However, there is limited knowledge on women who seek help from police stations because many studies have used samples of women residing in domestic violence shelters and medical clinics. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand self-reported mental health symptoms among women seeking help from a police station. Evidence shows that there are many variables that affect the link between IPV and mental health. This dissertation specifically explores the impact of demographic risk factors, type and number of IPV incidents, victim referral needs, and protective factors (social support, coping strategies, and economic resources) on self-reported mental health symptoms. Data from case records of women victims of IPV seeking help from a city police station located in the southwest, United States, were examined to identify: (1) the type and incidents of IPV, (2) demographic risk factors of age, ethnicity, marital status, and financial dependence, (3) protective factors of social support, coping strategies, economic resources, and (4) self-reported mental health symptoms. The sample consisted of 154 women majority (42.9%) of whom were aged between 31-40 years. Nearly half of the women were married (51.9%), about 45.5% were Whites, 28.6% Black/African Americans, 18.8% Hispanic/Latino and 7.1% were categorized as others. More than half of the women experienced physical violence (70.1%); 9.1% experienced sexual violence; 14.9% experienced emotional/stalking violence and 5.8% experienced combined violence. Approximately 67.5% of the women reported some mental health symptoms. Bivariate analyses showed that there were significant differences in mental health symptoms based on protective factors of social support, coping strategies, and economic resources. Contrary to the expectations of this dissertation, those who had more resources significantly reported more mental health symptoms. In addition, those who had more resources reported fewer IPV incidents but these differences were not significant. Overall, victim referral needs, social support, coping strategies, and economic resources were all positively correlated with mental health symptoms. Further, social support was found to postively predict mental health symptoms among women. Coping strategies fully mediated the relationship between the interaction variable of IPV and victim referral needs, and mental health symptoms. Social support and economic resources did not mediate this relationship. Results from this dissertation indicate that development of individuals' protective resources may help protect women from repeated IPV and improve their mental health and well-being. Specifically, coping strategies may reduce the negative impact of IPV on women's mental health. In discussing prevention and intervention efforts with women who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing IPV, social work practitioners need to emphasize the important role of coping resources as a protective factor mental health symptoms.

Book excerpt: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are the two most commonly observed mental health outcomes in populations of women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) (Golding, 1999). Successful help-seeking is a major predictor in successful coping with the stress and trauma of being abused, thus reducing negative mental health consequences of IPV. Calling police is one of the ways that women may seek help when they have an abusive partner. However, IPV is under-reported in Canada, and women often view calling the police as a last resort (Hare, 2006; Jordan, 2004). The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the possibility that contact with police, and certain types of police intervention, may act as predictors of psychological well-being of victims of IPV. Three hypotheses were tested by analyzing questionnaire data from a community sample of 185 women. Data were collected through the Healing Journey Project, which is a longitudinal study of women who have experienced IPV. The first hypothesis was that female victims will access police assistance less often than other services in response to IPV. The second hypothesis was that the nature and frequency of police contact will predict rates of PTSD symptoms, above and beyond abuse severity and other risk factors for PTSD. The third hypothesis was that the nature and frequency of police contact will predict rates of depression symptoms, above and beyond abuse severity and other risk factors for depression. Overall, the data did not support these three hypotheses. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed, and placed within the context of existing literature. Future directions are also discussed.

