Book excerpt: "Business schools in the United States are continuously working to provide students with real-world experiences which will help them discern, and prepare for, their future careers. As globalization continues to increase the interconnectedness of the world, and of the companies within it, it is increasingly important that business students are globally aware and culturally competent. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that studying abroad enables business students to discern and prepare for their future careers. To demonstrate this, students and graduates of Butler University's Lacy School of Business, with graduation years between 2012 and 2022, were surveyed. Those who previously studied abroad were part of the experimental group, and those who did not study abroad were part of the control group. It was found that business students who studied abroad are more likely to work internationally, more prepared for the workforce and more confident in their ability to obtain jobs, and more comfortable networking with colleagues in the business world than business students who did not study abroad. These findings emphasize the importance that business schools should be placing on their students' study abroad experiences"--Leaf 3.

Book excerpt: College is designed to prepare students for the workforce, yet students are studying abroad each year without significant research to demonstrate how study abroad impacts their future employment outlook. This study aimed to discover the ways in which college graduates’ experiences studying abroad shaped the way they thought about future employment in terms of social, environmental, or economical influence. Participants where alumni of Fairleigh Dickinson University and had studied abroad either short- or long-term during their undergraduate careers and were employed full-time at the time of the interview. Data from the interviews was evaluated and categorized in order to address the research question and to highlight commonalities in participant responses. The findings included three themes, two of which addressed the research question and one emerged from participant responses. The themes included future employment outlook, social, environmental, and/or economic influence, and skills learned. This study demonstrates additional benefits that studying abroad can provide students. Schools could use these findings to design study abroad programs that allow students to gain professional and personal skills that they can use to focus on their future employment opportunities. This study can be built upon by widening the participant sample and by measuring students’ skills and perceptions before and after participating in a study abroad program.

Book excerpt: This Capstone paper explores the logic that study abroad has long-term impact on participants0́9 professional development. It investigates the professional outcomes and benefits of studying abroad as perceived by Dickinson College class of 1998 study abroad alumni. Through use of a survey, phone interviews, and email follow-up, study abroad participants were questioned about the skills, knowledge, and self-awareness they acquired and maintained from their study abroad experience. Inquiries were made into how and if these acquisitions proved professionally applicable, influenced career paths, and contributed to success. Findings confirm that gains resulting from studying abroad are professionally applicable in the form of foreign language use, intercultural competences and personal growth. Evidence showed that a large majority of study abroad alumni gravitate toward a line of work with an international or multicultural dimension. The experience increased competitiveness as a job applicant and led to professional opportunities. The data further indicates that many alumni are influenced by their study abroad experience in choosing a career path. Download or read book Study Abroad in a New Global Century written by Susan B. Twombly and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying abroad has become a key educational means for preparing graduates with the intercultural competencies needed to succeed in our global economy. The federal government, business community, and higher education sector are united in their belief that study abroad is critical to such success. This monograph seeks to address two fundamental questions: Who studies abroad (or who does not) and why? What are the outcomes of study abroad? Increasing and broadening study abroad participation have proven particularly challenging, and the authors look to the research for how it might be improved. Although research suggests positive outcomes of study abroad, existing studies leave educators with some challenging questions. Based on their review, the authors pose recommendations for ways in which study abroad in the twenty-first century can renew its purposes and fulfill its promise.
Book Synopsis The First Time Effect by : Joshua S. McKeown
Download or read book The First Time Effect written by Joshua S. McKeown and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study abroad programs on American college and university campuses are booming, with a national goal of sending abroad one million students within ten years. In this timely and thought-provoking look at the benefits of studying abroad, Joshua S. McKeown moves beyond the acknowledged cultural and linguistic benefits to focus on how it promotes intellectual growth in participating students. He shows that for some students—particularly those without substantial prior international experience—study abroad is associated with significant gains in intellectual development. For those students who have traveled abroad previously, the same does not hold true. It is those students who lack meaningful international exposure who seem to benefit most from studying abroad. The First Time Effect describes in a straightforward way what is happening with today's study abroad students and holds broad implications for education policy and practice.
Book Synopsis Assessing Study Abroad by : Victor Savicki
Download or read book Assessing Study Abroad written by Victor Savicki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to guide advisors, administrators, and faculty members engaged with study abroad who are concerned with answering the question: what does study abroad achieve? It will also inform the work of study abroad organizations as well as institutions receiving study abroad students. Offering a broad-based approach to assessment, the book will appeal to those starting out. However, an array of case studies, illustrating the often untidy process of implementation, will equally appeal to those further along by offering creative – and often simple – approaches to common problems. Following an account of how, and why, assessment in the field has evolved, the first part of the book sets the stage for the reader to consider the role of mission and context in determining purpose, goals and outcomes; to identify and consult with stakeholders; determine what data and expertise may already be available on campus; match methods and tools to questions; and create realistic plans to communicate findings, and to act upon them. The second part of the book offers an overview of appropriate tools and strategies for assessing study abroad, emphasizing the importance of carefully formulating and prioritizing assessment questions and understanding the advantages and drawbacks of different instruments. It describes an array of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods, illustrating their application with examples of practice, and concludes by outlining the process of putting a plan into action. The book concludes with ten case studies that illustrate various approaches to planning, experimentation, and implementation, some revealing false starts and lessons learned, and all conveying the message that assessment is an iterative, on-going process that needs constant refinement. The cases represent a wide variety of institutional and organizational types and demonstrate how each selected methods suited to their capacities and cultures.
Book Synopsis Examining the Impact of Undergraduate Study Abroad on Early Career Outcomes: A Mixed Methods Approach by : Noah Goldblatt
Download or read book Examining the Impact of Undergraduate Study Abroad on Early Career Outcomes: A Mixed Methods Approach written by Noah Goldblatt and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines impact of study abroad on early career outcomes at a professionally-focused northeastern private college. A mixed-methods sequential research design provides a thorough inquiry into the influence of study abroad on early career outcomes at this institution. In the first, quantitative phase of the study, The National Organization of College and Employer's (NACE) First-Destination Survey data is analyzed to assess whether a study abroad experience has an impact on career outcomes. The quantitative results compare career outcomes for 2014, 2015, and 2016 graduates who have studied abroad (n = 523) and those who did not study abroad (n = 661). The quantitative survey contains 1184 participants and represents a response rate of approximately 90% of the total graduates at the college. The second qualitative phase examines the quantitative results in order to help explain and provide insights into the outcomes. A theoretical lens of appreciative inquiry is applied as a framework for interpreting the results and informs the qualitative line of questioning. In this project, studying abroad did not prove to significantly impact early career outcomes. Based on the NACE First Destination Survey, the higher education industry standard for capturing career placement information, graduates from this college got no quantifiable positive early career impact from studying abroad. In fact, some trends in the data even show an early negative effect from having studied abroad especially for female graduates. Further trends in the results contradict assumptions about study abroad that are held by students and international educators. However, meaningful impacts of studying abroad on graduate's vocational clarity along with personal and professional development are revealed in the qualitative phase of the study that simply cannot be captured in the NACE survey.
