Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine if Microteaching Lesson Study supports teachers in improving their art of teaching by creating a collaborative environment where choice and refinement of instructional strategy choices increase student learning. It also determines how teachers perceive whether student learning outcomes were influenced by their use of MLS. The results of this study could provide insight into the use of MLS as a topic for professional development offered within school districts. This dissertation consisted of a qualitative case study in which data was collected and analyzed from four middle school teachers participating in one full cycle of MLS as well as pre and post interviews about their experience. The MLS cycle consisted of an initial lesson planning session, teaching/recording of the lesson, a reflection/planning meeting, teaching/recording of the lesson, and a post reflection session. All four educators also participated in a MLS professional development session led by the researcher prior to the MLS cycle. All data collected from both interviews and the MLS cycle was coded in order to analyze the data. Codes included overall microteaching lesson study experience, instructional strategy knowledge, reflection, student learning outcomes and collegial interactions/ collaboration. The findings of this case study suggest that Microteaching Lesson Study is a beneficial form of professional development that, when used appropriately in the classroom setting, can impact teachers’ choices of instructional strategies being implemented into lessons, and can increase teacher knowledge of effective instructional strategies, thus increasing student engagement and knowledge gained. This case study provided data on Microteaching Lesson Study in an environment where students were learning in a hybrid model of both in-person and virtual instruction, and where the researcher was an administrator. The researcher believes that the next logical steps for future study should include a multi-year study on how MLS impacts instructional strategies implemented in face-to-face classrooms, as well as an exploration of how these strategies impact student engagement and student learning outcomes.

Book excerpt: Despite wave after wave of educational reform in the United States our students continue to lag behind their peers in other industrialized countries on virtually all measures of academic achievement. Effective professional development (pd) is seen as a key to improving instructional practice and therefore student learning, but traditional forms of pd have been wholly unsuccessful in changing teaching practice. Over the last two decades an emerging body of research has identified some key features of effective pd that seem to create meaningful change and improvement in instructional practice. Some of this research highlights the promise of adapting Japanese lesson study (ls) to the American context as a means of incrementally improving instruction. Much of the existing research around ls is descriptive in nature and offers little insight into if and how participation in ls impacts subsequent instructional practice. This study utilized case study methodology to examine the instructional practice of one group of four middle school science teachers before, during, and after participation in ls. The study attempted to identify specific learning outcomes of a ls process, to identify influences on teacher learning during ls, and to identify subsequent changes in the instructional practice of participants resulting from participation in ls. Key findings from the study include significant teacher learning derived from the ls process, the identification of influences that enhanced or inhibited teacher learning, and clear evidence that participants successfully integrated learning from the ls into subsequent instructional practice. Learning outcomes included deepening of subject matter knowledge, increased understanding of student thinking and abilities, clarity of expectations for student performance, recognition of the ineffectiveness of past instructional practice, specific instructional strategies, shared student learning goals, and an increased commitment to future development of student learning. Influences supporting teacher learning were trust and honest dialogue among participants, focused collaboration, examination of student work, and the opportunity to watch other teachers deliver instruction. Influences inhibiting teacher learning related to failure to adhere to key features of the ls protocol. The study offers initial evidence confirming the promise of ls as a model of effective pd. Specifically, the study explored the relationship of class size to student behavior and classroom management, as well as the availability of individualized instruction. The study also explored the effect of professional development on the teachers' ability to meet student needs relative to class size. The participants included regular education teachers, special area teachers, and specialists, who provided specialized instruction such as special education, reading support, and guidance counseling in two southeastern Pennsylvania elementary schools. This study found that teachers perceived increased student engagement when class size remained small. Teachers reported that smaller classes allowed them to provide quality feedback to students and identify their academic and social strengths and needs. Teachers reported that class size had a direct impact on instructional delivery methods, types of assignments, and measures of student progress. In addition, despite the number of years of experience or the amount of graduate course work completed, teachers reported a desire for increased professional development relative to larger classes. Specifically, teachers requested support with effective classroom management strategies and techniques to facilitate small group instruction while other students are engaged in independent learning activities. Overall, the results of the study suggested that teachers perceived teaching and learning to be less effective when the number of students increased beyond 22 students in a classroom.

It is critical that teachers are able to filter and meaningfully interpret the relevant information in this complex scenario. Much of this filtering and interpretation occurs through selective visual perception. Over the last decade, a rapidly growing number of studies in empirical educational research used eye tracking to investigate teachers' selective visual perceptual processes in the classroom. Theoretically, visual attention and perception are often conceptualized as knowledge-based noticing coupled with knowledge-based reasoning about what is visually perceived. Recent eye-tracking studies have shown that experienced teachers, in particular, show improved selective attention of classroom events through faster detection of relevant information and improved monitoring of learning-relevant situations. Researchers agree that a critical driver of selective attention processes is the professional knowledge (declarative, procedural, and metacognitive) of (experienced) teachers, which controls selective perceptual processes in a top-down process. The findings are significant and provide important insights for research on teacher professionalization.