Traditional beliefs and gender stereotypes underlying police attitudes associated with domestic violence are explored. The authors provide considerations for domestic violence prevention and intervention programs, highlighting the importance of adopting proactive and supportive attitudes in response to victims. Researchers have measured intimate partner violence and survivors' help-seeking through a variety of different instruments, making it difficult to paint a consistent picture of intimate partner violence. As such, this collection includes the results of a study comparing three measures so as to examine whether a certain measure produces a discernible pattern of results. A subsequent study analyses the relationship between psychopathological symptomatology and intimate partner violence in a sample of 122 Portuguese women participants, 61 with a judiciary victim status and 61 without this status. To avoid discrepancies between medical reporting and the reconstruction of sex crimes, it is crucial to use strategies which focus not only on technical aspects of evidence collection, but also on the way the victim's story will be recorded. Women most commonly experience violence victimisation by someone close to them. Therapeutic work with victims/survivors of intimate partner violence may range from immediate crisis intervention to long-term support. The award-winning PAWS FOR EMPOWERMENT program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is discussed, as well as the successes and challenges the program has faced in rescuing and training shelter dogs to serve as canine advocates. A qualitative study is presented which aims to further our understanding of how domestic violence between intimate partners can affect maternal parenting. The sample used comprised 15 mothers and victims of domestic violence, focusing on understanding how they conceive of their role as a parent. The authors go on to explore the extent to which domestic violence is regulated in Indonesia, and the extent to which such regulation is implemented. This compilation also examines how the practice of forced marriage arrangements creates vulnerabilities for girls and young women. Accordingly, a discussion is provided concerning differences and similarities between the concepts of arranged and forced marriage, and its relationship to sexual trafficking. The authors summarize findings on the association between cyber dating abuse and offline dating violence in a sample of 145 Portuguese adolescents and young adults. Additionally, a review of the literature on the phenomenon of multiple child and youth victimization is carried out, addressing the main risk factors, the implications for the development of children and young people, and guidelines for intervention. The impact that community violence exposure has on youth is assessed, accompanied with practical proposals for prevention. The concept of community violence and the different types of violence and crimes that could be involved are examined, mapping the prevalence of youth affected by this type of violence. Accordingly, to develop appropriate helpful responses to victims of violence and crime, it is particularly relevant to assess people's perceptions, to be aware of their victimization experiences and to identify their needs. In closing, using Saint Lucia as an example, some of the challenges of supporting victims of intimate violence on an island are illustrated, discussing innovative policies and practices to best support victims in this context.

Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of officers with colleagues who perpetrate acts of domestic violence. This was a qualitative research design from a phenomenological perspective. The data was gathered by the use of face-to-face interviews using open-ended questions. The data was analyzed by the use of bracketing, horizonalization, clusters of meanings, textural and structural descriptions, and the invariant structure of the phenomena described by the study participants. Upon completion of the 30 interviews, the audio tapes were all transcribed, and loaded in to Atlas Ti for the purpose of coding the data for the major themes. A constant comparison method was used to analyze the data to help identify the similarities and differences between the study participants' perceptions with the phenomena. The five qualitative questions each depict a different area of experience with the phenomenon, to create a holistic picture of the perceptions of the thirty participants. The findings suggest that for some officers, the inability to separate their police role from their civilian role may be a factor in the perpetration of domestic violence by law enforcement officers. The findings also suggest that social workers may be able to play an important role in the remediation of the problem of domestic violence for those within and outside police social work settings.

Book excerpt: The experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a type of trauma that can greatly affect health and social functioning. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are the two most common mental health problems that develop following IPV. IPV is also commonly associated with negative self-based emotions (shame and guilt) and lower levels of perceived social support. Few empirical studies have examined the unique impact that negative self-based emotions have on the maintenance of PTSD and depression, and the role that social support may have on these associations following IPV. This report will address the gaps in the current research and examine how social support may intervene in the association between negative self-based emotional states and mental health functioning. The present study included 152 help-seeking female IPV survivors. Results indicated that shame and guilt were significantly associated with both PTSD and depression. As well, shame and guilt were negatively associated with social support. There was a significant indirect associated noted between shame and guilt via social support such that higher perceptions of social support were associated with lower levels of shame and depression. No other significant indirect associations emerged. These results suggest that negative self-based emotions may contribute to mental health problems after IPV. Future interventions for IPV survivors should make an effort to address negative self-based emotions for women experiencing symptoms of both depression and PTSD. Additionally, interventions geared at increasing perceptions of social support may also help in alleviating post-trauma depression. Results are discussed in light of these findings. .
