of how this reputation developed, providing new insights into the processes and priorities that shaped narratives of sexual transgression in medieval and early modern England. In doing so, it analyses the changing vocabulary of sexual transgression in English, Latin and French; the conditions that created space for sympathetic depictions of same-sex love; and the use of medieval history in early modern political polemic. It also focuses, in particular, on the cultural impact of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II (c.1591-92). Through such close readings of poetry and drama, alongside chronicle accounts and political pamphlets, it demonstrates that Edward's medieval and early modern afterlife was significantly shaped by the influence of literary texts and techniques. A 'literary transformation' of historiographical methodology is, it argues, an apposite response to the factors that shaped medieval and early modern narratives of the past.

Book Synopsis The Influence of King Edward VI (1547-1553) on English Ecclesiastical History by : Donald Carl Bracco

This book was released on 1968 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward VI presents a far more formidable and less pathetic figure than most historians have indicated. The role he played in the Protestant Reformation in England has been greatly underestimated. It was the purpose of this paper to examine and re-evaluate the influence of Edward VI on religious developments during his reign, 1547-1553. Research for this paper had indicated a substantial involvement by Edward in religious innovations. His role in the development of a new Protestant liturgy was significant. He provided for the introduction of the English language into church services. He authorized the publication of books attacking the papacy. His order for the establishment of a uniform order of service resulted in the famous Book of Common Prayer of 1549. Edward also engineered the settlement of the year-long vestment controversy. The second Book of Common Prayer, which established the new Protestant doctrine, reflected Edward's earlier recommendations and was personally revised by Edward six months after it had been authorized by parliament. Edward ordered the establishment of a new catechism, new canon laws, and uniform articles of religion. A new catechism and The Articles of Religion were published in the spring of 1553. A new book of canon law was drawn up, but Edward's death in July prevented its authorization.
Book Synopsis Edward III: The Perfect King by : Ian Mortimer
Download or read book Edward III: The Perfect King written by Ian Mortimer and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2014-02-22 with total page 999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the brutal, brilliant fourteenth-century ruler, by the bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England. Holding power for over fifty years starting in 1327, Edward III was one of England’s most influential kings—and one who shaped the course of English history. Revered as one of the country’s most illustrious leaders for centuries, he was also a usurper and a warmonger who ordered his uncle beheaded. A brutal man, to be sure, but a brilliant one. Noted historian Ian Mortimer offers the first comprehensive look at the life of Edward III. The Perfect King was often the instigator of his own drama, but he also overthrew tyrannous guardians as a teenager and ushered in a period of chivalric ideals. Mortimer traces how Edward’s reforms made feudal England a thriving, sophisticated country and one of Europe’s major military powers. Ideal for anyone fascinated by medieval history, this lively book provides new insight into Edward III’s lasting influence on the justice system, artistic traditions, language, and architecture of the country. “The most remarkable medieval historian of our time.” —The Times (London)
Download or read book Power and Place written by Simon Heffer and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not used to thinking of King Edward VII as a political figure. In popular historical memory he is a playboy, womaniser, gambler, sybarite. Yet in Simon Heffer's view it is time we took him more seriously. That first decade of the twentieth century proved to be far more than a golden epilogue to the reign of Queen Victoria. It was a crucial turning point when the remnants of feudalism and hereditary power that had survived Victoria's sixty years on the throne finally yielded to power that had been democratically elected. To say that Victoria was the last unconstitutional monarch and Edward the first constitutional one is simplistic. As Heffer recounts, during his reign Edward fought constant battles with ministers, notably at the Foreign Office, War Office and Admiralty. He was absorbed in the most bitter constitutional crisis of the twentieth century -- the fight between the Lords and the Commons about the retention of the Upper House's veto on legislation. Edward's influence was enormous. As Heffer points out, the extent of his power and authority can be measured by the speed with which, after his death, great changes were made to the prerogative powers of the throne. Power and Place: The Political Consequences of King Edward VII is a major reconsideration of a monarch whose achievements in twentieth century political and diplomatic history have too often been ignored. - Jacket flap.

Book Synopsis Edward VIII, The British King who renounced the throne for his love by : Natasha Tristan
Download or read book Edward VIII, The British King who renounced the throne for his love written by Natasha Tristan and published by UB Tech. This book was released on with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, it’s a vicious circle. When one gets to that magical world, goes automatic. In monarchies, everything is generally conquests and subjugation, isn’t it? Otherwise, there is everything that goes on in an atmosphere of peace. But Edward VIII, the Crown Prince who voluntarily abdicated power in 1936, was entirely different from all others. Although he had not shown much interest in governance, he became an official unexpectedly after the death of his father, George V, and retired within a year and began his life’s journey in search of worldly pleasures. He was rich with other talents. This book clearly shows the influence of his girlfriend on the resignation of Edward VIII. Generally lovers have a lust for power. They edited it. In the aftermath of World War, their relationship continued unabated. Wallis Simpson, an American controversy and socialite, is the heroine who conquered Edward’s mind. This gives an idea of the revolutionary changes that took place in Britain at the time due to the intervention of these two. A fresh dawn of a new awakening can be seen in Britain.
Book Synopsis A Great and Terrible King by : Marc Morris
Download or read book A Great and Terrible King written by Marc Morris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major biography of a truly formidable king, whose reign was one of the most dramatic and important of the entire Middle Ages, leading to war and conquest on an unprecedented scale. Edward I is familiar to millions as "Longshanks," conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace (in "Braveheart"). Yet that story forms only the final chapter of the king's action-packed life. Earlier, Edward had defeated and killed Simon de Montfort in battle; traveled to the Holy Land; conquered Wales, extinguishing its native rulers and constructing a magnificent chain of castles. He raised the greatest armies of the Middle Ages and summoned the largest parliaments; notoriously, he expelled all the Jews from his kingdom. The longest-lived of England's medieval kings, Edward fathered fifteen children with his first wife, Eleanor of Castile and, after her death, erected the Eleanor Crosses—the grandest funeral monuments ever fashioned for an English monarch. In this book, Marc Morris examines afresh the forces that drove Edward throughout his relentless career: his character, his Christian faith, and his sense of England's destiny—a sense shaped largely by the tales of the legendary King Arthur. Morris also explores the competing reasons that led Edward's opponents (including Robert Bruce) to resist him. The result is a sweeping story, immaculately researched yet compellingly told, and a vivid picture of medieval Britain at the moment when its future was decided.
