Participants included: African American, Latino/a, Asian, Biracial, Multiracial and White students undergraduate students attending a large predominantly White university in the southeast. Results showed that minority status stress and impostor feelings are significantly related to mental health while racial micro-aggressions are significantly related to physical health and GPA. Impostor feelings were a significant predictor of mental health and racial micro-aggressions were a significant predictor for physical health. African American students were significantly less satisfied with their campus climate and Asian students reported significantly more impostor feelings. The culture of predominantly White universities has a unique impact on the experience and perceptions of ethnic minority students. Implications for working with ethnic minority students regarding mental and physical health concerns on predominantly White campuses are offered.

Book excerpt: The impostor phenomenon is commonly identified by a distinct set of psychological and behavioral symptoms that are grounded in a pervasive sense of fraudulence or intellectual phoniness. Experiences of impostor symptoms are frequently associated in the literature with increased likelihood of simultaneously experiencing symptoms of psychological distress including depression and anxiety. The present study intended to address a gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between symptoms of the impostor phenomenon and specific student demographic variables (student degree program and student enrollment status), psychological distress variables (anxiety, depression, and perceived stress), and student help-seeking behavior in counseling graduate students enrolled in counseling programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The study analyzed responses from 286 counseling graduate students using a hierarchical regression analysis. Results from the study found that student demographic variables and help-seeking behavior did not explain impostor phenomenon scores. However, the psychological distress variables were positively correlated with impostor phenomenon scores and explained 39% of the variance in impostor scores with perceived stress scores having the highest relative importance. Post hoc analyses on help-seeking behaviors found that help-seeking behavior significantly explained anxiety scores, but not scores for depression, stress, or impostor syndrome. Implications are discussed as to how academic programs and faculty can better support counseling graduate students. Considerations for future research and limitations are also provided.

Impostor syndrome has recently become a trending topic for discussing why many feel like a fraud at work or school, even though the construct was conceptualized in the 1970s (Clance & Imes, 1978). Much of the extant research about impostor phenomenon has used undergraduate samples, yet little knowledge exists about how this impostorism functions within the college context. The purpose of this study was to examine how impostor phenomenon operates for undergraduates and how it affects their college experience. Gender schema and social learning theories provided the framework for assessing gender stigma consciousness (GSC), professor approachability, and the controllability of causal attributions for success as predictors of undergraduates’ impostorism, and in turn how these impact their college experience defined as sense of belonging at their university, psychological well-being, and GPA. Path analyses demonstrated GSC positively predicted impostorism, and professor approachability and attribution controllability negatively predicted students’ impostorism. These also showed impostorism negatively impacted students’ well-being and sense of belonging at college. No relationship was found between impostorism and GPA. Further, t-tests and multiple group path analyses demonstrated that the impact of impostorism was similar for men and women undergraduates, but some predictors of impostorism operated differentially by gender. Professor approachability predicted women’s impostorism but not men’s impostor fears. These findings and their implications were discussed within the context of gender differences in attributions and the historical and social context of higher education. One of the most significant implications is that professors’ interactions with students matter, especially for traditionally marginalized students. Inasmuch as future research should aim to expand on these findings, this study is an important first step into investigating how impostorism operates among undergraduates specifically and why ambivalent findings prevail about gender differences in impostorism. The results of this study serve to inform instructors, college administrators, and researchers about the importance of considering the psychological adjustment of students, even those thriving academically, and to address the sources of impostorism on their college campuses.

