Book Synopsis The Dark Side of Families by : David Finkelhor
Download or read book The Dark Side of Families written by David Finkelhor and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1983-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of articles portrays the state of the art on family violence and abuse research, crystallizes the key interdisciplinary issues confronting family violence and abuse researchers, and suggests a research agenda for the coming years. Although the chapters cover a broad spectrum of issues and controversies in the areas of wife abuse, child abuse, the sexual abuse of children, and marital rape, a number of common themes and issues emerge. First, many chapters share the perspective that violence and abuse emerge from the nature of social arrangements. Second, even though many different forms of family violence and abuse are discussed, several chapters explore their commonalities and important etiological differences. A number of articles examine the common effects of victimization across various forms of family violence and abuse. A third common theme of the papers is an expansion of research efforts to groups other than victims of family violence and abuse, as there are chapters that examine the individual and social characteristics of male perpetrators of both wife abuse and child abuse as well as chapters that focus on the attitudes and behaviors of professional groups concerned with the treatment of victims of family violence and abuse. The volume shows great methodological diversity and attention to theoretical detail; the research presented reveals the possibility of a more comprehensive social science approach to the study of family violence and abuse. In work related to theory building, one chapter explains a number of findings in the child abuse and neglect literature using propositions derived from evolutionary biology; another paper distills propositions from several theoretical traditions. In conjunction with these efforts, several chapters report research designed to test competing propositions. Chapter references and research data are provided.

Book Synopsis Predictors of College Students' Dating Violence Perceptions and Help-seeking Recommendations by : Kathleen M. Hutchinson
Download or read book Predictors of College Students' Dating Violence Perceptions and Help-seeking Recommendations written by Kathleen M. Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical and psychological aggression in dating relationships is prevalent among college students (e.g., Kaura & Lohman, 2007; Shook, Gerrity, Jurich, & Segrist, 2000; Straus, 2008), and students experiencing dating IPV are most likely to speak to friends (Prospero & Vohra-Gupta, 2008). The current study investigated differences in perceptions of heterosexual dating IPV and help-seeking recommendations for a friend as a function of scenario type (e.g., male perpetrator/female victim and female perpetrator/male victim) and participant sex. The study also examined gender role attitudes and attitudes toward dating violence that have been associated with perceptions of dating IPV (e.g., Berkel et al., 2004; Coleman & Stith, 1997; Hillier & Foddy, 1993; Hilton, Harris, & Rice, 2003; Willis, Hallinan, & Melby, 1996). A college sample (N=200) read a dating IPV scenario depicting either male-to-female or female-to-male dating IPV. A series of 2x2 ANCOVAs, controlling for previous exposure to IPV and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, showed that women were more likely than men to hold more egalitarian gender role attitudes, be less accepting of dating violence, perceive the behaviors in the dating scenario as more serious, and be more likely to recommend that a friend seek help at the counseling center. Participants were more likely to recommend the counseling center for female victims than male victims. Path analysis results provided initial support for a theoretical model of counseling center help-seeking recommendations.
Book Synopsis Racial Socialization and Perceived Social Support as Predictors of Resiliency in African Americans by : Danice L. Brown
Download or read book Racial Socialization and Perceived Social Support as Predictors of Resiliency in African Americans written by Danice L. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, researchers have begun to ponder what has helped many African American adolescents and adults to become resilient despite their circumstances. The present study examined two aspects of the lives of African Americans that may serve as protective factors, allowing some of them to successfully struggle through the situations they have been dealt. It was hypothesized that social support and racial socialization would be related to resiliency in African Americans. Many researchers have noted the buffering effects of social support and racial socialization in the lives of African Americans. Measures of resiliency (CD-RISC), social support (MPSS), and racial socialization (TERS) were administered to 108 female and 45 male African American undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university. ANOVAs revealed gender effects on the measures of social support. Females scored higher on the three subscales (family, friend, and special person). Regression analyses were utilized to find the predictive value of social support and racial socialization for resiliency. Predictive value was found (R2=.09) for these two constructs in predicting resiliency. Additionally, psychometric data were gathered for an instrument designed to measure resiliency in African Americans. These results are discussed in detail herein.
