Book excerpt: Over the past few years the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women's basketball tournament has drawn larger crowds, generated increased television ratings, and attracted higher levels of advertising spending. Division I women's basketball is now viewed as the women's "revenue" sport. In light of the limited analysis of the organizational conditions that frame college-sport broadcast production, this case study examines the impact of influential actors on the representation process of big-time college-basketball telecasts. Using a mixed-method approach, this article investigates production conditions and processes involved in producing women's basketball tournament broadcasts, examines the extent to which these broadcasts are consistent with the NCAA's educational mission, and considers the dominant institutional logic that underpins their reproduction. In so doing, this case study provides a critical examination of women's basketball tournament broadcasts and how such broadcasts constitute, and are constituted by, choices in television production structures and practices.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the three point field goal on women's collegiate basketball. This study compared the average number of three point field goal attempts per game and average three point field goal shooting percentage per game to winning percentage in close and non-close games. Women's collegiate basketball teams representing the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Big Sky and Southeastern Conferences and the NCAA Division II North Central Conference were the subjects of this study. Data were collected during the 1990-91 basketball season. Statistical data indicated a significant correlation between the average three point field goal shooting percentage per game and winning percentage in all games combined. There was also a significant correlation between the average three point field goal shooting percentage per game and winning percentage in non-close games. A questionnaire surveying the opinions of the coaches of each institution involved in this research regarding the three point field goal was developed, distributed, and analyzed. Survey findings indicated coaches believe the current three point field goal rule should remain. The coaches surveyed suggested the three point field goal rule has changed the style of play by creating more competitive and exciting games, increased the ability for the team behind to "catch up" and win games, and increased the use of player-to-player defenses. Additionally, coaches consider rebounding strategies effected by the addition of the three point field goal. Coaches do not feel the three point field goal has helped eliminate rough low post play. Coaches were undecided whether the three point field goal has helped off-set the advantage of the big player, or changed fast break strategies . Coaches were also undecided on a suitable percentage that would be justifiable in attempting three point field goals compared to two point field goals. This research concludes the three point field goal rule in women's collegiate basketball has a positive influence on the game and the present three point field goal rule with the line remaining at 19'9" is favored by women's basketball coaches at both NCAA Divisions I and II. The statistical research indicates that three point field goal percentage may be an important consideration in a team's win/loss record. Future researchers may wish to investigate the effect of the three point field goal on fast break opportunities and rebounding strategies, or conduct a replication study to examine different levels of play"--Document.

Book excerpt: Women s basketball is arguably the most popular women s college sport in the United States. Since the inception of the game, the sport has grown in ways the pioneers could have never imagined. Now, with the emergence of powerhouses like the University of Connecticut, the University of Tennessee and the University of Maryland, women s basketball has come into the limelight. One of the strongest Division I conferences is the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which includes top twenty-five teams such as Maryland, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. How does one market such talent? What are the most effective methods for filling the stands and making an impression that will keep spectators coming back for more? This study examined the history of women s basketball and how the past has influenced the ways people market and promote the sport, specifically the marketing and promotional techniques used by the ACC for the 2009 women s basketball tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina.

As founder and CEO of Host Communications, he was the pioneer in college sports marketing. Host's prevailing innovation in collegiate sports was the concept of bundled licensing, which encouraged corporate partners to become official sponsors of athletic programs across media formats. Host and his team developed the NCAA Radio Network and introduced what became known as the NCAA Corporate Partner Program, employing companies such as Gillette, Valvoline, Coca-Cola, and Pizza Hut to promote university athletic programs and the NCAA at large. Host was involved with the construction of Rupp Arena, the Kentucky Horse Park, and the KFC Yum! Center. But few know his full story. Changing the Game is the first complete account of Host's professional life, detailing his achievements in sports radio, management, and broadcasting; his time in minor league baseball, real estate, and the insurance business; and his foray into Kentucky politics, including his appointments under governors Louie B. Nunn and Ernie Fletcher. This memoir provides a behind-the-scenes look at the growth of big-time athletics and offers solutions for current challenges facing college sports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1994 classic work on student retention, Vincent Tinto synthesizes far-ranging research on student attrition and on actions institutions can and should take to reduce it. The key to effective retention, Tinto demonstrates, is in a strong commitment to quality education and the building of a strong sense of inclusive educational and social community on campus. He applies his theory of student departure to the experiences of minority, adult, and graduate students, and to the situation facing commuting institutions and two-year colleges. Especially critical to Tinto’s model is the central importance of the classroom experience and the role of multiple college communities.