Book excerpt: In the undergraduate and working environments, some science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) areas remain dominated by males. The purpose of this study was to understand the gendered experience of individuals in STEM majors by assessing students' math self-efficacy, impostorism (a feeling of intellectual phoniness), and future goals. Based on prior research, an overall conceptual model was proposed and analyzed. Several related precursors including gender role orientation, perceived parental influence, math identity, and theories of intelligence were included in the model. Three hundred six undergraduates (64.38% female) in the colleges of natural science, geosciences, and engineering responded to an online survey addressing these constructs. Based on prior research, hypotheses were created proposing that females would report higher impostorism, lower math self-efficacy, and more femininity than males. I expected that masculinity, perceived parental influence, an entity theory of intelligence, and high math identity would predict the impostor phenomenon. Moreover, I hypothesized that the relation of each of these predictors to impostorism would be moderated by sex. For the next two hypotheses, I proposed that the four sources of math self-efficacy would predict math self-efficacy, but this relation would be moderated by impostorism. Finally, I expected that impostorism would lead to reduced future expectations and aspirations, but that this association would be mediated by math self-efficacy. Results indicated partial support of the study hypotheses, and a revised model was created. Both sexes reported similar levels of impostorism, but females had lower math self-efficacy and greater femininity than males. Masculinity negatively predicted the impostor phenomenon, while math identity and an entity theory of intelligence positively related to the dependent variable. Sex moderated the effect of perceived parental influence such that males' impostorism was more affected by parental influence than females'. Emotional arousal was a strong contributor to math self-efficacy, but this relation was attenuated by impostorism. Coping with emotional arousal was positively associated with math self-efficacy; however, this association was significantly stronger for low impostors than high ones. Finally, impostors were less likely to expect to go to graduate school or work in a STEM-related field. Implications for schools and professors are discussed.

For individuals, college retention translates to earning a degree, and for institutions, it translates to maintaining revenue. Many factors put college students at risk for withdrawing from college, including being a student from Appalachia, being considered a first-generation student, and being a student experiencing impostor phenomenon. At the time of this study, there was no research found regarding students who met all three criteria. Through this qualitative study, I sought to identify students who identified as all three factors, understand the prevalence of impostor phenomenon in first-generation college students in Appalachia, gain insight into the experiences of first-generation college students with high levels of impostor phenomenon, and explore factors that led to first-generation students’ persistence in college. Upperclassmen at a university in the Appalachian region completed a questionnaire designed to answer three research questions. Appalachian, first-generation students perceived comparison with peers, minimization of success and external factors such as luck, family obligation, and overwhelm due to school assignments as factors leading to impostor phenomenon. Appalachian, first-generation students were able to persist in light of the feelings of impostor phenomenon by leaning on their support system from home and longing to make them proud, while developing a sense of belonging in college, remembering what they hope to achieve by attending college, using logic to deter negative feelings, and developing effective study habits.

The study was guided by two research questions: 1) Are Latinx students more susceptible to Imposter Phenomenon compared to other ethnicities? 2) Do other demographic factors contribute to feelings of being an imposter? It was hypothesized that Latinx students would have a higher level of IP feelings than non-Latinx students. This study surveyed 254 graduate students enrolled in different graduate programs. The demographic characteristics studied were age, college generation, ethnicity, gender, and graduate program of attendance. The findings showed that there were no statistically significant differences between IP mean scores and age, college generation, ethnicity, and gender. The only statistically significant difference was found when comparing mean IP scores and graduate program of attendance, with participants enrolled in the Psychology (M.A.) program reporting lower IP feelings and participants enrolled in the English (M.A.) program experiencing higher feelings of IP. Additionally, this study found that the majority of graduate students surveyed were experiencing at least moderate feelings of IP. This suggests that further research needs to be done to examine what factors contribute to graduate students experiencing IP feelings. Universities should educate students about IP and create support programs and services to assist graduate students experiencing IP.

One recent survey of postsecondary educators found that nearly 80 percent believed emotional wellbeing is a "very" or "extremely" important factor in student success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent. While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental health problem or having experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance use and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Some are the result of long-festering systemic racism in almost every sphere of American life that are becoming more widely acknowledged throughout society and must, at last, be addressed. Mental Health, Substance Use, and Wellbeing in Higher Education lays out a variety of possible strategies and approaches to meet increasing demand for mental health and substance use services, based on the available evidence on the nature of the issues and what works in various situations. The recommendations of this report will support the delivery of mental health and wellness services by the nation's institutions of higher education.
