Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circadian Rhythms and the Human covers the basic principles behind the human circadian rhythms. This book is composed of 12 chapters that discuss the detection, analysis, and definition of rhythms, specifically exogenous and endogenous rhythms. This book also demonstrates the mechanism of metabolic and gastrointestinal rhythms. The opening chapters deal with the rhythms in living organism; establishing the endogeneity of rhythms; definition of nychthemeral rhythm; methods of measuring the frequency of rhythms; exogenous effects upon the temperature rhythm; interaction between exogenous and endogenous influences; and possible origins of renal rhythmicity. The succeeding chapters consider the effect of exercise at different times of day and the concept of sleep-wakefulness rhythm. The discussion then shifts to the effects of repeated time-zone transitions and the effects of time on drug administration. The closing chapters are devoted to the assessment of work performance during shift work. The book can provide useful information to doctors, students, researchers, and the general reader.

Book excerpt: Popular science at its most exciting: the breaking new world of chronobiology - understanding the rhythm of life in humans and all plants and animals. The entire natural world is full of rhythms. The early bird catches the worm -and migrates to an internal calendar. Dormice hibernate away the winter. Plants open and close their flowers at the same hour each day. Bees search out nectar-rich flowers day after day. There are cicadas that can breed for only two weeks every 17 years. And in humans: why are people who work anti-social shifts more illness prone and die younger? What is jet-lag and can anything help? Why do teenagers refuse to get up in the morning, and are the rest of us really 'larks' or 'owls'? Why are most people born (and die) between 3am-5am? And should patients be given medicines (and operations) at set times of day, because the body reacts so differently in the morning, evening and at night? The answers lie in our biological clocks the mechanisms which give order to all living things. They impose a structure that enables us to change our behaviour in relation to the time of day, month or year. They are reset at sunrise and sunset each day to link astronomical time with an organism's internal time.

Book excerpt: Contrary to the common view that cultural modernism is a broadly anti-mimetic movement, one which turned away from traditional artistic goals of representing the world, Rhythmic Modernism argues that rhythm and mimesis are central to modernist aesthetics. Through detailed close readings of non-fiction and short stories, Helen Rydstrand shows that textual rhythms comprised the substance of modernist mimesis. Rhythmic Modernism demonstrates how many modernist writers, such as D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf, were profoundly invested in mimicking a substratum of existence that was conceived as rhythmic, each displaying a fascination with rhythm, both as a formal device and as a vital, protean concept that helped to make sense of the complex modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Chapters 11 to 14) summarise important features of the biological clock at the level of whole animal covering all vertebrate classes (fish to mammal). Chapters 15 and 16 are on long term (seasonal) rhythms in plants and higher vertebrates. Short term rhythms (ultradian rhythms), the significance of having a clock system in animals living in extreme (arctic) environments, and the diversity of circadian responses to melatonin, the key endocrine element involved in regulation of biological rhythms, have been discussed in Chapters 17 to 19. Finally, a chapter on sensitivity to light of the photoperiodic clock is added which, using vertebrate examples, illustrates the importance of wavelength and intensity of light on circadian and non-circadian functions. A well-known expert writes each chapter. When presenting information, the text provides consistent thematic coverage and feeling for the methods of investigation. Reference citation within the body of the text adequately reflects the literature as subject is developed. A chapter begins with an abstract that enables a reader to know at the first glance the important points covered in that chapter. The chapter concludes with a full citation of references included in the text, which could be useful for further reading. The book ends with a comprehensive subject index that may be useful for quick searches.

Book excerpt: In The Rhythmic Movement Method, author Dr. Harald Blomberg explains why rhythmic movement is more useful than drugs in treating ADHD and many other disorders. Based on the spontaneous rhythmic movements of infants, these actions are necessary for the development of the brain, motor abilities, emotions, and mental faculties. He introduces his method-rhythmic movement training-and describes how simple healing exercises stimulate the ability of the brain and the nervous system to renew itself and create new connections. Blomberg shares how these exercises help people develop and mature or heal physically, emotionally, and mentally. With case studies included, The Rhythmic Movement Method helps children with ADHD and adults suffering from depression, psychosis, Parkinson's disease, and other disorders to feel well, function better, and stop taking medications.

Book excerpt: Although in the past the Swedish anatomical schools gave one of the first impulses to the study of biorhythms, this subject has never been a favourite matter of mor phological investigations. The proposal of the organizing committee at the 8th Inter national Anatomical Congress to organize a symposium on rhythmic research was willingly accepted. It was felt that as morphology is growing to be more and more an experimental discipline, biorhythms should be considered. It is gratefully acknowledged that investigators with great experience in biologic rhythms were prepared to take part in this symposium. Their different fields of research, physiology, biology, embryology and clinical, indicate the importance of rhythmic variations and mathematicians show how results gained have to be treated in a correct statistical fashion. There are the processes of cell multiplication, regeneration and growth, which have been proved to be rhythmic. The analyses of mitoses show to what extent such strong interventions as adrenalectomy, hypophysectomy etc. have been misinterpreted and delivered severally contradictory results when the rhythmic variations are not considered. The observation of tissues collected throughout 24 hours contributes to the much debated problem of "Amitosis" and also revealed a definite rhythm of DNA. In connection with this is the uptake and incorporation of DNA-precursors which occur rhythmically. In the vast number of precursor experiments which frequently vary strongly in their results, circadian changes have hardly been considered until now.
