Book excerpt: This thesis examines Soviet ethnic and national problems resulting from the gradual demographic shifts presently underway. It considers the impact of the shift from a Russian majority in a Russian dominated society, to the Russians becoming only one large minority group among many. The tensions that will increasingly strain the Soviet system as a result of the demographic changes and the complex problems with which the new Kremlin leadership must deal are discussed in relation to Soviet foreign policy. A major problem of the coming decades will be how the leadership attempts to resolve these changes. The nationality probelms of the Soviet Union may not intrinsically be momentous, but are curcial for their potentially exacerbating effects on Soviet foreign policy. (Author).

This book was released on 1991 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, five experts on the Soviet Union describe the disintegration of the Soviet empire, and its implications for American policy. It begins with a historical overview of the multinational character of Russia and the Soviet Union, with special attention to the similarities and differences between the present moment and the years immediately following the revolution of 1917. Other essays assess the strength of nationalism in the Soviet West--the Baltics, the Slavic republics of Belorussia, Ukraine, and Russia, and Moldova; and the Soviet South, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the five largely Muslim republics of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kirghizia). The volume concludes with a look at the issues that the upheaval in the 15 republics presents for U.S. foreign and security policy. ISBN 0-87609-100-1 (pbk.): $14.95.

Book Synopsis Identity and Politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus by : Mohammed Ayoob
Download or read book Identity and Politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus written by Mohammed Ayoob and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multicultural region of Central Eurasia is living through its early post-independence years and as such serves as an ideal case to study and analyse theories of identity and foreign policy in a non-European context. Looking to re-introduce identity as a multidimensional factor informing state behaviour, this book analyses the experiences of the different Central Eurasian states in their post-independence pursuits. The book is structured into two broadly defined sections, with the first half examining the different ways in which the combination of domestic, regional, international and trans-national forces worked to advance one national identity over the others in the states that comprise the region of post-Soviet Central Eurasia. In the second half, chapters analyse the many ways in which identity, once shaped, affected foreign policy behaviours of the regional states, as well as the overall security dynamics in the region. The book also looks at the ways in which identity, by doing so, enjoys an intricate, mutually constitutive relationship with the strategic context in which it bears its effects on the state and the region. Finally, given the special role Russia has historically played in defining the evolutionary trajectory of the regional states, the book discusses the ways in which Russia itself and its post-cold war policies towards its former colonies have been conditioned by factors associated with Russia’s evolving post-Soviet identity. Placing the region firmly within existing theories of identity and state practices, the book will be of interest to students and scholars of Central Asian Politics, Security Studies, Foreign Policy and International Relations.

Book Synopsis Ethnic Identity Groups and U.S. Foreign Policy by : Thomas Ambrosio
Download or read book Ethnic Identity Groups and U.S. Foreign Policy written by Thomas Ambrosio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic identity groups-defined broadly to include ethnic, religious, linguistic, or racial identities-have long played a role in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy. Yet ethnic group influence increased significantly following the Cold War. Ambrosio and his colleagues provide a unique collection of essays on the relationship between ethnic identity groups and U.S. foreign policy. The book covers a wide range of issues, historical periods, and geographic regions. Integrated chapters examine four major issues: the traditional (white) role of ethnicity in U.S. foreign policy; ethnic identity group mobilization; newcomers to the foreign policy process; and the complexities of ethnic identity politics. An in-depth literature review is provided, as well as an overview of the moral/ethical issues surrounding ethnic group influence on U.S. foreign policy, especially after the events of September 11, 2001. This volume is designed to spark debate on the theoretical, historical, and ethical issues of ethnic identity group influence on U.S. foreign policy. As such, it will be of special interest to scholars, students, researchers, policymakers, and anyone concerned with the making of American foreign policy.
