Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Agricultural Implements, Vol. 1 of 2: A Review of Invention and Development in the Agricultural Implement Industry of the United States The year of the World's Columbian Exposition is a most advantageous time for issuing, in book form, a review of the development of the agricultural implement industry in America. To our improved methods in agriculture, more than to any other factor, excepting railroads, we owe the marvellous development of our resources during the past century, and a full share of the credit should be given to the inventors, beginning with Whitney just 100 years ago, who gave their lives, often in martyrdom, to the development of inventions, whose object was to make labor more effective in man's struggle with Mother Earth. If we had none of our modem implements of planting, cultivation, harvesting and separation, Europe would look in vain to our shores for bread and clothing for her congested population, and the millions of our own cities would be to-day an ignorant peasantry. Empires in the past arose and fell and their places were utterly forgotten, save to the scribe or philosopher, for the masses - men, women and children were so enslaved to the soil that they were helpless, after their masters had slain each other in war or gone the way of dissipation. But in this nineteenth century man has been shaking off the shackles of manual toil, and has secured advantages of education and intercourse with his fellowmen that lay a firm foundation for the future and insure against a relapse, in America, at least, into another slough of ignorance and helplessness. It is fitting that, in our celebration of the achievement of Columbus in the discovery of America, we should also remember the inventors who by power of mind over matter have freed their fellowmen. To these, whom the historian of the future all call truly great, this brief review of their work is dedicated. The author acknowledges with gratitude the kindness of C. W. Marsh, editor of the Farm Implement News in authorizing the revision and use of his able historical articles published a few years ago. Mr. Marsh is well qualified to speak with authority in matters pertaining to the agricultural implement industry, as he was the inventor of the harvester, a machine which represents to-day more capital invested in its manufacture and use than any other single machine in the world, excepting the steam engine; and since retiring from its manufacture has been actively engaged for nearly ten years in editorial work that has kept him closely informed regarding the progress of every branch of the industry. It is to be regretted that Mr. Marsh could not have taken up this work, but editorial duties have pressed him too closely, and it has devolved upon the writer, who has undertaken it in the hope that four years' connection with Mr. Marsh's paper, nearly three years of that time as editorial assistant, has in some measure fitted him for the task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Agriculture, Vol. 2 of 2 Tull, indeed, must ever be regarded as one of the earliest improvers of English agricultural implements his plougbs, bis horse-hoes, and his ingenious attempts to construct a drill machine evince a spirit of inquiry, and an advance in agri cultural mechanics, which betoken at once his ability and his enthusiasm. He was far indeed before the general agricultural knowledge of his age; and if he did now and then sufl'er his enthusiasm to carry him too far in his conclusions, yet the very efl'ert to improve in bands like his was sure to be attended with a measure of good success, for his exertions not only produced immediate good fruits, but they widely diflused a very general and well-founded suspicion that the implements of that age were not quite so perfect as they might be made. This led to considerable improvements, and prepared the way for still more ln portant efl'orts by the next generation of implement makers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plough-Wright's Assistant: Or, a Practical Treatise on Various Implements Employed in Agriculture Thus, the construction of those implements, so va lnable, so necessary, and even indispensable to man kind, seems to have been left to persons, most of whom have been ignorant both of their principles and mode of Operation; and though the plough has always held the chief place among the implements of agriculture, yet this valuable machine has been gene rally constructed almost at random, or by guess; few, till of late years, having any fixed plan or pro per rule whereby to Operate. Hence, the forms of ploughs came to be nearly as various, as were the per sons by whom they happened to be constructed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Farm Implements and Machines I 71 Steam Cultivation - Mr William Smith of Woolstone, Bucks Mr John Allin Williams of Balyden, Wilts and Mr P. A. Halkett of Merton Road, Wandsworth, London. These gentlemen, by a large expenditure of time and money, have done much tos the solu tion of the question of economical steam-cultivation. The inven tions of Mr Smith and Mr Williams depend for their action on a system of traction by ropes, pulleys, and windlasses, after the man ner, more or less modified, employed by Mr Fowler, whose plan we have fully described. Mr Halkett's plan involves arrangements of decided novelty, inasmuch as he prepares the land to be cultivated for the operation of the implements employed, by laying down tram or guide ways, by which he proposes to insure a precision of Opera tion otherwise unattainable. Of machines or implements adapted to steam-cultivation, to be dragged over the land either by the direct power of a portable steam-engine fitted with Boydell's Endless Railway, or by the windlass-and-pulley system of Fowler, and cognate plans, we may here notice the Cultivator, with revolving tines, of Mr Bernard Samuelson of Banbury, and the Eleven-tined Cultivator of Mr Richard Coleman of Chelmsford. Of recent patents connected with steam cultivation now attracting attention, mention may be made of those of Mr A. Dacre Lacy, of Hall House, Knayton, near Thirsk, York shire; of Mr Thomas Keddy, of Handsforth, Stafford; of Mr T. Ricketts, of Castle Foundry, Buckingham and of Messrs Howard and Baker, Bedford. