Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the nineteenth century the English were beginning to enjoy the fruits of their colonial empire. Military strategy and the political considerations, along with pressure from their intelligentsia for the safety of their colonial empire, and of course geographical expediencies forced the English authorities in the later half of the nineteenth century to begin seriously to collect information, both geographical and of general nature, about the vast terra incognita that was there all along the land frontiers of India since the prehistoric age. These were the regions where the English could travel in those days only at the risk to their lives. Strategically, they opted for sending the natives of the border region who were accustomed to frequent Tibet, Turkestan and the adjacent regions since early historical period for trade and religious pilgrimages. With the creation of the Establishment for Trans-Himalayan Exploration in 15 May 1863, and trained with elementary survey instruments the explorers began to systematically infiltrate in the northern regions in various disguises. The present work is mostly based on their diaries' and reports' submitted to the Survey department. Part I describes the beauty of the rugged country including its geographical and geological growth in much detail for the first time. The social, economic, cultural and religious activities of life in Tibet are very diligently described by the Indian explorers in Part II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A translation of a popular Buddhist work on worldly ethics by Tibet's most famous philosopher. Leadership. Power. Responsibility. From Sun Tzu to Plato to Machiavelli, sages east and west have advised kings and rulers on how to lead. Their motivations and techniques have varied, but one thing they all have had in common is that their advice has been as relevant to the millions who have read their works as it has been to the few kings and princes they were, on the surface, addressed to. The nineteenth-century Buddhist monk and luminary Jamgön Mipham’s letter to the king of Dergé, whose small kingdom straddled China and Tibet during a particularly turbulent period, is similar in the universality of its message. This work, however, is unique in that it stresses compassion, impartiality, self-control, and virtue as essential for long-lasting success—whether as a leader or an individual trying to live a meaningful life. Mipham’s historic contribution to ethics and governance, until now little studied outside of Buddhist circles, teaches us the importance of protecting life, fair taxation, environmental sustainability, aiding the poor, and freedom of religion. Both present day leaders and those they lead will find this classic work, finally available in English, profoundly illuminating on political, societal, and personal levels.

Book excerpt: The creative and controversial Tibetan intellectual Amdo Gendun Chophel (1903-1951) composed his guide to India during the 1930's while visiting many of the ancient sites of Indian Buddhism, which had only recently been the object of archaeological rediscovery and modern religious revival. His work offered traditionally minded pilgrims from the remote Tibetan highlands clear instructions on the correct identification of authentic Buddhist sites, as well as unique practical guide for using the Indian rail system. The Guide to India is one of the first works of Modern Tibetan Literature and was to become the most used manual contemporary Tibetan pilgrimage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tibetan Tales, Derived From Indian Sources: Translated From the Tibetan of the Kah-Gyur In an Appendix to his "Buddhism in Tibet," Dr. Emil Schlagintweit has given "An alphabetical list of the books and memoirs connected with Buddhism." Although not completely exhaustive, it occupies thirty-five pages, and contains references to more than a hundred separate works, and a much larger number of essays and other literary articles. Of those books and articles, the titles of about sixty allude to Tibet. To them may be referred readers who wish for detailed information about that country, its literature, and its religion. All that it is proposed to do here is to say a few words about the Tibetan work from which have been extracted the tales contained in the present volume; to give a short account of the enthusiastic Hungarian scholar, Csoma Korosi, who had so much to do with making that work known to Europe; and to call attention to any features which the stories now before us may have in common with European folk-tales. To do more, without merely repeating what has been already said, would require a rare amount of special knowledge; and it may safely be asserted that remarks about Buddhism, made by writers who do not possess such knowledge, are seldom of signal value. The tales contained in the sacred books of Tibet, it may be as well to remark at the outset, appear to have little that is specially Tibetan about them except their language. The Conservation Department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna presents this volume largely based on papers reported at the conference "Cultural Heritage Counts - Research, Conservation and Management" held in New Delhi in August, 2009. The conference was a crucial contribution initiated by the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi to celebrate this important jubilee. The successful and intensive cooperation of both countries in the fields of the research and conservation of cultural heritage is reflected in numerous research and conservation projects presented in this book.
