But the professors of these branches in the bygone times were all practical statesmen and financiers, whose greatness is too well established by now not to admit that they acted most frequently by the rule of thumb methods, leaving little room for the broad and well-conceived generalisation science. (1) In Great Britain it appears to be a spirit of "unrest" and "discontent." Now and again, one sees in the London and Provincial newspapers, the ugly words "Sedition in India." (2) In India, the problem is one that daily presses upon the millions of its people, the problem of making two ends meet; of the food supplies for the ever growing population, and wherewithal to buy the needs of life? Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there is a cause for "unrest" and "discontent," but it is Economical and not Political. A great solution lies, in my opinion, as I will attempt to show in this pamphlet, in the development of the produce of land, and in freeing the cultivator from the harassment and hardship of the present system of cash fixed payment, according to a periodical or any kind of assessment. Before proceeding to outline my scheme in somewhat greater detail, I will here just say that from the knowledge of my own countrymen, I firmly believe that a revision of the Government of India's Land Revenue Policy in some accordance with my proposed solution of the problem will speedily lead to a development of land produce which will tend to alleviate, if not terminate, the "unrest" and "discontent," the evidences of dissatisfaction with the outward conditions of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard of Value In reality a very important issue was involved in it, namely, whether the Standard Of Value Of the world should in the future be Gold alone, or whether it Should be formed Of a combination Of Silver and Gold as it had been in the past. I was employed in the Financial Department Of the Government Of India when the divergence in the relative value Of Gold and Silver began to declare itself and, as the fall in the Indian Exchange had a serious effect on the finances Of the Government Of India, the subject forced itself on my attention. In 1886 I published a work called the Theory Of Bimetallism, and I was a Member Of the Royal Commission on Gold and Silver which sat from 1886 to 1888. I was subsequently Finance Member Of the Council Of the Governor - General Of India, and took part in the measures for the introduction Of the Gold Standard into India. I was afterwards a Member Of the Committee which recommended that the gold value Of the Indian rupee Should be fixed at 18. 4d. Although Bimetallism is no longer a live question, other problems connected with the Standard Of Value will arise in the future, and I have decided to place on record the conclusions at which I arrived as the result Of my experience and study Of the subject, and also to state the circumstances under which it was decided to introduce the Gold Standard into India and explain the procedure adopted for that purpose. I cannot hope to give the trained Economist fresh light on questions with which he is already familiar, but what I have to say may be Of some assistance to the man Of business who may be forced by circumstances, as I was, to give his attention to the subject. I feel that some apology is needed for the length Of my remarks on the subject Of the Quantity Theory Of Money and the Relation between Credit and Prices, but at the time Of the Bimetallic Controversy the questions connected therewith had not been SO thoroughly investigated as they have lately been, by Professor Irving Fisher, and other Economists, and the applicability of the Quantity Theory Of Money to modern conditions was denied, while, as it seemed to me, wholly untenable theories were put forward regarding the relation between Credit and Prices. It is for this reason that I have felt bound to Offer certain remarks in defence Of a theory which, rightly understood, ought never to have been challenged. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

This book, reporting on twenty empirical studies of Indian society conducted by outstanding scholars, reflects these trends not only with reference to Indian society itself, but also in terms of the relevance of such trends to an understanding of social change more generally.The contributors demonstrate the adaptive changes experienced by the studied groups in particular villages, towns, cities, and regions. The authors view the basic social units of joint family, caste, and village not as structural isolates, but as intimately connected with one another and with other social units through social and cultural networks of various kinds that incorporate the social units into the complex structure of Indian civilization. Within this broadened conception of social structure, these studies trace the changing relations of politics, economics, law, and language to the caste system.Showing that the caste system is dynamic, with upward and downward mobility characterizing it from pre-British times to the present, the studies suggest that the modernizing forces which entered the system since independence--parliamentary democracy, universal suffrage, land reforms, modern education, urbanization, and industrial technology--provided new opportunities and paths to upward mobility, but did not radically alter the system. The chapters in this book show that the study of Indian society reveals novel forms of social structure change. They introduce methods and theories that may well encourage social scientists to extend the study of change in Indian society to the study of change in other areas.

Book excerpt: In 1902 The Gramophone Company in London sent out recording experts on "expeditions" across the world to record voices from different cultures and backgrounds. All over India, it was women who embraced the challenge of overcoming numerous social taboos and aesthetic handicaps that came along with this nascent technology. Women who took the plunge and recorded largely belonged to the courtesan community, called tawaifs and devadasis, in North and South India, respectively. Recording brought with it great fame, brand recognition, freedom from exploitative patrons, and monetary benefits to the women singers. They were to become pioneers of the music industry in the Indian sub-continent. However, despite the pioneering role played by these women, their stories have largely been forgotten. Contemporaneous with the courtesan women adapting to recording technology was the anti-nautch campaign that sought to abolish these women from the performing space and brand them as common prostitutes. A vigorous renaissance and arts revival movement followed, leading to the creation of a new classical paradigm in both North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) classical music. This resulted in the standardization, universalization, and institutionalization of Indian classical music. This newly created classical paradigm impacted future recordings of The Gramophone Company in terms of a shift in genres and styles. Vikram Sampath sheds light on the role and impact of The Gramophone Company’s early recording expeditions on Indian classical music by examining the phenomenon through a sociocultural, historical and musical lens. The book features the indefatigable stories of the women and their experiences in adapting to recording technology.