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture of the United States in 1860: Compiled From the Original Returns of the Eighth Census, Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Interior Br the foregoing table it will be perceived that, in 1860, the agricultural area Of the country embraced acres of improved land, and acres of Land Unimproved. In other words, for every two acres of improved land there are three acres of land connected therewith not yet under cultivation; while the gross aggregate of uncultivated territory, fertile and waste, swells to acres. This fact gives color to the agriculture of the country. Land is abundant and cheap, while labor is scarce and dear. Even in the older-settled States there is much land that can be purchased at extremely low rates; and, by a recent act of Congress known as the Free Homestead law, every citizen of the United States, or any foreigner who shall declare his intention of becoming a citizen, can have a farm of 160 acres without charge. As good land as any in the world is offered to actual settlers on these easy terms. Under such circumstances it is evident that the intensive system of agriculture which is practiced in some older and more densely populated countries, where labor is abundant and the land mostly under cultivation, cannot, as a general rule, be profitably adopted at present in this country. It has been said that American agriculture is half a century behind that of Great Britain. In one sense this is, perhaps, true. Our land is not as thoroughly under-drained, manured, and cultivated as that of England, Scotland, or Belgium; but we can, and do now, produce a bushel of wheat at much less cost than the most scientific farmer of England can by the best approved method Of cultivation, eren if he paid nothing for the use of his land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Agricultural Society of England It has been thought desirable to add to the series of Memoirs on English Agriculture, a brief account of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, - the institution under whose direction the book was written, and upon whose model the Societe des Agriculteurs de France was framed. Mr. Caird, in his Paper, alludes to the absence of a Ministry of Agriculture from our executive government, and the distribution of certain statistical, sanitary, and judicial functions between the Board of Trade, the Privy Council, and the Inclosure Commission. The other duties which usually devolve upon Ministries of Agriculture, such as stimulating improvement in the various breeds of live stock, in the cultivation of the land, in the education of the agricultural classes, and generally in what has been termed "the propaganda of agriculture" are in England ignored by the Government, and therefore left to the private initiative of individuals or Societies. The Royal Agricultural Society of England is the largest and the most influential of the Societies which have been established in the three kingdoms for the advancement of agriculture. Owing to its national character and the extent of its operations it has obtained the support of a large number of leading landowners and tenant-farmers in England and Wales, besides not a few in Scotland and Ireland, which portions of the United Kingdom also possess their own national Societies. Nearly every county and even many smaller districts in England can also boast of their Agricultural Society, each one having its independent management and its own annual Exhibition, except when the "Royal" comes their way, at which time the county Society generally suspends its Show for the year, and makes a contribution from its funds towards the expenses of the national Exhibition, most frequently in the form of special prizes having a local interest. It need scarcely be added that the Society receives no subsidy from the Government in aid of any of its operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Implements and Farm Machinery: And the Principles of Their Construction and Use; With Simple and Practical Explanations of the Laws of Motion and Force as Applied on the Farm Nothing shows the advancement of modern agriculture in a more striking light than the rapid improvement in farm implements. It has enabled the farmer within the last fifty years to effect several times the work with an equal force of horses and men. Plows turn up the soil deeper, more evenly and perfectly, and with greater ease of draught; hoes and spades have become lighter and more efficient; grain, instead of being beaten out by the slow and laborious work of the flail, is now showered in torrents from the thrashing-machine; horse-rakes aecom plish singly the work of many men using the Old hand rake; horse-forks convey hay to the barn or stack with ease and rapidity; twelve acres Of ripe grain are neatly cut in one day with a two-horse reaper; grain drills and planting machines, avoiding the tiresome drudgery of hand labor, distribute the seed for the future crop with even ness and precision. The owner of a seventy-thousand-acre farm in Illinois carries on nearly all his work by labor-saving machinery. He drives posts by horse - power; breaks his ground with Comstock's rotary spader; mews, rakes, loads, unloads, and stacks his hay by horse-power; cultivates his corn with two-horse, seated or sulky cultivators; ditches low ground, sows and plants by machinery; so that his labor ers ride in the performance of their tasks without exhaust ing their strength with needless walking over extended fields. This Is chiefly due to the great extent of ocean to the south of the continent and the relatively small area of the country, which permits the pre wailing summer winds from the southeast to pass directly to the land from the cold regions of the Atlantic seas. In Cape Town and along the west coast it is colder than on the east coast, because the former part of South Africa 1s swept by the cold Antarctic current, whereas in Durban and on the east coast the temperature is generally much higher because of its being washed by the warm Mozambique current from the Indian Ocean. Further inland the climatic conditions of the coast are largely modified by the great increase in elevation.
