Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Increase of Faith The following work treats of the infancy, growth, and maturity of Christian Faith. The doctrine on which it is founded, namely, that faith in Christ (like the Chris tian life upon the whole) admits of gradual progress from less to more perfect develop ment - may almost be said to be unknown to the science of Theology. If, however, this doctrine is not found in a definite and systematic form in the ordinary systems of doctrinal Christianity, it appears to be uni formly recognised by every writer of any authority, as one which enters essentially into the teaching of Holy Scripture. And when we join with the apostles in this prayer, we have taken the first steps towards the ih crease of our faith. But God usually answers such prayers through some channels or laws of our being. The answer cannot be passed over to us as coins from one hand to another. No falling mantle, nor wave of prophet hand, can: answer such prayers. Like wisdom or skill, or learning, which cannot be given by teacher to scholar, however much some parents expect it of them, they must be wrought into our na ture through certain natural laws or methods; Let us consider, then, some of the ways in which God increases our faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith Strengthened MY religious zeal was aroused, on finding that the name of the Supreme Being was dishonoured, and our Holy Law profaned, by the very people who had been ap pointed to be the guardians of faith and the witnesses of those grand truths which make the simple man wise, the sorrowing heart glad, and the dim eyes bright. To my grief, I found that the inquisitive and indefatigable study of religion, which yields due reward to its zealous followers, was not cultivated among us as in former days, and am persuaded that ignorance and growing misapprehensions have added mental to physical burdens. Persecutions arising from religious hatred were heaped upon the children of my faith in all quarters of the globe, and were ever increasing in acrimony, not less in consequence of the low state of knowledge possessed by the Jews in matters of theological controversy than by the confused and mistaken notions which Christians had formed of Judaism. But it is absolutely imperative on man to be at all times prepared to repel any attack made on his belief. In conformity with this observation. Book Synopsis The Theology of Faith (Classic Reprint) by : P. P. M'Kenna
Download or read book The Theology of Faith (Classic Reprint) written by P. P. M'Kenna and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Faith If the elements which go to make up Divine faith are overlooked by the persons who discuss this question or write upon it, errors most fatal and disastrous are certain to appear, and those errors will, in many cases, be so far-reaching in their effects as ultimately to lead to the complete overthrow of all revealed religion. We have, therefore, devoted the opening chapter of the treatise to an explanation of the virtue of faith, its supernatural character, and its influence on the faculty in which it inheres. We have tried to explain how it is acquired, and the various ways in which it may be lost, and also suggested to the reader some of the differences which exist between it and the moral virtues. In referring to the nature and causes of faith we are reminded that the Vatican Council (cap. 3, De Fide) teaches that faith is a supernatural virtue by which, under the inspiration and help of God's grace, we believe that those things which were revealed by Him are true, not be cause their intrinsic truth is perceived by the natural light of reason, but on account of the authority of God who reveals them and who can neither deceive nor be deceived; that to secure a reasonable assent to faith God has willed that the external arguments for revelation shouldbe joined to the internal assistance of the Holy Spirit; and that those external arguments are, in the first place, mlracles and prophecy which, since they go to demonstrate God's omnipotence and infinite knowledge, are unquestionable Signs of Divine revelation and are also suited to the intellectual capacities of all. In trying to explain the nature of faith we have treated of it in its relation to the human faculties, and especially in its relation to the reason and will (cc. Ii. And God does not ask us to accept faith blindly. On the contrary He wishes us to make use of our reason, as a preliminary to faith. The Apostles appealed to the reason of the unbelieving multitudes, and St. Paul often did so with great effect; yet, in alluding to his share in the work, the Apostle thus wrote: I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase (1 Cor. Iii. God alone can give men faith, although, by appealing to the reasonableness of Christian faith, the preacher tries to remove the difficulties and prejudices against its acceptance. Hence the necessity of having the reason and will well ordered as a preparation for faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith Any volumes have been written M upon the subject of these lectures, and it would be a very pleasant task and by no means a difficult one to gather to gether and sum up Opinions old and new upon their main thesis, the relation between faith and authority. The present volume, however, does not offer this to its readers. It brings with it a few old problems under whatever new light may come from the experience of a long ministry. For thirty years the writer has been watching the play of religious truth upon the minds of men, and his reading of theological results has been revised in the light of innumer able experiences. In this way he trusts that he may be able to present formal questions at least from some new angles of vision and in some new groupings.
