Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infancy of Religion IN this little book there are presented some results of a study of religion in its most primitive and rudimentary forms. I was drawn to the subject by the curiosity to know whether religion could legitimately be called an instinct of human nature. Is it as much of the essence of man as, for example, the gift of speech Or is it some thing that he acquired in the course of his history, as he learned the art of making a boat to carry him across a river? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Line Upon Line: Or a Second Series of the Earliest Religious Instruction the Infant Mind Is Capable of Receiving MY dear children - I know that you have heard that God made the world. Could a man have made the world? No; a man could not make such a world as this. Men can make some things, such as boxes and baskets. Perhaps you know a man who can make a box. Suppose you were to shut him up in a room, which was quite empty, and you were to say to him, You shall come out when you have made a box, -would the man ever come out? No never. A man could not make a box, except he had something to make it of. He must have some wood, or some tin, or some pasteboard, or some other thing. But God had nothing to make the world of. He only spoke, and it was made. Making things of nothing is called creating. No one can create anything but God. Do you know why God is called the Creator? It is because he created all things. There is only one Creator. Angels cannot create things, nor can men. They could not create one drop of water, or one little fly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Religion For the use of parables as a means of conveying religious truth we have sufficient authority, and few people will question the value of the story method of instruction, but the days have gone by when children honestly enjoyed moralizing, if indeed they ever did. Much must be left to the teacher's tact and good sense in the handling of the following stories, for, as a famous educator has said, it spoils the fairy pudding to pull out the moral plums. On the other hand, the point of the lesson should always be made definite and clear by questions and discussion pertinent to the subject. Hence each story is followed by a few questions designed to stimmate the child's own thought and expression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity The studies and discourses that are herein ofiered to the public deal with some general conditions of Christian life in the first three centuries of our era. Though already printed, at intervals and amid the pressure of grave academic duties, it is hoped that a certain unity of doctrine, purpose, and interest will not be found wanting to their collection as a series. In one way or another they illustrate certain phases and circumstances of those wonderful centuries before Constantine the Great, when the constitution and the institutions of the new religious society were de veloping on all sides within the vast Empire of Rome. The teachings of Jesus Christ were the pure, sweet leaven that permeated the decaying and unhappy society of antiquity, saved from its mass of corruption some germs of goodness and truth, of beauty and justice, and strengthened the State against those shocks that would otherwise have reduced it to pri maeval barbarism. A perennial charm must therefore attach to any narrative of the problems and vicissi tudes of this era. This is particularly true of the sufferings of the infant churches, and the social changes their rapid growth could not fail to work in the Roman society that seemed to contain them, but of which. The doctrine on which it is founded, namely, that faith in Christ (like the Chris tian life upon the whole) admits of gradual progress from less to more perfect develop ment - may almost be said to be unknown to the science of Theology. If, however, this doctrine is not found in a definite and systematic form in the ordinary systems of doctrinal Christianity, it appears to be uni formly recognised by every writer of any authority, as one which enters essentially into the teaching of Holy Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Childhood and Character: An Introduction to the Study of the Religious Life of Children Tms book is an effort to introduce teachers to the study of childhood religion at first hand. Its aim is increase not so much of information as of insight, by thoughtful observation and control of children. It is in no sense a substitute for boys and girls as objects of study, and it should be used as a way of learning rather than as something to be learned a guide to the real facts, which are living children, not books. For some time there has been a widely felt need for a book that will unite the study of children with the study of society. The social point of view in religion, in psychology, in attitude toward youth, has not so far given birth to a text for the guidance of teachers. Most current text-books are too abstract, too general, too little interested in problems of religious development, too individualistic in their point of view, or too crowded with facts of lesser importance. They leave the stu dent with an idea of the dissected body and mind of the child, but without a notion of children living in the fellowship of a social whole which includes them as well as adults. Young and old together constitute society. The youthful ingredient of society in the religious aspect of its development is the subject of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings of Faith and Science NE of the most pleasant reminiscences of my life is that wherever I have lived and labored I have had the confidence and good will of the young people Of the church and community. And this has not come to me as a precious heritage by reason of making too great con cessions, but by taking a deep interest in their future. Six years of my public life have been ardently devoted to collegiate work, and I have had before me hundreds of young men and women, and I have looked into their bright faces with the profoundest hopes for their future. And this interest in them does not lessen with the length ening years. And knowing that there are thousands Of them full of native ability and ambition who can never spend time in college halls, and yet by making diligent use of the helps prepared for their hands may rise to fair prominence and great usefulness. It is mainly these students, in and out of school, I have had specially in mind while preparing these pages. Their student life should begin by securing at least a few grains of truth from him who is the Radium Light of the world. All moral and scientific torches should come to this light for illumination. I regard any person's life as dangerous ly problematical who will purposely leave out Of his life plan a sincere acceptance Of Jesus Christ as his moral teacher and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the Doctrine of Infant Salvation The task which we set before us in this brief paper is not to unravel the history of Opinion as to the salvation of infants dying in infancy, but the much more circumscribed one Of tracing the development of doctrine on this subject. We hope to show that there has been a doctrine as to the salvation of infants common to all ages of the Chur'ch but that there has also been in this, as in other doctrines, a progressive correction Of crudities in its conception, by which the true meaning and relations Of the common teaching have been freed from deforming accretions and its permanent core brought to purer expression.
